It's terrible and strange, but I don't really remember much about the hurricane itself. It all happened so suddenly. I was sitting in my room with my cat, Smartie, on my lap, when the roof just flew off. I was so frightened that I just froze.
Mom cried to get out quickly, but it was already too late by then. The rain was coming down so hard and so fast. Our street turned into a river in seconds. We were going nowhere.
At first, I was pleased we could stay at home, but soon it got really tough. Without a roof, staying inside was too dangerous. We just had drinking water that was sent to us by helicopter, but it was never enough. It was August, so it was really, really hot and it smelled so bad everywhere! 1 just spent the days watching the boats going up and down the street and looking out for Smartie. He had disappeared the moment the storm hit.
Living in the open air, we became breakfast, lunch and dinner for the mosquitoes. But Mom said that whatever happens, we should always try to see the good side of things. It was difficult to stay positive, though. All we had left were the clothes on our backs. But as Mom kept on reminding us, we were all together and safe. Mom's words made us feel better. I remember us all lying under the midnight sky and looking up at the stars. Because there were no lights, we could see the Big Dipper, and the Milky Way. It was amazing! Despite the disaster, moments like those gave us hope for the future.
Although it was only a few days before we were rescued, it felt like months. We were taken to another town in a faraway county. Thankfully, Smartie came home just in time. None of us knew that we wouldn't be back for quite a while then.
Now, one year has passed and I'm back home in New Orleans. Some families have yet to return, but many others have come back. Although we are surrounded by reminders of the disaster. we are working together to rebuild our homes and our lives. Now we have another chance to look up at the stars of New Orleans, their beauty inspiring us and giving us confidence to move on.

When students got their textbooks at the beginning of the year at San Mateo High School, they also received the Yondr pouch(口袋),a locking device for their phones. The phone slides into it and gets locked through a magnetic(磁力的) device. It’s not unlocked again until the final bell rings. The procedure will repeat every day for the rest of the school year.
Adam Gelb, the vice-president,ran a pilot project last year with 20 students and decided to do a school-wide,bell to bell program for this school year. The Yondr pouch is a start-up in San Francisco with a mission to create phone-free spaces, something that is the very thought with Gelb.
“I really think it’s about being present and engaging in the adult that’s trying to teach you,and your peers that might be in your small group. That’s part of the main philosophy that we’re trying to spread,” he said.
Brad Friedman, another teacher at the school, said he was becoming concerned about overuse of phones at school. He said he often saw students completely lost in their phones, some not socializing at all with other students.
This week,he’s already seeing the difference.“Everyone else is socializing and eating lunch together. That’s what I wasn’t seeing enough of when phone usage was at its worst,” he said.
As a senior at San Mateo High School, Djelani Phillips-Diop said he definitely panicked at first when he heard he had to lock his phone.“I panicked,I guess. Last year when we had phones,I was using it every day,” he said.
In case of emergency, every classroom has the unlocking device.Teachers still have access to their own cellphones and desk phones.“We’ve gotten all 1,700 students unlocked with a matter of minutes,” said Gelb.
We spoke to four students who, despite their initial panic, agreed that a phone-free school experience has its benefits.

