第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共10小题;每小题2.5分,满分25分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
One evening, I was on the air as usual, broadcasting my radio show, taking requests, chatting with listeners, and looking through e-mails. I stopped on an e-mail begging for help. It was from a woman named Winifred at a refugee(难民)camp at Buduburam in Ghana. She needed money to care for three small children. I was about to hit delete(删除)— it had to be a cheat-but something stopped me. I had a chance to go there for a report the next week.
I had a picture in my head of what I thought I’d see. But the reality of the camp was nothing that I could have ever prepared myself for. I found Winifred and her family among more than 42,000 others, surviving on one meal a day-sometimes less, with no clean water, no toilets. The suffering was extreme. I helped Winifred’s family.
But there was so much more need. Where could I possibly start to make a difference
One day not long after I’d gotten back from Ghana, I went into my kitchen to get a snack. A small sound stopped me. Plink. The tap was dripping(滴落)ever so slightly. I couldn’t take my eyes off that tiny, shining drop. Water. It seemed like such a simple, basic thing for me. But for the people at Buduburam, it was a matter of life or death.
I turned off the tap, tight. Suddenly I knew what I had to do. I created a project called Point Hope, to bring water to the people at Buduburam. Today there are 12 pumping stations at the camp.
I’ve returned to Ghana many times to check in on the water projects, and meet with people. They call me mum. They remind me of Ghana-where so much remains to be done. I strongly believe that with enough devotion and faith, we can bring more hope. You! Me! All of us!
21. What did the author do with the email
A. She deleted it at once. B. She shared it with listeners.
C. She reported it the next week. D. She decided to check its contents.
22. How did the author feel when she arrived at Ghana
A. Shocked. B. Excited. C. Disappointed. D. Annoyed.
23. What’s the best title of the passage
A. Drops of Hope B. Call for Help C. Email of Good Ideas D. Experience of a Camp
B
It’s official. Britain is to be reforested. A Tree Action Plan will deliver half a billion more trees by 2050.
Britain is one of the most treeless countries in Europe, trees covering about 10 percent of its land - around a quarter of the European average. The bare state of the British landscape is nothing new. It is a false idea that a squirrel could ever have crossed the country by jumping from tree to tree.
Certainly, at around three billion of trees, we have twice as many as a century ago. However, about a third of them is in monoculture(单一种植)plantations of fast-growing non-native species like Sitka spruce, grown to make paper. These plantations lack biodiversity - more tree farms than forests.
But it would be great to have more trees: for the climate, for biodiversity and for ourselves.
Can we do it Past efforts to regreen Britain have not gone too well. In the 1990s, the government had a plan for a national forest in the Midlands. It promised 30 million trees. Thirty years on, they have managed nine million. Older readers may remember the project “Plant a Tree” in 1973. I remember planting one in Cambridge. But the trees were taken little care of and nobody tracked them. Mine died, as no doubt did many others.
The trick is not to repeat past mistakes by growing single-species forests. We need ecological(生态的)diversity. Another rule should be to plant where there were trees before. But if the rules for planting begin to sound a bit troublesome, maybe there is a better way. Not to plant at all. Often it is better just to create room for trees to regenerate naturally, self-seeding from nearby woodlands. Consider what the author of the best-selling book Wilding did on herd farm. She went away from the fields and stood back, letting the trees self-seed from nearby woodlands with the help of birds that brought in seeds. Two decades on, she had a woodland. My final suggestion is that instead of throwing all our money into headline-friendly but short-sighted planting projects in the countryside, let’s have more trees where most of us live, too.
24. What do we learn about Britain
A. It was well-wooded in Europe. B. It has a relatively low number of trees.
C. It has taken on a new look with more trees. D. It was a country of various kinds of animals.
25. What is paragraph 5 mainly about
A. The trees died from lack of care. B. There was a big need to regreen Britain.
C. The government’s promise was not kept. D. The previous attempts didn’t work well.
26. How many suggestions does the author give
A.2. B.3. C.4. D.5.

A British company has developed a robotic hand that it says can be updated to perform new actions requested by the user.
The device is designed to work like a human hand. It uses electrical signals from muscles in the upper arm. Sensors are placed against the skin of the upper arm to detect muscle movements. A control system then translates these movements into commands for the robotic hand, typically to open or close the hand.
The British company, COVVI, developed the robotic hand called Nexus. It says the device can be updated through a computer application program or app, remotely(远程地)from anywhere in the world. These updates can provide improvements, new features, and problem fixes directly to the Nexus without the need to visit a specific office or to send the hand back to COVVI.
