Not all classrooms are in school buildings. As we have learned, classrooms can be created almost anywhere that teachers and learners are able to connect, in person or virtually.
For Danielle Zelin, who teaches on the island of Mauritius, the classroom is in her home, and all around it. Danielle runs her own school the Language Mood English Club and as a result as freedom to take the curriculum(课程)in many directions, and sometimes that means looking right outside. Danielle’s school started as a club on Saturday mornings, with a focus on storytelling, but she now teaches classes to individuals and groups, mainly in the afternoons and evenings after school.
“I always know I want to teach,” she said, but it wasn’t always clear that English would be her area of expertise(专业知识). As a teenager growing up in Mauritius, she struggled to see the point of reading Shakespeare in her English classes. “That English is old,” she told her mother; “I will not use it in my daily life.” At the time, she much preferred reading French literature.
Years later, though, Danielle saw a performance of The Merchant of Venice, which she had studied in secondary school, and its power became clear to her. She didn’t have to memorize lines, answer questions, or analyze for a test; she just enjoyed the play and the performance.
In a sense, that is the spirit that she carries into her current teaching. Her students arrive after a day of school, often tired, “So my place is more like a fun place to do like an English Adventure - I like to call it that. We do so many different things together,” she said. She and the students sometimes brainstorm things they want to study or discuss, and often her students tell her, “We want to connect to the world.” As a result, they frequently study current events and local issues.

Almost everyone who has studied English has been warned about the way Brits love their manners. It is part of our national identity, as much as fish and chips or complaining about the weather. Recently I have been wondering where this comes from and I read online that we say sorry up to eight times a day. Probably the same amount of times that any other person says “hello” or “how are you”. It is almost like greetings to us! It was only when I was explaining how there are five steps of saying thank you when you buy something from a shop to a Mexican friend of mine that I realised how mad it sounded.
After some research online I have not been able to find any specific reasons why we are the way we are. I suppose for centuries manners and how we eat at the table and talk to other people have been the barriers between the lower and upper classes and represent your social status. Britain has traditionally been a quite conservative country. There are many articles suggesting that this seemingly polite attitude of always saying please and thank you is quite false because it is impossible to always feel that you want to thank someone or say please.
Maybe it is for this reason that people are going one of two ways: they are incredibly polite and hold back on their feelings or not polite at all, and express their true feelings. Some Brits are fed up of pretending that they are always content and having to please people. Sometimes because we feel we have to be polite, we are prevented from saying what we truly think. Do you think it is better to not hurt people’s feelings and be polite or to let people know the truth In your country what is the custom I know in some countries if someone is considered to be doing their job, the clients think that they do not need to be thanked.
18.What does the author think of the British way of saying “Thank you”
A.Normal. B.Surprising. C.Exciting. D.Pleasing.
19.What does the author want to find out
A.Why the British like to complain about the weather.
B.Why the British love their way of showing manners.
C.Why the British are fond of fish and chips so much.
D.Why the British have five steps of saying thank you.
20.What does the author think manners stand for centuries
A.Wealth and health. B.Social status. C.Politeness. D.Attitudes.
21.Why do Brits feel sometimes they have to be polite
A.They want to express their true feelings.
B.They want to let people know the truth.
C.They are kept from saying what they think.
D.They want to represent their social status.

From Asia to America and everywhere in between, Swing(摇摆舞) — an energetic form of dance that includes six-step and eight-step rhythms (节奏) — has taken the world by storm. Making a recent comeback, swing dance floors have popped up all over the world. Many clubs make fans of Swing happy by holding nights when swing music is played, and sometimes even offering classes to attract customers.
Though Swing is now popular worldwide, it first appeared alongside the jazz movements of the 1920s and 1930s in New York City. While listening to jazz, the young black people of that time developed the movements of the Lindy Hop — a style of dance that is best known for a break away or “swing out” move and sudden improvisation (即兴表演).
It was reportedly given this name when a reporter was interviewing a person at the dance hall who was watching other couples dance. When asked what that dance was called, the watcher looked at a newspaper next to him that had an article about Lindbergh — the first person to fly alone across the Atlantic (大西洋) — which was titled, “Lindy Hops the Atlantic”. Then the watcher announced that “Lindy Hop” was the name of the dance, and it has stuck since then.
In 1926, the Savoy Ballroom was the first large business to offer a place for people to listen to swing music and dance. With its huge dance floor, the Savoy became a big success overnight, attracting some of the best dancers and musicians in the New York area.
Within ten years, the Lindy Hop was sweeping through the United States and became a symbol of unity, as young people of all racial (种族的) backgrounds crowded into dance halls to swing the night away. Traditional dance teachers did not welcome it because they thought it was not even a real dance and were quite sure about its demise but Swing has proved them wrong; it continues to be one of the world’s most fun dances.
22.What’s the purpose of this passage
A.To introduce a popular form of dance.
B.To discover the fun secrets of a dance.
C.To tell stories about an energetic dance.
D.To describe the special moves of a dance.
23.Which of the following words has the closest meaning to “demise”
A.Challenge. B.Change. C.Development. D.Death.
24.What can we learn about Swing
A.It’s a lively dance with strict rules.
B.It has a close connection with a pilot.
C.It has a history of over 90 years.
D.It attracts mostly young black people.
25.What can we infer from the passage
A.The dance style will soon be accepted by traditional dance teachers.
B.The name was changed from “Lindy Hop” to “Swing” in the 1940s.
C.The movements of different Swing dancers always look the same.
D.The dance might have become unpopular sometime in its history.

Dear Jack,
I am quite happy to get the news that you want to set up a Students’ Sign Language Club. How exciting!
When it comes to how to make our activities interesting and meaningful, I’d like to share my thoughts and offer some personal suggestions. Firstly, it is a good idea to invite some sign language experts to give us lectures on a weekly basis. Secondly, in order to show our care, we can regularly visit the deaf students in special schools and learn to interact with them, which is also a valuable chance to put what we learned into practice.
Only in this way can we truly appreciate the beauty of sign language and build a bridge between the hearts of the deaf people. Hope you will have great success in your club!
Yours,
Li Hua
