In July, I took my kids on a holiday to Los Angeles and I felt tired. A few days later, I went to Las Vegas on my business, and I was under a lot of stress. I wondered what my dream was. So I wanted to get away and 16 for a while.
While I was sitting by the window, a(n) 17 suddenly came to me. I'd always wanted to see the Eiffel Tower. Therefore, the idea of a two-week 18 vacation alone was born. It was something I never thought I'd be planning in my life. I had always thought, if it happened, it would be 19 I was retired* and old.
I would lie* if I said I wasn't 20 . I'd driven alone across the US before, from California 21 New Jersey, but travelling to other countries whose languages weren't the same as 22 terrified* me. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to communicate with anyone, especially if I got 23 somewhere.
But I soon realised that if I wanted to follow my dreams, I had to 24 out of my comfortable area. And I 25 realised that if I let worries take control* of me, I'd never get anywhere.
As I searched for other places to visit, I found the best part was the 26 ride to Venice. As I rode on the bus and enjoyed every new thing I saw, I was having the time of my life. And it was nice to see people, 27 or old, riding their bikes to wherever they needed to go. I thought the sights of the city were so wonderful, but 28 people doing their daily things was the best part of my trip.
Some people might say. "It's 29 . It's just Venice. Thousands of people go there every day. They enjoy the sights they like." But it was more than that to me. It was about having a dream and when it was time for it to 30 , not to be afraid, just let it happen. When I did, the result was more than I could have possibly imagined.

What is it in the picture Is it an eggplant In fact it's a tomato, a purple tomato. The special kind of tomato was created by making changes to its DNA. Besides the unusual color, what's really special about the tomato is that it has very high levels of antioxidants*.
Antioxidants are found naturally in plants like blueberries, blackberries and red cabbages. Scientists believe antioxidants may help people fight against some illnesses. But tomatoes naturally only have a small amount of antioxidants in them.
British scientist Cathie Martin has been working on developing purple tomatoes for years. She wanted to see if she could create tomatoes with lots of antioxidants by changing the DNA of a tomato plant.
Dr.Martin added two genes* from a plant called a "snapdragon". Soon her plants were producing small purple tomatoes with lots of antioxidants. Even better, the tomatoes remained fresh almost twice as long as normal tomatoes.
Dr.Martin and some other scientists created a company. The company tested its tomatoes on mice that were likely to get cancer*. The mice who were fed the purple tomatoes lived about 30% longer than the mice who were fed common tomatoes. Though that's good news, tests on mice don't always show what influence* on humans will be like.
In recent years, Dr.Martin and her company have been working to get the agreement to grow and sell the purple tomatoes in the US. On September 7, the US government agreed. Dr.Martin and her company plan to introduce the tomatoes at farmers markets across the US in 2023. They also hope to sell the seeds to people who want to grow their own.

A. They are much bigger. B. They don't go bad easily.
C. They are better for the environment. D. They have a shorter growing season.
41. What can we learn from the fifth paragraph
A.The purple tomatoes are not safe for humans to eat.
B. The mice got cancer after eating the purple tomatoes.
C. The company has decided to do tests on other animals.
D. The influence of the purple tomatoes on humans is not clear.

"Where's Papa going with that ax* " said Fern to her mother as they were laying the table for breakfast.
"He went to the pig house," replied Mrs Arable. "Some pigs were born last night." "I don't see why he needs an ax," continued Fern, who was only eight years old. "Well," said her mother, " one of the pigs is a runt. It's very small and weak, so your father has decided to do away with it."
"Do away with it " shouted Fern." You mean he will kill it Just because it's smaller than the others "
Mrs Arable put a pitcher of cream on the table. "Don't shout, Fern!" she said. "Your father is right. The pig will die anyway."
Fern pushed a chair out of the way and ran outdoors. She caught up with her father. "Please don't kill it!" she cried. "It's unfair."

Mr Arable smiled. "Certainly not," he said, looking down at his daughter with love, " But this is different. A little girl is one thing, while a little runty pig is another."
"I see no difference," replied Fern, still holding on to the ax. "This is the most terrible case of unfairness that I have ever heard."
A strange look came over Mr Arable's face. He seemed almost ready to cry himself.
"All right," he said. "You go back to the house and I will bring the runt when I come back. I'll let you look after the baby pig. Then you'll see what trouble a pig can be."
Half an hour later, Mr Arable returned to the house, carrying a box under his arm.
"Put it on her chair!" said Mrs Arable. Mr Arable set the box down at Fern's place. Fern came slowly down the stairs. Her eyes were red from crying. As she got closer to her chair, the box wobbled*, and there was a scratching noise. Fern looked at her father. Then she opened the box. There, inside, looking up at her, was the newborn pig.
