A young woman sits down at the piano. Her long flowing brown hair frames a friendly face. And then she begins to sing. Her unexpectedly mature voice attracted everyone in the room. This is Norah Jones, award-winning singer and songwriter.
Norah Jones was born on March 30, 1979, in New York City. She is the daughter of the legendary Rxdyi Shankar, a very famous guitar player; but Norah was brought up entirely by her mother Sue. At 4 years old, she and her mother moved to the Dallas suburb, Texas. Her earliest musical influence came from her mother’s extensive LP collection. She began singing in church choirs at age five, took piano lessons two years later, and briefly played alto saxophone in junior high.
In the course of serving customers and laying tables in a fast restaurant, Jones soon started a band in which she was a lead singer, of course, and played piano as well. In October 2000, the band ambitiously brought a demo to EMI Blue Note Records.
At a meeting with Blue Note president Bruce in the following year, Jones played her three-song tape, hoping to earn a break. Bruce was so impressed with this young girl’s talents that he signed her on the spot. After a year of work, Norah Jones released her debut album, Come Away with Me. Norah Jones has already sold 2.6 million copies of the album, which is 10 times more than any album in Blue Note history. Despite the lack of advertisement, her album was inching its way up the music charts while the debut single Don’t Know Why was climbing up the Adult Top 40 Chart.
The singer already enjoyed a success at the Grammy Awards in 2003, where she picked up five trophies in the major categories (Album of the Year, Record of the Year Trophy for Don’t Know Why, Best New Artist, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for Don’t Know Why, and Best Pop Vocal Album). It’s clear that this was only the beginning for Miss Jones.
24. What motivated Jones’ interest in music when young
A. Her childhood experience. B. Her mother’s preference in music.
C. Her participation in church choirs. D. Her mother’s extensive LP collection.
25. What did Jones do before being signed by EMI Blue Note Records
A. Work as a waitress. B. Study in a high school.
C. Play the piano for customers. D. Compose songs for a band.
26. When did Jones release her debut album
A. In 2000. B. In 2001. C. In 2002. D. In 2003.
27. What can we know about her debut single Don’t Know Why
A. It was composed by Jones.
B. It sold well through advertisement.
C. It hit the top in the Adult Top 40 Chart.
D. It won several awards in the Grammy Awards in 2003.

