You’ve probably tried easy center-city Beijing rides if you enjoy riding. Now it’s time to level up your rides so they will take you out into the countryside and attractive mountains.
Death Valley
Approximate distance: 100 km loop (环线)
It may sound terrifying, but Beijing’s cyclists named this northern route “Death Valley” on account of the huge tomb it passes, not the number of on-road accidents it has seen. In reality, it’s the closest, mostly car-free loop to the city center and great for really stretching your legs.
Tuesdays/Thursday TTT
Approximate distance: 54 km loop
While it’s not particularly scenic, there are few traffic lights, and the roads are not too busy and have adequate bike lanes on each side, making it a relatively trouble-free ride. If you’d like to ride with a group, seek out early morning Beijing rider groups and join them on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 5 a. m. or 6 a. m. depending on the season.
The Verse
Approximate distance: 120 km loop
It passes a cafe with good (although expensive) food, and even high-end accommodation, but the best part is their super welcoming attitude towards cyclists. It’s a hike that is well worth the effort, as you are rewarded with amazing views of the Great Wall upon arrival, and a ride back that is mostly downhill.
Tongzhou Grand Canal Forest Park
Approximate distance: 700 km loop
This park is the closest place for riders to enjoy the Grand Canal from Beijing. The Grand Canal is a true wonder in China, and one of the greatest civil engineering projects in history. The oldest parts of it date back to the 5th century BC. It will be a fun ride here.

Naturalist Enzo Suma, who is now 40, lives in Puglia, a region in southern Italy whose long coastline faces the Adriatic Sea. Floating waste accumulates in this relatively enclosed part of the Mediterranean, unlike the open ocean, where the waste tends to be spread over a vast area. Feeling concerned about that, Suma makes it a habit to pick up the washed-up waste along the shore, especially after big winter storms.
One day, Suma was walking along the beach near his home when he discovered a bottle of Coke. Suma noticed on the bottle that the price, clearly printed on the bottom, was in lire, a currency (货币) that hadn’t been used in Italy since it was replaced by the euro in 2002. Could a plastic container have well survived in the Mediterranean, he wondered, for about two decades
That led him to founding the Archeoplastica museum. It has a collection of about 500 unique pieces recovered from Italian shores and the Coke bottle is the first one of them. All collection demonstrates the unsettling life force of plastic waste in the environment. “Seeing that a product people may have used 30, 40, or 50 years ago remains still unchanged, you’ll feel different. It’s a great shock,” Suma said to a reporter. So Suma often exhibits selected pieces from the Archeoplastica collection at local schools around his hometown of Ostuni.
“The playful side of the work allows you to arrive at the less beautiful side of things,” Suma acknowledged. “Plastic is a kind of useful substance. But it’s unthinkable that a water bottle, made from a material designed to last so long, can be used for just a few days—or even minutes—before becoming garbage. Clean the beaches. Clean the oceans. Recycle. But if we are still throwing out plastics, none of those are going to be long-term solutions.”
4. What’s Suma’s concern about his living place
A. Its long coastline is disappearing. B. Big storms frequently hit the area.
C. Floating waste spreads over a vast area. D. The waste pollution on shore is worsening.
5. What can be learned about the objects in the Archeoplastica museum
A. They have a history of more than half a century.
B. They were quite valuable before turning into waste.
C. They’re more like educational exhibits than garbage.
D. They have stronger life force than ordinary plastic products.
6. Which of the following can best describe Enzo Suma
A. Creative, devoted and socially responsible. B. Enthusiastic, ambitious and adventurous.
C. Generous, cautious and humorous. D. Curious, efficient and playful.
7. What does Suma intend to tell us by his words in the last paragraph
A. The birth of plastics has greatly served humans.
B. The key to tackling the plastic pollution is to stop littering.
C. The plastic problem can be solved by cleaning and recycling.
D. People should be more aware of the powerful functions of plastics.

