With summer drawing to a dose, parents are helpless.
Camp’s over. The kids’ friends have left for warmer places. A trip to the pool doesn't bring the same excitement as it did in June. And so many families have no choice but to go for a trip to the amusement park.
Whether you’re thinking of Six Flags, Sesame Place, Hersheypark or Dutch Wonderland, don't do it—you’ll be sorry. Amusement parks—especially water parks—have never been more popular. More than 26 million people went to Six Flags last year. These parks bring out the worst in kids and parents alike. What starts out as a special treat ends up in disappointment and tears.
As soon as you get to the park, you pay a couple of hundred dollars for a family of four. Already, expectations are unrealistic as parents start to do the math. How many rides will I get for the money The answer—at least in August—is four.
That’s because of the lines. Time stops as you stand in line leading to even the least exciting ride. Over and over we count the number of people in front of us, wondering how many more rounds there’ll be before our turn. Then there are the other parents—some of whom seem to think the lines are part of the game.
At Dutch Wonderland last weekend, one father walked up to my kids and asked if they were in line. For five minutes, he had his daughter stand behind them. When I turned my head, he had her stand ahead of them. Then he did it to the kids next in line, too.
By the end of the day, you see mothers and fathers buy their kids ice cream again and again to ease the influences of the heat, disappointment and anger.
It’s like they’ve forgotten—it was all the kids’ idea in the first place.
24.Why are parents helpless
A.Their kids are having little fun. B.They are not good at planning trips.
C.Their kids depend on them too much. D.They are too busy to play with their kids.
25.What does the author think of the money spent by parents
A.It is not worth it. B.It is good for the family.
C.It wouldn't be so much in August. D.It is a waste for those poor at math.
26.Why did the father ask the author's kids whether they were in line
A.He was a polite person. B.He couldn’t find the line.
C.He wanted his kid to cut in line. D.He wanted to teach them a lesson.
27.What would be the best title for the text
A.Behave well, little kids! B.Mind your manners, parents!
C.Make your choices carefully D.Keep away from amusement parks

Our culture sees grief as a disease: a terrifying, sad emotion that needs to be cleaned up and put behind us as soon as possible. We see grief as something to overcome, something to fix, rather than something to care or support. Even our doctors are trained to see grief as a disorder rather than a natural response to deep loss. When the professionals don’t know how to handle grief, the rest of us can hardly be expected to respond with skill and grace.
If we want to care for one another better, we have to redefine grief. We have to talk about it. We have to understand it as a natural, normal process rather than something to be avoided. We have to start talking about the skills needed to face the reality of living a life changed entirely by loss.
There’s no one perfect way to respond to or to support someone you care about but there are some good ground rules.
First, remember that you play a supporting role, not a central role, in your friend’s grief. You may believe you would do things differently if this loss had happened to you. I hope you don’t get the chance to find out. This grief belongs to your friend. Follow their lead.
In fact, one of the best things you can do for a grieving friend is anticipating(预测) his needs. Don’t say, “Call me if there’s anything I can do,” because your friend will not call. Instead, make concrete offers: “I will stop by each morning on my way to work and take the dog for a quick walk.” Then show up and do it. Of course, the real work of grieving is not something you can do for your friend, but you can lessen the burden of everyday life. Assist in small, ordinary ways, such as taking in the mail, or shoveling snow. These tasks are evidence of love.
Above all, show your love. Say something. Do something. Be willing to stand beside the gaping hole that has opened in your friend’s life. Listen. Be there. Love. Love is the only thing that lasts.
28. What is the first paragraph mainly about
A. Grief is a disease. B. How to handle grief.
C. Response to deep loss. D. General views about grief.
29. What is the author’s opinion on grief
A. He believes it can be avoided.
B. He thinks it is a deadly disease.
C. He thinks it is natural and we should face it.
D. He believes that it can be understood only by doctors.
30. What does the underlined word “concrete” in Paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Specific. B. External. C. Financial. D. Complete.
31. What does the author think is the most important when comforting grieving friends
A. Following their lead. B. Showing your love to them.
C. Giving them a lot of money. D. Accompanying them all day long.
D
After eight years of construction, the Padma Multipurpose Bridge in Bangladesh opened to the public on June 26, reducing travel time from parts of the southwest of the country to the capital Dhaka from seven to eight hours to as little as just 10 minutes.
The 21.5-meter-wide, 6.15-kilometer-long bridge built over the Padma River, the main branch of the Ganges, has two levels with the upper tier having a four-lane highway and the lower tier a single-track railway, according to Wuhan-based China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group, or MBEC, one of China’s biggest bridge makers. Before that, travelers and goods were transported via boat or ship because of the vast width and fast-flowing nature of the river, and the tendency of the area to flood.
In 2014, the Bangladeshi government awarded MBEC a $1.54-billion contract to build the core structure of the bridge, making it the country’s largest infrastructure(基础建设) project as well as the largest foreign bridge project undertaken by Chinese companies in terms of total cost.
“The construction was much harder than expected as the complex geological conditions brought multiple challenges to us,” said Shen Tao, deputy(副的) general manager of the project. “The bridge is located above a river with banks on loose soil, and downpours in the rainy season often caused flooding, bringing us numerous difficulties we had never experienced before.” “During the construction, we had to adjust the design plan to adapt to environmental changes whenever necessary,” he added.
“However, through continuous learning and adaptation, construction teams have greatly improved their abilities including technology, communication and adaptability.” said Wen Wusong, chairman of MBEC. “They demonstrated the strength of China’s road bridge construction to the whole world and the bridge is a model of international cooperation.”
Over the past eight years, the project has created over 50,000 jobs for local residents, according to MBEC.
32. What do we know about the bridge
A. It is over the Ganges. B. It is across the Padma River.
C. The upper tier has a single-track railway. D. The lower tier has a four-lane highway.
33. What did Shen Tao mainly express in paragraph 4
A. Costs of building the bridge. B. Features of the newly-built bridge.
C. Benefits the bridge can bring about. D. Difficulties in constructing the bridge.
34. Which can replace the underlined word “demonstrated” in paragraph 5
A. Measured B. Adapted. C. Showed. D. Preserved.
35. What can be the best title for the news report
A. China-made bridge opens in Bangladesh
B. Eight years of China’s constructing a bridge in Bangladesh
C. Constructing a bridge creates over 50,000 jobs in Bangladesh
D. Bangladeshi government awards MBEC $1.54-billion contract

【答案】24.A 25.A 26.C 27.D
Camp’s over. The kids’ friends have left for warmer places. A trip to the pool doesn't bring the same excitement as it did in June. And so many families have no choice but to go for a trip to the amusement park. 故选A。
As soon as you get to the park, you pay a couple of hundred dollars for a family of four. Already, expectations are unrealistic as parents start to do the math. How many rides will I get for the money The answer—at least in August—is four. 故选A。
At Dutch Wonderland last weekend, one father walked up to my kids and asked if they were in line. For five minutes, he had his daughter stand behind them. When I turned my head, he had her stand ahead of them. 27.
C
D 29. C 30. A 31. B

Dear Chris,
How pleased I am to know you will come to China this October. I’m writing to suggest what preparations you can make to make your trip wonderful.
To begin with, it would be nice to read some books on Chinese culture. Besides, it couldn’t be better if you learn to use chopsticks, which makes you feel at ease when enjoying Chinese cuisines. What’s more, it’s good manners to keep smiling and have eye contact when talking to others. If possible, practise some everyday greeting expressions ahead of time, like Nihao. You’ll feel more comfortable during your stay in China.
Hope my proposals could be helpful and wish you all the best.
Yours,
Li Hua
