One day, off the coast of a small Brazilian island, Joao Pereira de Souza headed out fishing. He was disheartened to find that an oil leak had polluted the waters. Staring at the waves with oil, he decided it was not a good day to fish. But walking the beach that day, he found a struggling penguin(企鹅) ,covered in oil and starving. Pereira took the penguin home, gently cleaned it and spent the next week nursing it back to health. He named it Dindim.
Dindim is a Magellanic penguin, a species known for living in the seas of South America. In order to breed(繁殖) ,they must return to Patagonia,8,000 kilometers from Pereira's home. Pereira patiently took Dindim back to the ocean and taught him how to swim again. Soon enough, it was time for Dindim to return to life in the wild. Pereira watched Dindim swim away, believing it would be the last time he saw him.
But the next June, Dindim returned and stayed for a month, walking around the fisherman's house The time to leave arrived, and Pereira thought this surely would be the last time he would see Dindim. Bu 11 months later, the penguin with a long memory returned again
It is a common belief among scientists that animals have short memories. So a couple of them put tracking equipment on Dindim to see if it was indeed the same penguin that returned year after year. To their surprise, but not Pereira's, Dindim returned, year after year, for more than a decade.
Love and nurture create a bond so deep that we can't always explain it. It's just something we feel, something we long to provide. And when we do, it lasts much longer than we ever expected. Pereira and Dindim share a bond that bridges human life and the natural world. Their friendship is the embodiment(化身)of hope

It can be very difficult for people in wheelchairs to move around on beaches. Most beaches don't have ways for disabled visitors to move around easily, or to get in and out of the sea safely.
Seatrac is a system that was designed to solve this problem. Seatrac is basically a chair on a moving ramp (坡道)that can smoothly carry a person down into the sea, where the person can either remain in the chair, enjoying the water or go for a swim. The Seatrac system can help the disabled, older people and pregnant(怀孕的)women.
The chair is operated by remote control. When the person is ready to get out of the water, the Seatrac system brings the chair back to the top of the slope. It's even possible to take a shower in the Seatrac chair after going for a swim.
Seatrac was invented and developed in Greece. The idea for it came when one of the inventors Ignatios Fotiou, was talking with a friend who used a wheelchair. The friend said he enjoyed the sea but didn't like having to be carried into the ocean as if he were “a bag of potatoes”.
Mr Fotiou realized that there must be a way to make it easier for wheelchair users to get into the water. Mr Fotiou worked with his partner and a professor at a Greek university to design the system. A wooden walkway allows wheelchair users to reach the Seatrac. The system is solar-powered. It doesn't require outside power and can continue to run even if the electricity goes out. The Seatrac system can easily be packed up and stored when swimming season ends.
This summer, the Seatrac system is being used at over 220 beaches in Greece, Cyprus, Italy, and Latvia. The Seatrac service in Greece is being offered for free. The Greek government and the EU have helped pay for it, with local cities buying and managing the equipment. Greece's government hopes that Seatrac will help attract more tourists to the country.
28. Who is Seatrac mainly intended for
A. Anyone who has a hard time walking. B. Children who cannot swim very well.
C. Everyone who wants to enjoy the sea. D. Those who are unwilling to walk on beaches.
29. How did the idea of Seatrac come about
A. Ignatios Fotiou was asked to invent it by his friend.
B. Ignatios Fotiou listened to a complaint from a disabled friend.
C. Ignatios Fotiou wanted to have a chair operated by remote control.
D. Ignatios Fotiou himself was troubled by not being able to enjoy the sea.
30. What can we learn about the Seatrac system from the text
A. It offers service for free globally. B. It consumes a lot of electricity.

Reading for pleasure can be an important and enjoyable childhood activity. Unlike listening and spoken language, which develop rapidly and easily in young children, reading is a taught skill and is acquired and developed through specific learning over time. Until now it has been unclear what effect—if any—encouraging children to read from an early age will have on their brain development, cognition(认知)and mental health later in life.
To find out this, researchers from the universities of the UK and China looked at data from the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) groups in the US. Of the 10,243 participants studied, just under a half had little experience of reading for pleasure or did not begin doing so until later in their childhood. The remaining half had spent between three and ten years reading for pleasure.
The team found a strong link between reading for pleasure at an early age and a positive performance in adolescence on cognitive tests that measured such factors as verbal learning, memory and speech development, and at-school academic achievement. These children also had better mental health, when assessed using a number of clinical scores and reports from parents and teachers, showing fewer signs of stress and depression, as well as improved attention and fewer behavioral problems such as aggression and rule-breaking.
Children who began reading for pleasure earlier also tended to spend less screen time—for example, watching TV or using their smartphone or tablet—during the week and at weekends in their adolescence, and also tended to sleep longer.
The best amount of reading for pleasure as a young child was around 12 hours per week. Beyond this, there appeared to be no additional benefits. Instead, there was a gradual decrease in cognition, which the researchers say may be because they are sedentary and spend little time on other activities that could be cognitively improving, including sports and social activities.
32. What did the research focus on
A. The state of children's reading ability. B. The development of reading for pleasure.
C. Effects that early reading has on children. D. Difficulties in listening, speaking and reading.
33. How does children's reading for pleasure at an early age influence them
A. Improve their performance at school. B. Better their mental pressure.
C. Better their observation ability. D. Reduce their screen and sleeping time.
34. What does the underlined word “sedentary” in the last paragraph probably refer to
A. Sitting still for a long time. B. Developing hobbies.
C. Taking physical exercise. D. Participating in community activities.
35. What does the text mainly talk about
A. Benefits of early reading for pleasure. B. Ways for children to master a taught skill.
C. Important and enjoyable childhood activities. D. Cognitive tests measuring academic achievement.