The Door-to-Door Bookstore, whose author is Carsten Henn, translated from the German by Melody Shaw, is an undoubtedly emotional, inspiring novel about friendships between generations developed through books.
Carl Kollhoff, a 72-year-old bookseller in southern Germany, is beloved among his customers for finding just the right books for them. But his role is threatened when a new boss is determined to push out the star employee.
One of the limited highlights of Carl’s life is to deliver books every evening to a handful of shut-in customers. The selections are made by their stated preferences—for happy endings, tragedy, philosophical works and so on. Trouble happens when a pretty wise (and a little annoying) motherless 9-year-old girl tags along with him on his rounds. She decides Carl is not actually giving his customers what they really need, and comes up with a plan to correct this.
Like Carl’s backpack, Henn manages to fill his novel with books without weighing it down. Chapter titles suggest that classics are involved: The Stranger, The Red and the Black, Great Expectations. Carl, who is terrible with names, assigns a literary character to each customer—Mr. Darcy, Mrs. Longstocking, The Reader—to help him keep them straight.
We gradually come to know these townsfolk: the abused wife, and the ambitious writer with the soothing voice who is paid to read classics to cigar factory workers.
The Door-to-Door Bookstore is also filled with amusing observations. Carl divides readers into hares (野兔), who race through books; fish, who allow books to carry them along on their current; curious lapwings (鸟头麦鸡), who jump ahead to see the ending first; and tortoises, who fall asleep each night after a single page and take months to get through a book, having to turn back repeatedly to check what they’ve forgotten.
Readers will have fun finding themselves in these pages.
8. Where is the text most probably taken from
A. A review of a book. B. An essay on literature classics.
C. An introduction to a bookstore. D. A biography of Carl Kollhoff.
9. What is the main idea of the novel
A. The takeover of a family business by a young girl.
B. The friendship between Carl and a 9-year-old girl.
C. Carl’s struggle to find the right books for his customers.
D. The competition among different bookstores in Germany.
10. Why does the author of the passage mention some classics
A. To compare the book with them. B. To stress the importance of them.
C. To help readers understand the book. D. To show their popularity.
11. What does the author mean by saying “Readers will have fun finding themselves in these pages”
A Readers will relate to the characters and situations in the novel.
B. Readers will find satisfaction in correctly guessing the endings of the books.
C. Readers will enjoy the different ways people read books.
D. Readers will be amused by the diverse personalities of the customers.
D
If I’m anxiously waiting for an important telephone call, or stuck in writer’s block with a tight deadline, I’ll unavoidably rearrange my record collection, tidy my desk or clear up sheets of paper dotted around my office. It’s sometimes the most relaxed time I feel all day. I bet I’m not alone in this.
Psychologists suggest the perfect pleasure of puttering (从容做事) might be explained from many aspects. At the most superficial level puttering may be meaningful especially when we are in a situation where we feel stressed and helpless. That’s because puttering around in the kitchen for instance occupies the mind. In this way, we devote time and effort to things which are within our grasp instead of those bothering us.
Compared with other distracting activities, such as playing computer games or watching TV, many people enjoy puttering for the reason that it has the advantage of being useful for increasing their “perceived control”.
Just consider a classic paper by professors Ellen Langer and Judith Rodin. The study took place at a nursing home, where participants were divided into two groups. The first were asked to make their room on their own: they were allowed to arrange the furniture however they liked, and they were given a plant that. they had to care for by themselves. The second group, meanwhile, were told that the staff could take care of everything; they did not even have to water their plant. Over the following 18 months, the residents who took charge of their room enjoyed better physical health.
The benefits do not end there. If your puttering takes the form of organizing, you may find that the tidier environment itself is a form of comfort. Like all activities, the extent of these benefits will be influenced by your personal tastes and the associations that you link with the tasks. Those who expect to have a clear mind after a run are the most likely to return home with a clear head. Tidying, cleaning, and sorting will be no different.
12. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 1 refer to
A. Cleaning up the desk before leaving the office. B. Calling for help when facing writer’s block.
C. Drawing comfort from some simple tasks. D. Appreciating music while writing a paper.
13. Why do many people prefer puttering to other distracting activities
A. It inspires them to be single-minded. B. It helps them boost their perceived control.
C. It makes them stay focused on their targets. D. It prevents them wasting time on useless things.
14. What advice may Langer and Rodin give to the elderly
A. Make friends with those sharing similar interests. B. Select a nursing home with great caution.
C. Take responsibility for some housework. D. Keep less furniture in their rooms.
15. Which is the most suitable title for the text
A. How do our preferences affect the benefits of puttering
B. How does perceived control help the elderly
C. Why do people tend to do irrelevant things at work
D. Why do small tasks have great healing powers

