Warming-up Guide students to think about two questions: what is attributive what is clause 1分30秒
Presentation: The first question is: what is attributive Simply, 定语就是限定修饰, a cute dog一只可爱的小狗,可爱的;a dog that can fly一只会飞的小狗,会飞的;本质上也是形容词,即adj. The second question is: what is clause The woman who lives next door is a doctor . A clause is a part of a sentence(有完整的句子结构). A relative clause tells us which person or thing (or what kind of person or thing) the speaker means: The woman who lives next door . . . (who lives next door tells us which woman) People who live in the country . . . ('who live in the country' tells us what kind of people) We use who in a relative clause when we are talking about people (not things): the woman- she lives next door- is a doctor. The woman who lives next door is a doctor. we know a lot of people - they live in the country We know a lot of people who live in the country. An architect is someone who designs buildings. Anyone who wants to apply for the job must do so by Friday. What was the name of the person who phoned You can also use that (instead of who), but you can 't use which for people: The woman that lives next door is a doctor. (not the woman which) When we are talking about things, we use that or which (not who) in a relative clause: I don't like stories that have unhappy endings. (or stories which have ... ) Grace works for a company that makes furniture. (or a company which makes furniture) The machine that broke down is working again now. (or The machine which broke down) 总而言之,定语从句就是形容词性的从句,但出于英语的表达习惯,当定语太长时,我们常常会将其后置于被修饰名词的后边,称为后置定语。So, how to write relative clause is the most important part of our class. Look at this picture., I know that man. The man is doing Tai Chi. We can also make one sentence from two using who, that, which. So, the sentence becomes: I know that man who is doing Tai Chi. But how can we write a sentence like this Here are the three steps. Step 1: To find the shared noun or pronoun; Step 2: To choose an appropriate relative pronoun: decide if it tells us which person or thing (or what kind of person or thing), that man is a person, so we use who to replace it. Step 3: Make the two sentences one (pay attention to the relative pronoun, usually after the noun expression). Then our sentence is complete. I know that man who is doing Tai Chi. And in addition, we should know that when we use who instead of “that man”, it is the subject in clause. 4分
Practice: Now, let’s do some exercises: Make one sentence from two . Use who/that/which. 1 A girl was injured in the accident. She is now in hospital. ______________________________________________ 2 A waitress served us. She was impolite and impatient . ______________________________________________ 3 A building was destroyed in the fire. It has now been rebuilt . ______________________________________________ 4 Some people were arrested. They have now been released. ______________________________________________ 5 A bus goes to the airport. It runs every half hour . ______________________________________________ Those want to see the film please write down your names here.
