Step 1 Lead-in ① Enjoy the video The Gift of the Magi and tell what virtues are displayed. Love and sacrifice ② Ask students a question: What other moral virtue do we have in our daily life Probable answers: Sincerity/thoughtfulness/kindness/sense of responsibility/honesty/justice/courage ③ Have students interpret the quote: To live a life of honesty and integrity is a responsibility of every decent person. —Noam Chomsky 过诚实、正直的生活是每一个正派人的责任。 ——诺姆·乔姆斯基 Possible answer: In my opinion, the quote means that a decent person should be honest and have integrity. This can be seen as his or her responsibility. Step 2 Welcome to the unit Have students discuss the following two questions: What are honest and responsible acts What do you think is the relationship between honesty and responsibility according to the descriptions They are inevitably connected to one another. Take agreements seriously Keep promises Admit mistakes Show your trustworthiness All these actions demonstrate the relationship between acting honestly and responsibly. Step 3 Pre-reading About the author O. Henry (1862–1910) was an American short story author whose real name was William Sydney Porter. Henry’s works reflected his wide-range of experiences and is distinctive for its witticism(妙语), clever wordplay, and unexpected twist endings. O. Henry–—Surprising and profound endings In these endings, there will be a sudden twist (change) that results in an unexpected change of the characters’ inner world, experience, destiny, etc, thus creating an unexpected yet understandable result. Such endings will make the story more appealing and dramatic, as well as more memorable for its readers. Background information: After Twenty Years is set in the early 1900s, near the end of America’s Westward Expansion (美国西进运动), which started in the early 1800s. During the expansion, many Americans went to the West (美国西部) to make money. New York City is located in the north-east of the US and was already a big city by then. Step 4 While-reading Prediction What may the story be about What may happen after twenty years Skim the story and complete the plot diagram. Scan the story and answer the questions. (1) Why did Bob stand in the doorway of a store to wait for his friend The store used to be “Big Joe” Brady’s restaurant, where the two men had agreed to meet. (2) Why had Bob left New York twenty years before Bob had wanted to head for the West to make his fortune. (3) What time did the man in the long overcoat meet Bob Around 10:20 p.m. (4) How did Bob realize that the man in the long overcoat was not Jimmy Bob realized this when he saw the man’s face in the bright light of the drugstore. (5) When did Jimmy know Bob was the criminal wanted in Chicago When Bob struck the match to light his cigar. Finish the chart, and conclude the characterization of Jimmy and Bob. Read the note from the ending: “Bob: I was at the appointed place on time. When you struck the match to light your cigar I saw it was the face of the criminal wanted in Chicago. Anyhow I couldn't arrest you myself, so I got a plain-clothes man to do the job. JIMMY.” Why couldn’t Jimmy arrest Bob himself Jimmy had mixed feelings. He knew what his duty was. But the memories of their friendship, the expressions of Bob’s respect and admiration for him and the fact that Bob had come all the way keep the appointment they made 20 years ago must have deeply touched him. Loyalty to friend Devotion to duty Step 5 Post reading What do you think is the message of this short story Jimmy Wells is a loyal friend who you can trust and keeps his promises. At the same time he is a responsible policeman who will insist on his principles and never fail in his duty. This story sends a message that a person’s responsibility to society should be stronger than a friendship. Supposing the story did not end here, what would happen next Please act it out with your partner. Suggested characters: Jimmy, Bob, a plain-clothes police, …… Step 6 Homework Finish B1 on P5. Surf the Internet and learn more about O. Henry and his short stories.
