Unit4阅读教学设计
I. The analysis of teaching material
This lesson is the first period of Unit 4 in New Senior English for China Students’ Book 3. With the help of this passage, students will have a better understanding of the topic “Humankind and Nature”. This lesson contains four parts: Warming Up, Pre-reading ,Reading and Post-reading. The passage is a brief introduction on how the universe developed and the development of life on the earth. It provides a scientific background to any investigation into space. This lesson will develop students’ Core Competencies well, which aims at improving their language ability, learning ability, thinking quality and cultural character.
II. The analysis of students
There are 56 students in class 8, Grade 1. 41 students are from countryside. The rest are from the county. Some of them are weak in learning English. Students are curious about the development of the earth and life. But it’s a bit hard for them to understand the passage. In this lesson, I will guide students to finish several tasks, which can help them have a better understanding of this passage. At the same time, I will try my best to activate students’ interest in learning about this topic.
III. Teaching goals
Language goals:(1)Students can read and understand the following words: astronomy, system, religion, theory, atom, billion, globe, violent, carbon, dioxide, atmosphere, unlike, fundamental, harmful, acid, chain, multiply, oxygen, exist, thus, puzzle.(2)Students can understand and use the following key expressions: in time, lay eggs, give birth to, in one’s turn, prevent...from, be fundamental to.2.Ability goals:(1)Students can read the dialogue and understand its meaning by finishing 3 reading tasks.(2)Students can retell the development of earth and life according to pictures.3.Moral goals:(1)Students can have more interest in learning about astronomy: the science of stars.(2)Students can realize the importance of protecting the earth and take some actions to solve the problem.
IV. Teaching important points
Guide students to understand the dialogue by finishing 4 reading tasks.
2. Guide students to find out and understand key words and expressions in the passage.
V. Teaching difficult points
Guide students to retell the development of earth and life.
2. Guide students to talk about the ways of protecting the earth.

VIII. Teaching proceduresStep1 Warming up
Use the APP of Google Earth to show students maps and ask students some questions about the maps.a. Where are we now b. Where is the classroom c. Where is the school building d. 2.Divide the students into 8 groups and send out the eight balloons, each one stands for one planet. Turn off the lights and play a short video about starry sky. Ask students to experience the beauty of universe.3.Show students the learning aims of this class.【Intentions of design】
1.Raise students’ interest in astronomy.2.Guide students to experience the beauty of universe and have a better understanding of it.3.Improve students’ learning efficiency by making the learning aims clear.
Step 2 Pre-reading
1.Show students some pictures and guide students to talk about how life began on earth according to different religions and cultures.
2.Play a short video and ask students to have a general understanding of the development of earth and life.

Step 4 Post-reading
[Task4] Retelling
Guide students to retell the passage according to the pictures.
[Task5] Discussion
Show students some pictures about environment pollution. Then play a song and guide students to listen and then discuss the following questions.
①What problem is caused by human being
②What can we do to help solve the problem
【Intentions of design】
1.Help students understand the passage better and encourage students to speak English more. 2.Improve students’ oral English by talking about the questions. 3.Awake students’ awareness of protecting the environment and think about ways to protect our earth.
Step5 Summary
1. Guide students to sum up what they’ve learned in this class.
2. Play the song Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and cheer up students.

Develop students’ learning ability and help them form good habits of learning English.
IX. Homework
1. Read the passage more after class.
2. Write a composition about how to stop global warming.
3. Make a poster about protecting the earth with your group members.
(Intentions of design: Help students have a better understanding of this passage, develop students’ writing skills and encourage students to use English to do things. In this way, students will be more confident in learning English. They will also take some actions to protect the earth in their daily life.)
X. Teaching reflection
Advantages
1. Students can take actively part in class activities. They can finish tasks by themselves or in small groups. 2. Students can read the passage for information in different ways. 3. Students can be touched by the Earth Song, and think about some ways to protect our earth.
Disadvantages
1.Some students finished task 5 in Chinese. 2.Some students felt shy when they retell the passage. 3.Some students have few chances to practice their speaking English because of some very active students in their groups.
Improvement plan
1.I should encourage students to speak English and not to be afraid of making mistakes or losing face in English class. 2.I should pay more attention to group activities and try to give more chances for those less active students.
