When Matty Sallin, 24, was studying at university, he got an interesting task for the final exam: create something for the common family. He decided to create an alarm clock.
“To get up in time, many people have to use an alarm clock every morning. But the sound of the clock is so noisy and unpleasing,” he says. So before he started to design the new clock, he asked different people what they’d like to wake up to in the morning. A lot of them said, “The smell of bacon (培根).”
So Sallin and his two classmates invented a new kind of alarm clock: a wooden box with a pig face and a digital clock that uses the smell of cooking bacon to wake people up. He explains, “There’s no danger of burning, because I built it carefully. It uses special light bulbs (灯泡) instead of a fire for cooking and turns off by itself after ten minutes.”
“What you do is to put a few pieces of bacon meat inside the box the night before, then you set the alarm,” says Sallin. “If you set the alarm for 8:00, it will turn on at 7:50 and slow cook for ten minutes under the bulbs. Then the bulbs turn off and a fan blows the smell out through the nose of the pig.”
“So the enjoyable smell of bacon will wake you up. There will be no more noisy alarms,” says Sallin. “Then you can open the door on the side and pull the bacon out and eat it.”

Language study strengthens students’ minds. Many studies have suggested that multilingual people, people who speak more than one language, are better at certain tasks. Specifically, multilingual people have better executive function (执行力) than people who speak only one language. Researchers have guessed that this advantage exists because multilingual people must continually decide which words from which language to use. As a result, multilingual people get lots of practice with executive function. Their brains can then use those skills to complete other tasks, like paying attention or multitasking. This effect is especially strong for people who grow up speaking more than one language. The earlier students start language classes, the more benefits they may get from language study.
Moreover, language study helps prepare students for their future careers. Today, language skills are required on the job market and more and more businesses at work in many countries across the world. As businesses become worldwide, they need people who can communicate easily across national borders（边界）. To prepare for their careers, more students should be learning foreign languages. From 2010 to 2015, the need in the United States for workers who speak a second language doubled. This trend （趋势）included workers of all skill levels and backgrounds.
Of course, in order to make better use of the advantages of foreign language study, middle school foreign language classes should not just make students memorize new words and sounds. They must also teach students about new cultures. It is well-known that in some cultures, hand and arm movements have played a big role in communication. However, if not read correctly, gestures can be dangerous just as much as they can help with communication. A very positive gesture in one culture may have a completely different meaning in other cultures.
The Seashell
This gesture is made by bringing the fingertips of your hand all close together, moving your hand up and down. Your hand almost looks like a seashell.
Italians use this a lot, even if they are on the phone, to mean a lot of
things, like “What do you want ” or “What are you saying ”. Though it is negative for Italians, this gesture is actually used with a positive meaning in Turkey, where it tells that something or someone is beautiful.
The Okay Sign
This sign is known all over the world. It is made of two fingers touching each other to form a circle and your other three fingers pointing
straight up in the air.
In most Western countries, this gesture is very positive and means “All is good/okay”. It can also be used as a question to ask “Is everything okay ”. Besides, the gesture can mean the number zero in France. When used in the Middle East, it has a very negative meaning, as it means the eye of bad people.
The Finger Snap（弹响指）
This gesture is made by putting your middle finger on your thumb with your index finger（食指） pointing up and your ring and little fingers resting on the inside part of your hand. The movement results in a snapping sound.
What is very interesting about this gesture is that it can have different meanings depending on the situation it is used in. Making a finger snap is a way of attracting someone’s attention, maybe because you have an excellent idea. However, in some other situations, this gesture can be very rude, for example, if you use it to call someone’s attention, like calling for a waiter.
