Before I even started school, people felt that I was not going to amount to much. At the age of four, I started speech lessons because even I could not speak well enough to be understood.
First grade was a struggle. I not only had difficulty speaking, but I was expected to learn to read and I just couldn’t do it. My parents grew more and more frustrated. They bought books and offered great rewards if I could read one of them from start to finish to them. Well, with my speech problems and now my reading problems, I did not like to do reading and so refused to do it whenever possible.
Second grade was not much better. It was in the second grade that the teacher decided that I needed special education. I remember the days of taking the physical exams. However, after all that, they decided that I did not qualify for special education.
It was in third grade that a new school was built close to where I lived. I remember going there with my parents and helping to get the school ready so that we could transfer (转学). It was a happy day that we started school at Vandalia. However, things did not get better as my parent expected.
It was now time for fifth grade. Mrs. Wake field was my teacher, and if ever there was a teacher that deserved a gold star, it was her. She did not make me feel upset. Instead, she helped me in so many ways and built my self-confidence so that I actually did believe that I could do something special. And that is just what I did.
For the past 22 years, I have been a fifth grade teacher. Because of Mrs. Wake field’s influence in my life, I am now encouraging students who have had difficulties in their lives to believe that they can overcome and become someone. I have won a large number of awards but I know that all of them belong to one fifth grade teacher who believed in me and challenged me to be all that I could be.
I still have a class picture of her with her fifth grade class hanging on the wall of my office, encouraging other teachers to reach out to their students.

Zhong Kaitong, a fourth-grader from Guangzhou, enjoyed a fun vacation this summer. Instead of attending English or math training courses, she played badminton and basketball most of the time.
A new guideline introduced by central authorities on July 24 helped Zhong enjoy some free time during the summer holiday. Aiming to ease( 减 少 )the schoolwork burden(负担)on primary and junior high school students, the guideline calls for reducing homework, improving the quality of education and regulating( 规范) after-class activities, Xinhua reported.
According to the guideline, children below the third grade will not have homework anymore. It should take no more than 90 minutes for junior high school students to finish their homework.
Off-campus tutoring institutions( 校外培训机构) are not allowed to offer overseas education courses or advanced( 超 前 的 ) teaching. No subject-based training will be allowed on weekends, national holidays or during winter and summer vacations.
More than 75 percent of children in Chinese cities from grades 1 to 12 are taking private tutoring courses, Global Times reported.
“Parents are worried that if their children start behind, they will stay behind. Some training institutions have taken advantage of parents' anxieties(焦虑) to make money. ” said Chen Xianzhe, a professor at South China Normal University. “The
guideline is meant to calm the anxieties of parents and society as a whole. ”
“But this does not mean the tutoring courses will completely disappear, since exams still exist. ” said Chu Zhaohui, a senior researcher at the National Institute of Education Sciences. One-on-one or one-on-two tutoring might see a rise due to this need.
“Therefore, schools should improve their education quality, take the main responsibility for students' education and not push them into tutoring courses.” Chu added.

Pre-school children who spend time together take on one another's personalities, a new research has found. The study shows that environment plays a key role in shaping people's personalities. While genetics still forms the central part of the human psyche ( 心 理 ), the research finds that personality traits (特征) are "contagious" (传染的) among children. "Our finding flies in the face of common assumptions that personality can't be changed," said Dr. Jennifer Neal, co-author of the study.
The researchers studied the personalities and social networks of two pre-school classes for a full school year. One of the classes was a set of three-year-olds, and the other a set of four-year-olds. Children whose friends were hard-working or outgoing gradually took on these personality traits over time. Psychology expert Dr. Emily Dublin said kids are having a far bigger effect on each other than people may realize.
The new study is not the first to explore the contagious effects of personality traits. A 2015 psychology study found that rudeness at work can be contagious as it travels from person to person "like a disease". The study found that seeing a boss being rude to an employee was enough to cause people to be rude to those around them.
The researchers questioned 6,000 people on the social "climate" in their workplaces, which included offices, hotels and restaurants. They found 75 percent of those who took part said they had been treated rudely at least once in the past year. And the study also suggests that merely seeing other people being subjected to rudeness made it more likely that a person would treat their colleagues in the same way. Rudeness could include leaving someone off an invite to a company event, sending unkind emails, finding fault with others or failing to give praise.
Dr. Torkelson believes companies need to be more aware of the harm that rudeness in the workplace can do as it can damage the working environment. She said better training could help to fight against the problem.
What does the underlined part "flies in the face of" in Paragraph1mean
A.Leads to. B.Results from.
C.Goes against. D.Agrees with.
According to Paragraph 2, who have the greatest impact on children's personality
A.Their parents. B.Their friends.