Wildlife experts are reporting increasing numbers of Atlantic blue fin tuna (蓝鳍金枪鱼) in the Atlantic Ocean. Atlantic blue fins are highly prized by the fishing industry. The fish can weigh up to 454 kilograms. Its meat is often used in sushi products sold at Japanese restaurants.
But the Atlantic blue fin has been a concern for wildlife experts. The species was listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
Improved law enforcement appears to be helping the Atlantic blue fin recover after years of overfishing. The popular fish all but disappeared from the Gulf of Maine about 10 years ago. This year, fishers set a record by catching 30 Atlantic blue fins. One of the fish weighed 363 kilograms.
International regulators have eased the catch limits for U. S. fishermen this year, increasing the quotas (限额) by more than 180,000 kilograms. But environmental groups warn increasing the new limits will undo years of wildlife protection efforts.
Scientists have been unable to determine whether or not the Atlantic blue fin population has recovered, so any decrease in the population now is bad for fishermen in the long term.
Blue fin has been at the center of a long battle between the fishing industry and environmentalists. Fishermen can make large amounts of money from a single fish. Environmentalists seek to protect the Atlantic blue fin. Yet many consumers are willing to pay high prices to eat them.
Walt Golet, a professor of marine biology at the University of Maine, says “Probably no other fish has been more politicized than the Atlantic blue fin tuna. From an environmental point of view it’s always … Let’s try to back off a little bit and make sure that we always have enough fish, and on the other side, we have individuals and organizations that they’re making a living out of that fish and that’s kind of where the assessment and management come into play. It’s kind of balancing all of those opinions and viewpoints.”
28. What do we know about the Atlantic blue fin
A. It is a treasure in fishing industry. B. Its meat is sold well in Japan.
C. It is an endangered species. D. It has recovered after 10 years of overfishing.
29. What does the underlined word “undo” in Paragraph 4 mean
A. Ban. B. Ruin. C. Undertake. D. Disapprove.
30. What do environmentalists think of the new catch limits
A. Helpful. B. Hopeless. C. Successful. D. Unfavorable.
31. Which of the following statements best matches Walt Colant’s point
A. The environmental point of view should be respected.
B. The battle between experts and fishermen will last forever.
C. The balance between all those opinions should be achieved.
D. Individuals and organizations have the right to catch fish.
D
It’s no surprise that stress and anxiety are often viewed in a negative light, but Lisa Damour, a private-practice psychologist, suggests they’re not always bad for us. She claims that a little bit of both can help build mental resilience (适应力) and these experiences can sometimes benefit us.
Damour explained how stress often occurs when people operate at the edge of their abilities — when they push themselves or are forced by situations to stretch beyond their familiar limits. This can result from both bad and good events, she said. For instance, being fired is stressful, but so is bringing a baby home for the first time. She described how stress is unavoidable in daily life and that medium levels of stress “can have an inoculating function”, which can lead to “higher than average resilience” when we face new difficulties.
“Anxiety gets an unnecessarily bad comment, she said,” Anxiety is an alarm system inside the body, likely handed down by evolution, which informs us of threats from both outside, such as a driver turning aside suddenly, and inside, such as when we’ve wasted too much time and it’s time to get started on a task.”
Viewing anxiety as sometimes helpful or even protective allows people to make good use of it, suggests Damour. For example, she often tells the teenagers she works with in her practice to pay attention if they start to feel anxious at a party because their nerves may be warning them of a problem.
32. When do people feel stressed according to Damour
A. They have much work to do.
B. They lose their favorite things.
C. They deal with different situations.
D. They’re engaged in doing unfamiliar things.
33. What does the underlined word “inoculating” probably mean in paragraph 2
A. Unexpected. B. Unbearable. C. Positive. D. Determining.
34. What’s the purpose of paragraph 3
A. To explain the reason for being anxious.
B. To demonstrate the benefits of anxiety.
C. To state the risk of being anxious.
D. To present the solution to anxiety.
35. What does the text mainly talk about
A. Stress and anxiety aren’t always bad.
B. Stress and anxiety are part of our lives.
C. We should focus on positive things in life.
D. We should deal with stress and anxiety carefully.

根据短文内容,从短文中的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Anyone can book a trip, but not everyone can plan the best adventure that is affordable and fun. If you want to do it better, the places to stay in for the nights must be chosen carefully. 36
Check distances on a map. It’s common for hotels to slightly exaggerate (夸大) their closeness to attractions around town. They will not tell you the true distance. If being close to a particular airport is important for your trip, you’d better confirm the distance on Google Map before you book a hotel.
37 A little niceness goes a long way, especially with the hotel staff who have to deal with difficult guests on a regular basis. When you check in, simply say hello to the cleaning staff when you pass them in the hall. This is not only common politeness, but it also increases your chances of getting incidental benefit during your stay.
Give up the package deals (套餐) To appeal to new guests, some hotels will offer themed package deals. 38 Sometimes these packages include things you don’t want or need and the special prices could be higher than the regular ones.
Ask about parking. 39 You’d better look for a hotel offering free parking. If you have to afford the expensive parking, apps like Best Parking can help you find nearby parking lots at lower prices. As parking costs really go up, if not necessary, we suggest you take a taxi or a bus from the hotel to travel around the city rather than travel in your own car. 40
A. Be polite to the staff.
B. Pay attention to difficult guests.
C. They are quite cheap but taste bad.

E. In a self-driving travel, parking may cost a lot.

Dear Fellow Students,
These days has witnessed the scattered plates with plenty of leftovers in our school canteen, causing a huge waste of food. It seems a shame to waste such good food. In order to avoid wasting grain, I appeal to all of you to take some measures at once.
First of all, don’t order too much food. Try to eat up all the dishes that you’ve ordered. Besides, pack the leftovers and bring them back home, if you can’t eat them up. In addition, I strongly advocate that we should launch a campaign — Clearing Plates in our school, which will arouse our awareness of treasuring grain and fighting against wasting food.
I hope all of you will join in and do your bits for saving food. Let’s join our hands and take action from now on!
