I. Learning objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. understand the organization of the magazine article;
2. analyze the causes of parent-child tensions;
3. build a positive attitude towards the relationship with their parents.

1. Improve students’ abilities to analyze problems.
2. Arouse students’ gratitude and motivation to develop the relationship with their parents.

How to connect students’ own experiences to the reading and have them express themselves.
IV. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Appreciation
Show students a Chinese poem in English and have them read the poem and answer:
What is the name of the poem
What feelings can you find in the poem
Step 2 Prediction before reading
lead Ss to focus on the title and pictures of the magazine article and
think about the following questions:
How do you understand the title
What aspects will be talked about in the following paragraphs
Step 3 Reading for organization
Ask ss to read the article and complete the outline of the article in A1 on page 18.
Lead them to analyze the structure of an argumentative essay.
Step 4 In-depth reading
Have ss to focus on paragraph1 and ask them how the author introduces the topic. Why
Ask Ss to focus on paragraph 2 and answer the following questions:
What physical changes might teenagers worry about
Can you use one word or phrase to conclude teenagers’ worry
3. Ask Ss to focus on paragraph 3 and answer the following questions:
What does “middle ground” refer to
Do you know a special term for that period
What do teenagers need in this period
What inner conflicts may teenagers have
4. Ask ss to focus on paragraph 4 and have them conclude the 4 steps of communication.
Take a minute to __________________.

5. Ask ss to focus on paragraph 5 and answer the following questions:
What’s is the author’s attitude to parent-child tensions
Could you find some information in the magazine article to support your idea
Step 5 Critical reading
Invite ss to watch a short video called what if everyone were your mother and discuss:
How will you feel/ react if a stranger cares about your safety and health
How will you feel/ react if a stranger disagrees with your opinions
Will you feel the same way to your parents Why
Why should we try to improve the relationship
V. Homework
Finish the reading exercise on page 65.
Write a short composition to describe the relationship between your parents and you.
