Henry: Writing a story Wow, that sounds interesting. Do you want to be a novelist in the future Maggie: It’s not as easy as it appears. I can’t even get to start. My teacher required me to hand in the story tomorrow. Do you have some advice for me Henry: Don’t worry, I have done that before. Writing a short story is not difficult as you think. Just follow some rules, and you will get it right. Maggie: Really I am not kidding. Henry: Trust me.Six elements of a story Henry: Maggie, have you heard six elements of a narrative Maggie: Nope, what are they Henry: The six elements are when, where, who, what, why, and how. Maggie: That sounds easy. Henry: Exactly. If you could put forward the six elements, you would make a story. Have a try. Take the four pictures on page thirty for example. Could you think of the answers to the questions Maggie: Let me try. Henry: Question 1. Who were the people in the story Maggie: Um, A British family and the girl. Henry: Question 2. Where did the story take place Maggie: In a British restaurant, I think. Henry: Question 3. What happened Maggie: The girl seemed shocked by the proposal that we have toad-in-the-hole for dinner. Henry: Question 4. What caused the misunderstanding Maggie: It is the girl who doesn’t understand the meaning of British slang. Henry: Not bad, you’ve made big progress! you told the whole thing. That is considered to be narration. However, I am afraid it’s not a story. Maggie: I agree. How could I build up a story, Henry The structure of a story (6 steps of a story) Henry: Take it easy. We need to do it step by step. You know, a story consists of different scenes. Maggie: Just like a movie Henry: Absolutely. The first scene of a story is usually called the setting. That means when, where, and who should be presented in front of your audience. They are supposed to be attracted by the setting at the very beginning so they keep reading the story. Picture A, for example, is served as the setting. You could write a sentence as last summer, I stayed with a British host family. Maggie: And then Henry: Then, a problem is expected to happen. Your protagonist will meet trouble, which is aimed to show his or her ability to deal with difficulties. Maggie: Yes, that is the case. Henry: Have you noticed something wrong happened in picture B Maggie: Let me see. The son of the family told the girl that they would have toad in the hole for dinner, and the girl was really surprised. Henry: Good. After that, the third step of a story is to present the responses of the main characters in the story. Maggie: Wait a moment. I don’t quite understand that. Henry: That means you need to show how the characters react to the problem. Their reactions reflect their different personalities. Based on picture C, you may write like this, I wasn’t sure whether we were going to eat a real toad in a hole. If so, how terrible! Maggie: That makes sense. How about the fourth step Henry: The fourth step, solution, is the most important part of a story. Your character should try his best to solve the problem, which would make the character charming to the audience. In picture D, the girl chose to join the family at dinner time and she found the dish tasted delicious. After that, you come to the fifth step, the result. The truth is that toad in the hole is a typical dish for a British dinner, and there is no toad. But remember the result doesn’t mean the end of the story. Before the end, what the main character does should be evaluated. That is, the value of the story should be presented to your audience. The experience of the story may be amazing for the girl and she may find it interesting to try such yummy food with a strange name.Ending Maggie: Oh, that sounds great. Thank you for your suggestion. Henry: Not at all, Maggie, but remember, saying is easier than doing. Practice makes perfect. Maggie: Come on, Henry. There you go again. Henry: That’s all for today. Maggie, I hope you will write a great story one day. Maggie: I will try my best, Henry. Thank you for your suggestions.Homework外研社英语新教材必修一第31页:Write a paragraph to tell the story. One day, I was really surprised when Jeremy, the son of the family, told me that we would have toad-in-the-hole for dinner. I wasn’t sure whether we were going to eat a real toad in a hole. If so, how terrible! I joined them at dinner time with butterflies in my stomach. To my astonishment, a dish of sausage cooked in Yorkshire pudding ( a mix that tastes a bit like pancakes) was served on the table, and it tasted delicious. It turned out that toad-in-the-hole is a typical dish for a British dinner, and there’s no toad! What an amazing experience! It was interesting to try such yummy food with a strange name. 展开更多...... 收起↑ 资源预览
