Electronic timing is older than most people imagine and was used for the first time more than a hundred years ago at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. Initially, the well-known company Ericsson was tasked with developing the technology, but it was the Swedish inventor Ragnar Carlstedt who eventually created the final product.
At the same time, Carlstedt introduced another invention: the finish line camera. The 1, 500-meter Olympic final was extremely close with Arnold Jackson from Great Britain winning by only 0.1 seconds. But it was impossible to decide on the silver medal since the two Americans Abel Kiviat and Norman Taber finished side by side. For the first time in history, the outcome of an Olympic event had to be settled based on a photo finish when Kiviat was judged to be “slightly ahead”.
The significance of these two inventions led a major newspaper to write: “Electronic timing at the Olympic Games. Simultaneous (同时发生的) timing and photography of contestants. A brilliant idea!”
The next step in timekeeping was the photo-finish camera with a time stamp imprinted on each picture, which was introduced at the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles. The 1948 Olympics saw the introduction of another invention with the continuous slit camera (狭缝摄影机), where a film behind a narrow slit rolls (滚动) with the same speed as the runners. Four years later the clocks were connected to the slit camera giving a solution of 1/100 s. But it was not until 1972 that official times were recorded to the 100th of a second.
The next big step in the eighties was to make the camera digital to speed up the feedback (反馈). But the idea behind the slit camera was kept and is still the basis of all timing systems for athletics used today. The only difference is that now there is a very narrow sensor array ( 阵列传感器) instead of the moving film.
After a century technology has reached the point where the whole timing system can be stored in a smartphone. So in a way, the circle was closed when SprintTimer, a sports timer and photo finish app, was developed in the same place and precisely a hundred years after Ragnar Carlstedt.

A.It avoided the use of a moving film.
B.It rolled with the same speed as the runners.
C.It made a 100th-of-a-second record possible.
D.It adopted a new idea for all timing systems used today.
27.What does the underlined part “the circle was closed” in the last paragraph mean
A.Further improvement was discontinued.
B.The problem was back to the origin.

Yellowstone National Park, located in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming, was established as the first national park in the United States. The park is a popular destination for visitors who engical (生态的) tourism as it offers forests, mountains, and many ecosystems to explore. Some of Yellowstone’s most well known landmarks are its geothermal (地热的) hot springs and geysers (间歇泉), the most famous of which is named Old Faithful.
Last fall, Lisa and her friends decided to take a camping trip to Yellowstone National Park. They arranged to stay at one of the park’s many convenient campsites. For their camping trip, they brought their backpacks, sleeping bags, and a cooler of food and drinks. They set up their tents immediately upon arriving at their campsite.
During their trip, Lisa and her friends hiked the many trails (小道) of the park, exploring its natural surroundings. In the forest, they saw a lot of local wildlife. Lisa was blown away by a family of grizzly bears, some gray wolves, and even bald eagles flying overhead. Unexpectedly, she seemed to quite enjoy being in such a great place. They were well protected. Outside of the woods, they admired the beauty of some of Yellowstone’s natural waterfalls.
Since Yellowstone contains many hot springs and the world’s largest area of active geysers, Lisa and her friends visited many different geyser sites. They even spent an afternoon swimming in Yellowstone’s Boiling River. Of all of the sites, Lisa and her friends agreed that Old Faithful was the most impressive. Lisa and her friends waited patiently for the geyser to erupt. After about 40 minutes, a stream of boiling water over 100 feet tall sprayed (喷洒) from the ground and up into the air. Luckily, no one got wet!

France announced on Sunday that it has implemented a 48-hour ban on travel to Britain, joining a growing number of European countries halting travel to Britain after a new strain of the coronavirus was detected in that country. At least six European countries have announced flights will cease if they haven’t done so already, while France and Belgium have banned train travel.
French officials said the 48-hour stoppage would give them time to find a “common doctrine” to stop the spread of the new COVID-19 variant. French President Emmanuel Macron tested positive for the coronavirus on Thursday.
Germany, which holds the EU presidency, called a special crisis meeting for Monday to coordinate a response.
Top health officials in Britain say a new, fast-moving variant of the coronavirus could be up to 70% more transmissible than previous ones. This strain appears to be driving the rapid spread in London and southern England. But there is no evidence the new strain is deadlier or would react differently to the vaccine, according to BBC News.
As a result of the new strain, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Saturday a new tier of coronavirus restrictions, the strictest yet, and canceled the planned five-day Christmas relaxation period that had been planned from December 23 through 27.
“I know how much emotion people invest in this time of year, and how important it is for grandparents to see their grandchildren,” Johnson said Saturday. “But when the virus changes its method of attack, we must change our method of defense.”
32.Why did France implement a 48-hour ban on travel to Britain
A.Because the country was going to have a holiday.
B.Because people in France couldn’t afford it.
C.Because coronavirus broke out in France.
D.Because a new strain of coronavirus was detected in that country.
33.Which of the following statements is true
A.France was the only European country which banned traveling to Britain because of coronavirus.
B.The new variant of the coronavirus is more dangerous.
C.In Britain, the 5-day Christmas relaxation period was cancelled.
D.People in Britain don’t care much about Christmas holiday
34.What’s the feature of the new strain of coronavirus
A.It could be up more transmissible than previous ones.
B.It appears to be driving the rapid spread in the whole Britain.
C.It would react differently to the vaccine.
D.It’s not as deadly as the previous ones.
35.What’s Boris Johnson’s attitude towards the cancel of the Christmas relaxation period
A.Pleased. B.Regretful. C.Doubtful. D.Indifferent.

