“What if we treat the ocean as if our lives depend on it Or, what if we don’t ” World-famous
marine biologist Sylvia Earle poses her famous “what if” questions to inspire people to reflect on
how they can help save the ocean. In 1998, Time magazine named Earle its first “Hero for the
Planet.”
Earle’s move to Florida’s west coast at age 12 is what started a lifelong passion. She says,
“That’s where I first fell in love with the ocean.” In 1953, using newly developed equipment, the
young scientist became one of the first in her field to scuba dive Her first long-term
exposure to the ocean depths came in 1970 when she led an all-female research team to study the
ocean. They lived under the sea in a submersible (潜水器) for two weeks. When they returned to the
surface, world-wide cheer and praise were waiting, especially for Dr. Earle.
Sylvia Earle’s career includes many firsts. In 1979 she became the first woman to walk the ocean
floor 381 meters below the surface. In 1990, she became the first female chief scientist of the U.S.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Through the years, Earle has spent roughly 7,500 hours underwater. During that time, she has
become increasingly alarmed by the significant changes she has observed.
The famous scientist fears that the ocean is dying. Climate change, overfishing, the dumping of
trash and chemicals and oil spills are just some of the many causes. In order to tackle the problem,
Earle formed Mission Blue in 2009. This organization promotes the legal protection and
conservation of the world’s oceans. Her plan is to develop “Hope Spots,” protected areas large
enough to reverse (逆转) damage and restore the ocean.
24.Why does Sylvia Earle put forward “what if” questions
A.To call on people to protect the ocean.
B.To stress our dependence on the ocean.
C.To criticize people’s damage to the ocean.
D.To contribute an article to Time magazine.
25.What can we learn about Sylvia Earle

Electronic timing is older than most people imagine and was used for the first time more than a
hundred years ago at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. Initially, the well-known company Ericsson was
tasked with developing the technology, but it was the Swedish inventor Ragnar Carlstedt who
eventually created the final product.
At the same time, Carlstedt introduced another invention: the finish line camera. The
1, 500-meter Olympic final was extremely close with Arnold Jackson from Great Britain winning by
only 0.1 seconds. But it was impossible to decide on the silver medal since the two Americans Abel
Kiviat and Norman Taber finished side by side. For the first time in history, the outcome of an
Olympic event had to be settled based on a photo finish when Kiviat was judged to be “slightly
ahead”.
The significance of these two inventions led a major newspaper to write: “Electronic timing at
the Olympic Games. Simultaneous (同时发生的) timing and photography of contestants. A brilliant
idea!”
The next step in timekeeping was the photo-finish camera with a time stamp imprinted on each
picture, which was introduced at the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles. The 1948 Olympics saw the
introduction of another invention with the continuous slit camera (狭缝摄影机), where a film behind
a narrow slit rolls (滚动 ) with the same speed as the runners. Four years later the clocks were
connected to the slit camera giving a solution of 1/100 s. But it was not until 1972 that official times
were recorded to the 100th of a second.

{#{QQABCYQEoggAAgAAAQgCEwUwCgEQkBAACKoGAFAEsAABgQFABAA=}#}
The next big step in the eighties was to make the camera digital to speed up the feedback (反馈).
But the idea behind the slit camera was kept and is still the basis of all timing systems for athletics
used today. The only difference is that now there is a very narrow sensor array (阵列传感器) instead
of the moving film.
After a century technology has reached the point where the whole timing system can be stored in
a smartphone. So in a way, the circle was closed when SprintTimer, a sports timer and photo finish
app, was developed in the same place and precisely a hundred years after Ragnar Carlstedt.
28.What do we know about electronic timing
A.It was created in recent years.
B.It was first introduced at the Olympics.
C.It was developed by the well-known company Ericsson.
D.It was perfected by the Swedish inventor Ragnar Carlstedt.
29.What does paragraph 2 focus on
A.The increasing need for a finish line camera.
B.The intense competition of the 1,500-meter Olympic final.
C.The significant role of Carlstedt’s another invention.
D.The excellent performance of Arnold Jackson.
30.How was the digital camera in the eighties different from the slit camera
A.It avoided the use of a moving film.
B.It rolled with the same speed as the runners.
C.It made a 100th-of-a-second record possible.
D.It adopted a new idea for all timing systems used today.
31.What does the underlined part “the circle was closed” in the last paragraph mean
A.Further improvement was discontinued.
B.The problem was back to the origin.
C.A new invention was created.
D.The issue was resolved.