How to Get into a Competitive High School
Similar to admissions at best colleges, getting into a top competitive high school can be difficult. You should have super academic grades, excellent test scores, proof of focus and interest in a special subject, and maturity and intellect shown through interviews and personal essays. 36 . Here are four tips on how to prepare.
Build your academic profile early
The pathway to attending a competitive high school starts with strong performance in middle school. To get into competitive high schools, students always want to take the strictest subjects at your middle school. 37 .They also need to earn top grades in these subjects. The student pretty much has to have straight A's in seventh and eighth grade in order to even think about that level of a school.
38
Selective high schools use a number of standardized tests in admissions decisions, including the SSAT, the High School Placement Test, and the Independent School Entrance Exam. For example, students looking to attend one of the nine specialized high schools in New York City must score highly on the Specialized High School Admissions Test.
Prepare heavily for high school interviews
Grades and test scores are key, but equally important to the admissions process is how students present themselves during interviews, which are often required, especially at private schools. Unlike college admissions, students typically tour a school and interview before applying. 39 .
40
One way students can stand out in essay writing and interviews is to thoroughly research the school. This helps students tailor their essay and interview responses to show their knowledge of the school, and it's also an important piece of judging the school itself.
A. But it's not enough
B. Perform well on standardized tests
C. So students should first prepare for it
D. Be fit for the school's culture and mission
E. Conduct thorough research on high schools
F. It is also necessary to do plenty of research and planning
G. Students are typically good at every part of their performance

Most people have an experience that they will never forget. For pilots Dave McMahon and Sydnie Uemoto, it involved a plane crash, and an ocean, which made them realize the meaning of life and cooperation.
As the twin-engine Piper Apache flew 5,000 feet above the Pacific Ocean, 23-year-old pilot Sydnie Uemoto and her co-pilot, 26-year-old Dave McMahon, heard the strange sound of the engines.
Then, without warning, the pilots lost power to the right engine. A moment later, the left one went.
At about 1,000 feet and falling quickly, Uemoto made their last call. “We're 25 miles northwest of Kona,” she said to air traffic control. “We're going down.”
Then everything flashed white as the plane struck the surface of the ocean. McMahon and Uemoto were thrown forward violently.
“Sydnie, get out !”McMahon called.
As the plane sank, they jumped into the ocean. Within seconds, the plane disappeared beneath the surface.
As the waves broke around them, McMahon and Ulemoto had done the impossible by suriving a crash landing into the ocean. Now they just had to stay put, swimming in the warm sea.
“When will the Coast Guard get here ” Uemoto asked.
“They're coming,” McMahon said.
After a couple of hours, McMahon's prediction seemed to come true. A Navy plane appeared in the sky, circling the area. It flew directly overhead as McMahon waved his life preserver(救生用具) overjoyed at the sight. However, the plane continued on its way without spotting them.
As the sun grew dark, McMahon became scared. He thought they were going to have to spend the night on the water.
“Hey, Dave ” Uemoto said softly at one point.
“Hey, Sydnie,” he called back.
When the sun rose that morning, the two pilots were greeted by a beautiful sight.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

34. A词义猜测题。根据该词后的“spend little time on other activities that could be cognitively improving, including sports and social activities”可知,此处表示孩子们花在其他可以提高认知能力的活动(包括体育和社交活动)上的时间非常少,而惯于久坐不动,故选项A“长时间坐着不动”最符合语境。

The Meaning of a Handwriting Class
A handwriting class will be offered in our school. However, many students t think it's not necessary and will waste our time.
In my opinion, handwriting classes will not only make us experience the long history of Chinese calligraphy culture but also help us improve writing skills. The meaning of handwriting classes is as follows.
First of all, when we learn handwriting, we can better understand the greatness of the Chinese nation and deepen our feelings for our motherland. In addition, handwriting classes can help improve our artistic quality and gain visual and spiritual enjoyment. Last but not least, handwriting classes can cultivate our quality of insistence.
第二节
One possible version:
After almost 20 hours, Uemoto's body finally ran out of power. Then Uemoto heard the sound of he helicopter. “Tt's coming!” she shouted. “This is it, Sydnie,” McMahon said. McMahon and Uemoto waved their hands crazily. To their disappointment, the helicopter flew overhead and then flew away. They had no choice but to hug in the water because of their strong desire to survive. Alone, either of them would have died. However, they believed that if they could help each other in danger and never give up, they would make it. Eyes up, they were looking forward to seeing another helicopter.
A second helicopter(直升机)arrived ten minutes later. Seeing it, Uemoto and McMahon burst into tears, waving their life preservers. After a few moments, a rescuer lowered himself into the ocean, followed by a metal rescue basket that was tied to the helicopter. The rescuer guided Uemoto into the basket and, with a lift, she rose into the air and toward the safety of the helicopter. Then it was McMahon's turn. “This is a story we're going to tell our children and grandchildren,” said Uemoto.