From bird nests on rooftops to forest channels pulling cool air into city centers, innovative ideas are bringing nature into urban areas, all around the world. Here is a city that has found ways to mix greenery into its cityscapes (城市景色). 36
The High Line on the West side of Manhattan is a 2-kilometer long wheelchair-accessible public park. 37 It closed in the early 1980s and faced destruction before residents worked together to form Friends of the High Line, wanting to put the site to good use.
A design competition in 2003 generated interest and ideas for what to do with the space. 38 But the idea of an above-street level garden was recognized. And so the High Line opened in stages from 2009 to 2019, and is now a city greenway featuring over 150,000 flowers, shrubs and trees.
Engagement with the public is a huge part of the project’s success. In name, the High Line is administered by the NYC Department of Parks Recreation. 39 It’s considered by many to be a model for other cities seeking innovative ways to introduce green space into their urban landscape-Washington D.C. is hoping to follow the project’s example with their 11th Street Bridge Park.
This project shows how possible it is to mix nature into every cityscape. 40 As an innovative and inspirational way, it gives the whole planet a helping hand, even in the most urban of environments.
A.To be more realistic, it has a far more regional impact.
B.They are of great benefit to the population and the environment.
C.It was built along the remains of a section of a disused railway line.
D.To this end, it has introduced a number of “parklets” around the city.
E.The park is maintained and operated by enthusiastic volunteers in reality.
F.Perhaps rather sadly, amid-city rollercoaster (过山车) was considered impractical.
G.By 2030, no household should be more than a ten-minute walk from an accessible park.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was always the little girl who played with magnets on the kitchen floor. I pieced together model roller coasters and exhausted a lot of science kits. Learning from my dad as he designed robots, I formed my own ideas, including an automatic breakfast machine. At 14 years old, I applied to my high school’s Academy of Science, Engineering, and High Technology. As is unfortunately typical in engineering, female students were critically underrepresented in this academy-there were a mere twenty of us out of ninety total students. This was a tough challenge for me: as an ambitious female engineer, I needed to advocate my own talents and abilities in a field where women are often marginalized(边缘化).
Within the first month of the freshman year, we began our first project: a wooden can-crusher(压罐器).I had worked on projects with boys before, but those were nothing like this. The three of us had one month to research, design, build, and test our device-a month full of arguing and frustration. My suggestions were turned down. And I was assigned the “default(默认的)female role” of timekeeper and documentation. I wasn’t expected to be capable of contributing to anything else. We finished with a functional can-crusher, but I knew this was not how I wanted to continue as a female engineer.
By the time junior year rolled around, it was time to face the year-long Engineering Design and Development (EDD) project and state competition. When I agreed to work with two other girls, I had no idea that this would entirely change my perspective of my ability as a team member, a leader and an engineer. For this competition, we created a garage parking aidto help drivers prevent side-view mirror damage. Within our team, we created a safe space where we all valued each other’s input and carried equal responsibilities. After countless experiments and sleepless nights, we were awarded third place at EDD State, which helped me find the confidence I didn’t have before.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Then came the final year-long project for me, an academy senior.

M: Good evening. I am very pleased to be here with my friend, Flexi.
W: Good evening, Flexi. And let me tell all of you that this is definitely the first time I have ever shaken hands with a real live robot! That handshake was rather impressing - he was able to move his hand exactly at the right times and at the same speed as I moved my hand!
M: He has two visual sensors in his head, and he can also sense movement and pressure in his hands. He is able to recognize your hand movements as a wish to shake hands.
W: Amazing! Tell us a little about how Flexi came into being.
M: Well, Flexi is the latest of twelve versions of the robot since we started developing it in around 1993. It took us seven years to invent the first one. In the following 23 years, our aim has always been to produce a robot which can help people in their everyday tasks.
W: Does Flexi have someone controlling him offstage
M: No, he’s able to get things done by himself thanks to a high-tech computer system which he carries around with him.
W: I can’t see anything. Where is it then
M: It’s actually located inside his chest area.

I am going to attend “Science Week” to be held by Embassy of China in the UK, which aims at helping the local people to have a better understanding of China and its science and great scientific achievements.
As far as I am concerned, there are a variety of activities, such as listening to lectures and watching scientific movies. At the same time, you can also have a good knowledge of many famous scientists like Tu Youyou, who has been awarded for her discovery of artemisinin, a vital new treatment for malaria.
In my opinion, it not only helps me love science better but also introduce our country and its development, which is of great benefit to the world.

Then came the final year-long project for me, an academy senior. I created a team of people whom I respected and who respected me in return. As a group of two guys and two girls, we all brainstormed, calculated, designed and constructed together. I remember the numerous times when we washed oil and metal remains off our hands together after the laborious work. I also remember we once got stuck with several technical problems, however, we spared no effort to tackle them. After what seemed like centuries, a two-passenger, gasoline-powered go-kart was completed. The other day, when we tested it out at the top speed of 27 mph, we felt excited. At that moment, I felt proud of my team. I felt proud I bravely soldiered on my dreams.
Thanks to all these experiences, I’ve grown a lot. I think I have gained the courage to stand up for myself and the abilities as a leader and a strong team member. In the process of growth, I learn to be patient. I understand the meaning of confidence and cooperation. I want to thank my dad for cultivating my interest in engineering. I know I will encounter many thistles and thorns in the future life, but I don’t fear. I have been determined to succeed as a biomedical engineer, designing and innovating medical equipment to improve healthcare and human life.