An artificial intelligence can decode (解码 ) words and sentences from brain activity with
surprising accuracy. Using only a few seconds of brain activity data, the AI guesses what a person
has heard. It lists the correct answer in its top 10 possibilities, researchers found in a primary study.
Developed at the parent company of Facebook, Meta, the AI could eventually be used to help
thousands of people around the world who are unable to communicate through speech, typing or

gestures.
Most existing technologies to help such patients communicate require risky brain surgeries to
put in electrodes (电极 ). This new approach “could provide a possible path to help patients with
communication problems, avoiding the use of surgeries,” says neuroscientist Jean-Rémi King, a
Meta AI researcher.
King and his colleagues trained a computational tool, also known as a language model, to detect
words and sentences on 56, 000 hours of speech recordings from 53 languages. The team applied an
AI with this language model to databases from four institutions that included brain activity from 169
volunteers. In these databases, participants listened to various stories and sentences, while the
people’s brains were scanned by magnetoencephalography (MEG)(脑磁图).
Then with the help of a computational method that helps account for physical differences among
actual brains, the team tried to decode what participants had heard using just three seconds of brain
activity data from each person. The team instructed the AI to match up the speech sounds from the
story recordings with patterns of brain activity that the AI computed as corresponding to what people
were hearing. It then made predictions about what the person might have been hearing during that
short time, given more than 1, 000 possibilities. Using MEG, the correct answer was in the AI’s top
10 guesses, the researchers found.
“The new study is decoding of speech recognition, not production,” King agrees, “Though
speech production is the final goal, for now, we’re quite a long way away.”
32.What is the main advantage of the new technology
A.Helping doctors perform brain surgeries to put in electrodes.
B.Freeing patients from risky brain operations.
C.Providing a path to communicate with others.
D.Helping patients with communication problems.
33.What does the AI require to make its prediction
A.Top ten guesses.
B.Speech production.
C.Patterns of brain activity.
D.Volunteers with disability.
34.What does Jean-Rémi King think of the new study
A.Disappointing. B.Promising.
C.Surprising. D.Exciting.

Curiosity is rooted in our DNA. We are fascinated by the future; we are impressed with the
unknown that surrounds us; we are amazed at all that we have to explore. The mysteries of the world
have always been a push for us to watch. 36 .
Children are known for sticking their fingers in places where young fingers should never be.
They are famous for putting all kinds of objects and substances in their mouths, everything from
plastic blocks to any object in the room.
37 It holds our hand as we move into old age and the unknown of the future. By and
large, we are determined question-askers. We want to know more than we know; we want to expand
our horizons, try out the new and undiscovered, and pursue experiences that deepen our
comprehension of the world we live in.
38 It is also the generation of possibilities. When we look at the world from multiple
perspectives, we give ourselves permission to examine a wider range of resolutions. We open up our
minds to explore the unexamined and unknown. 39 Ian Leslie explains it this way,
“Curiosity is essential to an exploring mind; it opens our eyes to the new and undiscovered,
encouraging us to seek out new experiences and meet new people.”
Curiosity is the catalyst(催化剂) for questioning, and questioning is what urges us to seek out
the unfamiliar and the unknown. 40 It does not move forward, nor does it have sufficient
power to dig what may lie just below the surface or just slightly out of reach. Curiosity is the fuel
necessary for creativity to prosper and succeed.
A.In adults, curiosity guides us toward a lifetime occupation and to new destinations.
B.So ask questions to which there may be a wide variety of responses.
C.Curiosity becomes a boost for new opportunities and new options.
D.But curiosity is much more than a simple search for answers.
E.Nowhere is this truer than when we watch our children.
F.Without questioning, knowledge becomes inactive.
G.Curiosity has its own reason for existing.

Growing up, I wanted to be just like my mom. She was kind and caring, and always made
people comfortable. For years she was a volunteer in our community. I loved going to the local
nursing home to help with her. However, once I became a teenager, I was too caught up in my
adolescent world to worry about helping others.
One particular summer day when I was twelve, Mom came into my room and told me to get up
and meet her at the car. I had planned to spend the day at the lake with friends. Why did she have to
ruin everything Eventually, I made my way outside with my mother. Angry and Annoyed, I climbed
into the car and shoot the door loudly. I sat in silence, too upset to make a conversation. “Tasha,
would you like to know where we are going ” Mom asked calmly. I remained silently. “Sweetheart,
we are going to a children’s shelter, I have been there before and I think it would benefit you,”she
explained.
I felt a pain slowly form in my stomach. How was I supposed to help there
When we reached the shelter, I was rather surprised. As we approached the front door, wind
bells played a calming tune while trees and blossoms welcomed us. Maybe this wasn’t going to be so
bad.
Mom rang the doorbell. The door flew open and we were led to the front room, where all of the
children were playing. Toys were spread out across the floor. I noticed a baby whose body was
seriously wounded. Most of the children had noticeable physical scars such as cuts, scratches and
bums. What a terrible life they had had before they moved here! My heart sank. As I was looking
around, I felt a gentle pull on my shirt.