Today was Community Service Day at school. Maya’s class was going to make cards for the seniors living in a nursing home. It was also the first day Maya would be wearing her leg brace (腿支架) to school, which was designed to help her walk more steadily and smoothly.
It was a cold autumn morning, Maya looked down, feeling embarrassed. To make it lovelier, she had delicately decorated the brace with pretty butterfly patterns. Still, she was unsure about others’ reaction. All morning at school, kids kept glancing at her brace. To her relief, they didn’t say anything.
In the classroom, Maya was drawing little green buds (芽) and pretty flowers when her friend Samir came over and sat by her. She felt his eyes fixed on her brace and heard him asking, “What’s that for ” Not knowing what to say, Maya pretended she didn’t hear him. After a few seconds of awkwardness, she glanced back at him, and found that he looked a little sad.
After lunch, the class set off. The nursing home was on a small hill and all of them walked there happily along the path. Maya found that the brace did make it easier for her to walk up.
Maya and Samir were paired up with a lady who was 83 years old. There at the end of the hall in a wheelchair, with a big smile on her face, sat the lady, wearing a pink coat, with red lipstick and beautiful earrings. She looked bright and full of life. Moving flexibly and fast towards Maya and Samir, she greeted first. “I’m Joan, ” she said cheerfully, “Glad to meet you. ”
Maya and Samir handed her the cards they made. Joan looked at Samir’s card carefully and spoke with admiration, “You’ve written a poem! That’s so artistic!” Samir’s face reddened with shyness. Then Joan turned to Maya’s picture. “The first flowers of spring!” she cried in delight. “You really have a gift for using colour!” she said. Clearly, Joan’s praise added great power into Maya.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

D 5. C 6. A 7. B

A. Readers will relate to the characters and situations in the novel.
B. Readers will find satisfaction in correctly guessing the endings of the books.
C. Readers will enjoy the different ways people read books.
D. Readers will be amused by the diverse personalities of the customers.
【答案】8 A 9. B 10. C 11. A

At the most superficial level, puttering may be meaningful especially when we are in a situation where we feel stressed and helpless.
C 13. B 14. C 15. D

故填their。
固定搭配tend to do sth. 故填to be used。
根据上文中的“Livestock stay on the ground floor”以及表示“对比”的连词while可知,此处应表示“在……上方”,用介词为above或者over。故填above/over。

There is a popular/prevailing idea among students that copying vocabulary repetitively is the best way to memories the English words and expressions. But I have a different view on that. Not only is it ineffective in memorizing words and expressions, also students tend to be lost in the usages.
To better improve the efficiency of memorizing vocabulary, I think it is best to put those words and expressions into sentences. It will become easier to remember the words and their usages as the vocabulary builds up. Also, making up sentences using the words is kindly advised. In this way, words will be not forgotten easily.

In a sudden wave of bravery Maya asked, “What’s it like being in a wheelchair ” “It helps me get around,” Joan said simply. Then, grinning, she added, “You’d be surprised at how fast I can go in this thing!” Right then, she moved the wheelchair across the room, turning around, back and forth. And what surprised Maya most was that she didn’t detect any pity or embarrassment from her. Then Maya looked up and found Joan was smiling, eyes purposefully resting on her brace. It was then that a spark of power was lit up deep inside Maya. That afternoon, the three of them had a pleasant talk over lots of things until it was dusk.
Deeply impressed by Joan, Maya offered to sit beside Samir on the bus ride back home. “Joan is great. I like her.” Samir admired. Maya nodded, lost in thought. With Joan’s wheelchair and smile in mind, she summoned up her courage and said, “The brace keeps my toe up so I can walk better.” “Really ” Samir looked amazed, reached out and touched it gently. “That’s super cool!” His words were so sincere that Maya felt warm and moved. It was a reaction that she expected deep inside her heart. Though it was autumn outside, it felt like spring for Maya. A little green bud was bursting — she and her brace looked cool, beautiful and dynamic in her and others’ eyes.