It is a really powerful thing and a first to market. Nexus uses the wireless technology Bluetooth to permit the company’s experts to update the robotic hand for users. Some other companies have created products that can also be app-controlled, but COVVI’s robotic hand is different because the updates can be sent to an individual device.
One Nexus user is Australian swimmer Jessica Smith, who was born without a left hand. Smith was fitted with the device in April at the age of 37. She said the device was already creating new movements for her although the update process took a few hours. “I’m adding and expanding on who I am by being able to access technology that’s never been available before,” she said.
27. What is the sensors’ function
A. To move the upper arm. B. To comfort the upper arm.
C. To send messages to the muscle. D. To catch electrical activity in the muscle.
28. What does a user need to do to update Nexus
A. Call COVVI. B. Access an app.
C. Control a remote. D. Go to an appointed office.
29. What makes Nexus different from other robotic hands
A. Product safety. B. Update sequence. C. Personal service. D. Market influence.
30. How does Smith like the device
A. It is time saving. B. It is life changing. C. It is quite common. D. It is far from satisfying.
第二节(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Is your life being restricted(限制)by limiting beliefs that you’re holding on to Like many, you may find yourself stuck in an unhappy relationship and your life is unsatisfying. 31
It’s probably not due to a lack of ability, physical or monetary reasons. 32 It’s those inner limiting beliefs that hold you back.
33 Proven studies show that 80% of the time what holds you back most is your own belief system or, to be more exact, your limiting beliefs. If you allow these limiting beliefs to influence all future decisions, quite possibly they’ll ruin any chance of true success you’ll ever have!
34 It’s important to clean out the old baggage(看法)from the past to make room for the new. First, identify behavior problems and limiting beliefs that keep re-occurring in your life. Take a few moments to think about beliefs you hold that might be holding you back, like “I’ll never meet the perfect woman because I’m ugly…” Second, choose a belief you would like to have instead-make the decision to let your limiting belief go and adopt new behaviours based upon new positive powerful beliefs. 35
It is your choice that matters most. Let go of your limiting beliefs and begin moving forward.
A. I will overcome it.
B. So it is time to let go.
C. You need to look inside.
D. So you have to look forward.
E. Yet you seem unable to do anything about them.
F. Limiting beliefs is potentially destroying your future.
G For example, you can replace “I am ugly” with “I can attract the right partner”.

In the not-too-distant future we will be living in smart homes which will provide us 51 a more comfortable and convenient life.
First of all, the switches, knobs and remote controls 52 (use)in our today’s life will be replaced because all devices in smart homes can run 53 (automatic). So we won’t worry about forgetting 54 (turn)the devices off and our smart home will go into 55 energy- efficient code by itself when we are out. In addition, our smart home will monitor our health, with our bed 56 (record)how well we sleep every night. Our bed can even detect our 57 (weigh)problems and give us a healthier diet. Smart homes will also be able to prevent damage. If a pipe starts leaking, our smart home can detect 58 and give us relevant information, preventing great loss.
In fact, the smart home is not a fantasy and many new innovations are being put into practice. For example, voice commands for smart home products, most of 59 are locks, alarms, lights and temperature controls, are already in use in many homes. Parenting teenagers was challenging. For a long time, I could feel the tension between Jordan, my teenage son and me, especially over his curfew.(儿童晚归时间的规定)
One Sunday afternoon, the unpleasant discussion happened again.
“I’m seventeen years old, but I still have a curfew. None of my friends has a curfew. You don’t trust me.” Jordan said.
“It’s not about trust,” I said. “It’s about wanting what’s best for you and I want to protect you.”
“Protect me from what Having fun ” He rolled his eyes and walked away.
I sighed, trying to hold back my tears. How could I make Jordan see that those rules existed because I love him, not because I was trying to control him.
I decided to go for a walk, hoping the cool October air would clear my head. I opened the front door and nearly stepped on him: Meatball, the small black cat we had adopted two weeks ago.
Meatball used to be a homeless cat and until now he still hadn’t adjusted to the life of a full-time indoor cat. After a few hours in the house, he’d sit by the door, begging for someone to let him back outside. After a few hours outside, he’d sit by the door again, ready to come back in the house. He just really liked being able to come and go as he pleased. “How I wished I were a cat like Meatball.” Jordan kept saying over and over.
One snowy night in January, the temperature was unusually low. Meatball stood at the door, begging to go outside again. I patted his head, telling him to stay in for his own good or he would freeze. Jordan whistled nearby and went into his room.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 开头已给出。
The next morning, I found Meatball missing. On the drive home from the animal doctor’s office, petting Meatball’s head, Jordan apologized to me.