All our citizens are looking forward to this special event. First of all, I promise I will, with great passion, try my best to serve our distinguished guests from home and abroad politely. Besides, I have a good understanding of Chinese history and especially traditional culture, which enables me to spread our splendid culture. To sum up, I believe I can be a qualified volunteer. I will try my best if I’m accepted.

I looked down to find a little girl with brown eyes looking at me. She smiled at me, although there were some scars on her little arms. “Hi. I’m Ashley. Do you want to play dolls with me ” she asked. I looked over and saw Mom nodding to me with a smile. I bent toward Ashley and whispered, “Sure. I’d love to.” Her tiny hand reached up and took mine, and we walked toward the doll house. Our time together brought her great joy and fun and she also made my day.
I returned to the shelter with Mom several times. During those visits, some of the children including Ashley shared their troubled pasts with me in great detail. I felt sorry for what had happened to them and treasured the friendship between us. I would like to do everything in my power to help the children there. At the same time, I learned to be grateful for all I had. It was a meaningful time in my young life that I will never forget. It was Mom who taught me the valuable lesson that summer.

根据第一段的“World-famous marine biologist Sylvia Earle poses her famous “what if” questions to inspire people to reflect on how they can help save the ocean.(世界著名的海洋生物学家西尔维娅·厄尔提出了她著名的“如果……会怎么样”问题,以激发人们思考如何帮助拯救海洋。)”可推知,西尔维娅·厄尔会提出“如果……会怎么样”的问题的目的是号召人们保护海洋。故选A。
根据第三段的“In 1990, she became the first female chief scientist of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).(1990年,她成为美国国家海洋和大气管理局第一位女性首席科学家。)”
根据最后一段的“In order to tackle the problem, Earle formed Mission Blue in 2009. This organization promotes the legal protection and conservation of the world’s oceans. Her plan is to develop “Hope Spots,” protected areas large enough to reverse damage and restore the ocean.(为了解决这个问题,厄尔在2009年成立了蓝使命。该组织促进对世界海洋的法律保护和养护。她的计划是开发“Hope Spots”,这是一个足够大的保护区,可以逆转破坏,恢复海洋。)”可推知,最后一段主要讲的是厄尔所做的努力。故选C。
27.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段的“World-famous marine biologist Sylvia Earle poses her famous 'what if' questions to inspire people to reflect on how they can help save the ocean. In 1998, Time magazine named Earle its first'Hero for the Planet.'(世界著名的海洋生物学家西尔维娅·厄尔提出了她著名的“如果……会怎么样”问题,以激发人们思考如何帮助拯救海洋。1998年,《时代》杂志将厄尔评为第一个“地球英雄”。)”可知,本文主要讲的是世界著名的海洋生物学家西尔维娅·厄尔为了拯救海洋所做出的一些努力,因此本文恰当的题目是D选项“Dr. Sylvia Earle—Pioneer of the Deep(西尔维娅·厄尔博士,深海的先锋)”。