Countries around the globe are spending billions of dollars and lots of time on various space missions, whether to Mars or other planets much further away. Some people argue that we should stop wasting time and money exploring space. Instead, we should feed the poor and find immediate solutions to other problems, such as pollution and fatal diseases. However, others feel this is a shallow view which fails to realize how exploring space helps us.
Firstly, exploring space has already made a difference in the fight against world hunger. It has directly resulted in the many satellites that now orbit Earth. A number of the satellites record data on land and weather patterns. Then the data is transmitted to scientists on Earth. After careful analysis, the scientists can provide useful recommendations and advice for farmers. As a result, space-based science has helped farming in its efforts to grow enough food to feed Earth's increasing population.
Secondly, space exploration has already promoted technological improvements that benefit us all. High-end products around the world are made to a higher standard now because of advanced technology which was first created to meet the requirements for space exploration. For example, space technologies have helped the research and development of different types of new material. They have also helped companies make better heart monitors and other machines that doctors regularly use. Today, space technologies are widely used in all kinds of industries, and everyday products, such as memory foam pillows and smartphone cameras, are changing our lives.
Finally, sending astronauts into space has helped people to think about the world's problems and even to find ways to solve them. Seeing pictures of our planet as an island in a black sea made people realize that our planet's resources are limited. In order to provide for such a rapidly increasing population, scientists are trying to find other planets that could one day be our new home. The greatest attention at present is on Mars because it is closer to Earth. In the future humans may live on both planets.
In closing, exploring space provides the world with many different benefits. Therefore, it should continue so as to provide new and better solutions to people's short-term and long-term problems.
32.What will the writer go on to say next
A. How to send many more satellites into space. B. When to live on Mars.
C. How to use space technologies to make everyday products. D. How to go on exploring space.
33.What did help the research and development of different types of new material
A. Space technologies. B. Many weather satellites.
C. Excellent astronauts. D. Billions of dollars and lots of time.
34.Which one of the following can't be learnt about according to this passage
A. Scores of the satellites record data on land and weather patterns.
B. Most people argue that we'd stop wasting time and money exploring space.
C. Space technologies are widely used in all kinds of industries.
D. Human beings may live on both planets someday.
35.What does the underlined phrase “In closing" in the last paragraph mean
A. Most importantly. B. In addition. C. To conclude. D. What's worse.
第二节 七选五(共 5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
Have you ever forgotten to lock the door of your house Or, have you ever forgotten to switch off the TV or computer These kinds of things happen to us all the time, waste resources, and can sometimes lead to problems. However, in the not — too — distant future, we will be living in smart homes that will lock the door for us when we are away and remember to switch off the TV when we forget. ______36_____
Intelligent Controls
Today, we have to use switches for our lights, knobs for our appliances, and remote controls for our TVs and air conditioners. ____37______The future home will use integrated sensors to tell when you leave home each morning, and then go into an energy-efficient mode all by itself. You will no longer have to think about turning switches on and off yourself. Your home will also learn your daily routine and preferences, so everything will be ready for you when you get home each evening. Your lights will come on the instant you enter the door along with your favourite music or TV programmes, and you will find your dinner already prepared for you. All controls will respond to voice commands, so if you want to change your routine, you just say aloud what you want and the home system will obey.
Regular Health Checks
In addition, your smart home will be monitoring your health for you every day. Your bed, for example, will record how well you sleep every night. It will also be checking your body weight. If you start to have sleep or weight problems, it will send a warming to your phone. It will also give you suggestions on a healthier diet and how to sleep better. _____38______They can warn you early if there is something abnormal or if you have a critical illness, such as cancer, and potentially save your life.
No More Disasters
Smart homes will be able to prevent serious damage from accidents. For example, if a water pipe starts leaking, or if there is a short in the electrical wiring, your smart home will detect it and provide you with the relevant information. ______39________
This smart technology is not a fantasy. _____40___________In this sense, the home of tomorrow is already the home of today. Nevertheless, it will take some years before most new homes begin to use this new technology.
A. In the future, we will be using advanced technology every day for automatic control of just about everything in our home.
B. Many of these new innovations are already available and being used in some homes.
C. These smart homes will keep us secure, save us energy, and provide a more comfortable environment to live in.
D. We can also travel to many places of interest with our family members.
E. Robots will lock the door, switch off the TV or computer for us.
F. This way you will be able to fix the problem before your home becomes flooded or catches fire.
G. Smart toilets will be keeping constant track of your health as well.

第二节续写 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事.(满分25分)
A rock as big as a house. That's how the guide book described Giant Rock. I was finally going to see it, on snowshoes, with my three older cousins and my dad. I'd been snowshoeing before, and I liked the adventure of hiking through deep snow along side wild-animal tracks.
The trail ran uphill alongside a stone wall. It was easy to follow because red markers were nailed to the trees and the snow had been packed down by other hikers. At the top of the hill, we turned onto the purple trail. My cousins and dad were faster than I was, but I managed to keep up.
The late afternoon sun felt warm, although it was already sinking lower. Finally, we reached a hill and saw the big rock sitting alone. My cousins and I high-fived each other and jogged down the slope until we stood at the base, breathless.
Noticing the sun had sunk even lower, dad said after a few minutes, "let's head back". I was a little behind the group when I noticed a set of animals tracks I didn't recognize. They were hard to see among the snowshoe prints, so I followed them off the trail for a closer look. There were no claw(爪) marks, which meant they didn't belong to a dog or a fox. I was thinking about it when I suddenly realized how quiet it had gotten. "Hey!" I shouted. "Where is everyone " Nothing I was totally alone.
They couldn't have gone far, I thought, stepping back onto the trail. "I'll catch up to them if I hurry." I came to a crossroad where I could turn left or go straight, but both trails had purple markers. It was difficult to choose. Soon it was too dark to tell what colour the markers were. And I couldn't just follow my own footsteps because there were so many tracks from other hikers.
