Leslie Nielsen’s childhood was a difficult one, but he had one particular shining star in his life — his uncle, who was a well-known actor. The admiration and respect his uncle earned inspired Nielsen to make a career (职业) in acting. Even though he often felt he would be discovered to be a no-talent, he moved forward, gaining a scholarship to the Neighborhood Playhouse and making his first television appearance a few years later in 1948. However, becoming a full-time, successful actor would still be an uphill battle for another eight years until he landed a number of film roles that finally got him noticed.
But even then, what he had wasn’t quite what he wanted. Nielsen always felt he should be doing comedy but his good looks and distinguished voice kept him busy in dramatic roles. It wasn’t until 1980 — 32 years into his career — that he landed the role it would seem he was made for in Airplane! That movie led him into the second half of his career where his comedic presence alone could make a movie a financial success even when movie reviewers would not rate it highly.
Did Nielsen then feel content in his career Yes and no. He was thrilled to be doing the comedy that he always felt he should do, but even during his last few years, he always had a sense of curiosity, wondering what new role or challenge might be just around the comer. He never stopped working, never retired.
Leslie Nielsen’s devotion to acting is wonderfully inspiring. He built a hugely successful career with little more than plain old hard work and determination. He showed us that even a single desire, never given up on, can make for a remarkable life.

The JD report said Chinese shoppers are also attaching greater importance to health and personal image management, with personal care, beauty, smart-home and healthcare products gaining popularity.
Wang Yun, a researcher at the Academy of Macroeconomic Research, said: “Chinese shoppers are more concerned about safety and health, and they prefer to buy high-quality products, as well as enjoy services that make their life safer and more comfortable. With the adoption of continuously enhanced COVID-19 prevention and control measures, China’s consumer market has witnessed a notable recovery, Wang said, adding that she is optimistic that consumption momentum (势头) will be maintained this year, with the growth rate expected to reach more than 6 percent.
Liu Hui, director of JD’ s Consumption and Industry Development Research Institute, said tech-savvy members of Generation Z — people born between the mid-1990s and the early 2010s — are emerging as mainstream consumers and the major force driving the growth of new products. Brand owners and manufacturers are increasingly placing greater emphasis on purchasing demand among the post-1995 generation, and are customizing new products especially for this group, Liu said.
This year China will focus on boosting domestic demand by prioritizing the recovery and expansion of consumption. Analysts said the consumption recovery will be the main force boosting the nation’s economic rebound (回升) in 2023.

When an ant dies, other ants move the dead insect out. Sometimes, the dead ant get moved away very soon—within an hour of dying. This behavior is interesting to scientists, who wonder how ants know for sure—and so soon—that another ant is dead.
One scientist recently came up with a way to explain this ant behavior. Dong-Hwan Choe is a biologist. Choe found that Argentine ants have a chemical on the outside of their bodies that signals to other ants, “I’m dead—take me away.”
But there’s a twist to Choe’s discovery. Choe says that the living ants—not just the dead ones —have this death chemical. In other words, while an ant crawls around, perhaps in a picnic or home, it’s telling other ants that it’s dead.
What keeps ants from dragging away the living ants Choe found that Argentine ants have two additional chemicals on their bodies, and these tell nearby ants something like, “Wait—I’m not dead yet.” So Choe’s research turned up two sets of chemical signals in ants: one says, “I’m dead,” and the other set says, “I’m not dead yet.”
Other scientists have tried to figure out how ants know when another ant is dead. If an ant is knocked unconscious, for example, other ants leave it alone until it wakes up. That means ants know that unmoving ants can still be alive.
Choe suspects that when an Argentine ant dies, the chemical that says “Wait- I’m not dead yet” quickly goes away. Once that chemical is gone, only the one that says “I’m dead” is left. “It’s because the dead ant no longer smells like a living ant that it gets carried to the graveyard, not because its body releases new unique chemicals after death,” said Choe. When other ants detect the “dead” chemical without the “not dead yet” chemical, they drag away the body.
Understanding this behavior may help scientists figure out how to stop Argentine ants from invading new places and causing problems. Choe would like to find a way to use the newly discovered chemicals to spread ant killer to Argentine ant nests.
The ants’ removal behavior is important to the overall health of the nest. “Being able to quickly remove dead individuals and other possible sources of disease is extremely important to all animals living in societies, including us,” says Choe. “Think about all the effort and money that we invest daily in waste management.”

M:Now I’d like to talk to you about the final exam.The exam will be held next Thursday,the last day of the exam week.Remember to bring along two or three pens in case you run out of ink.You will have to answer three of the five questions to write your articles.The exam will be quite difficult,which means you will be responsible for all of the subject matters we’ve covered in class.I would suggest you review your mid-term exam and the textbooks.The final will count for 55% of your grade in the course.The research project will count for 20%,and the mid-term 25%.I’ll be in my office almost all day on Tuesday of next week.If you run into any problems, please feel free to stop in.Good luck with your study,and I’ll see you on Tuesday.