根据第一段中“Electronic timing is older than most people imagine and was used for the first time more than a hundred years ago at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. (电子计时的历史比大多数人想象的要久远,100多年前,1912年斯德哥尔摩奥运会首次使用电子计时。)”可知,100多年前,1912年斯德哥尔摩奥运会首次使用电子计时。B选项“It was first introduced at the Olympics.(它最初是在奥运会上引入的。)”
根据第二段中“At the same time, Carlstedt introduced another invention: the finish line camera. (与此同时,卡尔施泰特介绍了另一项发明:终点线摄像机。)”以及“For the first time in history, the outcome of an Olympic event had to be settled based on a photo finish when Kiviat was judged to be “slightly ahead”.(这是历史上第一次,奥运会比赛的结果必须根据照片来决定,当时基维亚特被判“略微领先”。)”
根据第四段中“The 1948 Olympics saw the introduction of another invention with the continuous slit camera , where a film behind a narrow slit rolls ( 滚 动) with the same speed as the runners.(1948年奥运会推出了另一项发明,即连续狭缝相机,在窄缝后面的胶卷以与运动员相同的速度滚动。)”以及倒数第二段中“The next big step in the eighties was to make the camera digital to speed up the feedback . (80年代的下一个重大进展是使相机数字化,以加快反馈。)”以及本段中“But the idea behind the slit camera was kept and is still the basis of all timing systems for athletics used today. The only difference is that now there is a very narrow sensor array instead of the moving film. (但是狭缝相机背后的想法被保留下来,并且仍然是今天用于田径计时系统的基础。唯一的区别是现在使用了非常窄的传感器阵列,而不是移动的胶片。)”可知,狭缝摄影机和数码相机的区别在于,狭缝摄影机是胶卷以与运动员相同的速度滚动进行拍摄,而数码相机不是移动的胶片而是使用了非常窄的传感器阵列。故选A。
根据划线词前面的句子“After a century technology has reached the point where the whole timing system can be stored in a smartphone.(一个世纪后,技术已经达到了整个计时系统可以存储在智能手机中的地步。)”可知,一个世纪后,整个计时系统存储在了智能手机中,根据划线词后文的内容“ when SprintTimer, a sports timer and photo finish app, was developed in the same place and precisely a hundred years after Ragnar Carlstedt.( 当时SprintTimer,一个运动计时器和照片整理应用程序,在同一个地方被开发出来,正好是Ragnar Carlstedt100年后。)”

根据第五段中的“The team instructed the AI to match up the speech sounds from the story recordings with patterns of brain activity that the AI computed as corresponding to what people were hearing. It then made predictions about what the person might have been hearing during that short time, given more than 1, 000 possibilities.(该团队指示人工智能将故事录音中的语音与人工智能计算出的与人们听到的内容相对应的大脑活动模式相匹配。然后,它根据1000多种可能性,对这个人在短时间内可能听到的内容做出预测。)”可知,人工智能需要运用大脑活动模式做出预测。故选C。
34.推理判断题。根据最后一段的““The new study is decoding of speech recognition, not production,” King agrees, “Though speech production is the final goal, for now, we’re quite a long way away.”(“新的研究是解码语音识别,而不是产生,”King同意,“虽然语音产生是最终目标,但目前,我们还有很长的路要走。”)”
通读全文,尤其是第一段的“An artificial intelligence can decode (解码) words and sentences from brain activity with surprising accuracy. Using only a few seconds of brain activity data, the AI guesses what a person has heard.(人工智能可以以惊人的准确度从大脑活动中解码单词和句子。只需要几秒钟的大脑活动数据,人工智能就能猜测出一个人听到了什么。)”和第二段的“Developed at the parent company of Facebook, Meta, the AI could eventually be used to help thousands of people around the world who are unable to communicate through speech, typing or gestures.(这款人工智能由Facebook的母公司Meta开发,最终可用于帮助全球成千上万无法通过语音、打字或手势进行交流的人。)”

首句“Curiosity is rooted in our DNA.(好奇心根植于我们的DNA中。)” C“Nowhere is this truer than when we watch our children.(没有什么比我们看着自己的孩子更真实的了。)”
根据后文“It holds our hand as we move into old age and the unknown of the future.(它牵着我们的手,让我们步入老年,走向未知的未来。)” G“In adults, curiosity guides us toward a lifetime occupation and to new destinations.(对于成年人来说,好奇心引导我们走向一生的职业和新的目的地。)” 故选A项。
38.分析该段内容可知,设空后文“It is also the generation of possibilities.(它也是各种可能性的产生。)” D“But curiosity is much more than a simple search for answers.(但好奇心远不止是简单地寻找答案。)”中“search for answers”呼应上一段的“question-askers”,同时使用“much more than”使话题顺利过渡到该段,前后逻辑衔接紧密。故选D项。
39.分析可知,后文“Ian Leslie explains it this way(伊恩·莱斯利这样解释)”中的“it”应是指代设空句,而后文“Curiosity is essential to an exploring mind; it opens our eyes to the new and undiscovered, encouraging us to seek out new experiences and meet new people.(好奇心对于探索的头脑来说是必不可少的;它让我们看到新的和未被发现的事物,鼓励我们寻找新的经验,结识新的人。)” 选项“Curiosity becomes a boost for new opportunities and new options.(好奇心成为新机会和新选择的动力。)”
40.根据前文“Curiosity is the catalyst for questioning, and questioning is what urges us to seek out the unfamiliar and the unknown.(好奇心是质疑的催化剂,而质疑是促使我们去寻找不熟悉和未知的东西。)”
