Unit3 Celebrations
Lesson3 Memories of Christmas
Honourable judges and dear fellow teachers,
Good morning! It’s my great honor to share with you my teaching design.I am No 5. Today my topic is Memories of Christmas.I will present my ideas in the following six aspects:Analysis of Teaching Material,Analysis of Students, Teaching Objectives,Teaching Important and Difficult points,Teaching and Learning Methods, Teaching procedures.
First-Analysis of Teaching Material
The content of my teaching is reading lesson in Required Course 1 Unit 3 lesson 3-Memories of Christmas..The unit includes the following parts.
Topic Talk listening Chinese traditional festivals:The Mid-Autumn Festival-prepare for Jenny’s birthday party
Lesson 1 reading different ways of celebrating Spring Festival of three persons
Lesson 2 listening matters and attention of joining in English parties
Lesson 3 reading the last Christmas between the author and her grandmother
Writing Workshop writing the scene of my grandfather’s 70th birthday
Viewing Workshop video and reading the history of Chinese traditional paper-cutting
Reading Club 1 supplementary reading the traditional food of Spring Festival
Reading Club 2 the birthday gift of Alice’s Adventures
（Every lesson adopts different forms to develop language input and output.）
Topic Talk is about the Chinese and Western celebration activities;
Lesson1,Viewing Workshop and Reading Club 1 are about our Chinese celebration activities and traditional culture;
Lesson2,Lesson3 and Reading Club2 are about the Western celebration activities and festivals. All of these are students’ input. The last Writing Workshop is our students’ output.
(Design Idea:It is to help students know the difference and similarity of Chinese and Western celebration methods,and make our students learn to use English to introduce Chinese traditional culture and festivals.Through this,Ss can enhance their cultural confidence and raise their awareness of spreading Chinese culture.)
Memories of Christmas will be learned from the three parts-2W 1H:
What-the last Christmas;miss her Granny
Why-①compare-differences& similarity;
②establish common cultural value
How- It is a narrative passage and told by the first person according to time order,in order to make Ss know the scene description.
(The lesson aims at freshmen of senior high school.Our most students can1-2-3;But a few students can 1-2-)
Second-Analysis of Students
Our Ss are the Freshmen of senior high school.Most of Ss can actively respond to the teacher,acquire new words,enhance their ability of reading and writing ,and present their opinions actively.However, there are only a few Ss who can grasp the scene descriptions, and get culture differences exactly thoroughly.
(Based on the Ss’ situation,I need to develop the four-dimension objectives.It includes language ability,learning ability,thinking quality,and cultural consciousness.The former objectives are also our important points.The difficult point is that our Ss know how to compare the two important festivals.)
Third-Teaching Objectives include four parts.
First:language ability-Conclude the structure of the text to learn about the activities in Christmas happened in different time periods;
Second:learning ability-Analyze the hidden feeling changes of the author;
Third:thinking quality-Appreciate and infer from the scene descriptions;
Fourth:cultural consciousness-Compare the two important festivals- Spring Festival and Christmas;
(Based on the above requirements,I will adopt the following teaching and learning methods.They will be used to the next teaching activities.)
Fifth-Teaching and Learning Methods
Teaching Methods
I adopt Task-based Teaching,Situational Teaching,and Communicative teaching approach.
（二）Learning Methods
I adopt Cooperative study method,Individual learning method and Group learning method.
(Now the main part of my lesson is teaching procedures.It includes five parts:Part1-Activate and Share,Part2-Read and Explore,Part 3-Think and Share,Part 4-Homework.)
Activate&share-(Before starting the new lesson,I will ask Ss. some questions and show them a short video about Christmas)It aims to lead in the topic,.....
Read&explore-(Knowing the Christmas, we can develop Read and Explore, It includes 4 activities.Activity 1 is read and find the order of the passage.In para.1.....It is realted to lesson 1-Spring Festival.It aims to... ,which is our important points.)
Activity 2-(Knowing the time order,we can list the Christmas activities according to it,which shows the objective-learning ability.Through the activity,Ss can know the important point.And Ss can compare....)
(Ss know the basic timeline,now Activity3-infer the author’s feeling in different time.Ss can find it through scene description.For example:From the sentence,we can see students is very happy,excited and cheerful.However,her grandmother maybe a little lonely. This may lay the groundwork for the following text-Granny passed away. Then a few weeks after Christmas, the author felt sad and regretful.What made her sad was that her grandmother had passed away. But what made her regretful was that she didn’t know her grandmother was in poor condition during that Christmas.
The activity aims to make Ss infer the true meaning of words through the scene description.It is related to the reading comprehension of College Entrance Examination.Meanwhile,Knowing how to appreciate Christmas is also one of the important points.)
(Now that Activity1 shows the time order,activity2 shows the different feelings,activity 3 shows the scene description.With the help of the above activities,Ss can try to retell the text from the timeline,activities line,and feelings line. The activity 4 integrates the above 3 activities,and adopts the cooperative learning method.)
(Through reading and exploring the text,now we can develop group work,which adopts situational teaching method.
Today is November,and Christmas is approaching.But the foreign COVID-19 becomes severe.Foreign students in our school cannot go home. To make them enjoy a wonderful festival,we plan an activity to celebrate Christmas in our school.There is an activity arranged by our class.
Activity 1-we discuss Spring Festival with our foreign students.
Activity 2-we together discuss how they celebrate Christmas in their country.
The small activity theatre shows the cultural consciousness objective,which is also the most difficult point.)
Through the above group work,Ss can understand the common meaning behind these activities. It is family reunion,shows love,conveys the expectations and hopes to the future,and every person inherit and carry forward their national traditional cultures.
Just as the saying goes,”The first snow and hot coffee, the elk and Christmas tree, the New Year's bell and the countdown, all good things will meet today.(初雪和热咖啡，麋鹿和圣诞树，新年的钟声和倒数计时，所有的美好都会在今天相遇。)
Wish things will be fresh like new day, and life will be happy forever like new year.”(愿得长如此，年年物候新!)
It aims to establish the cultural confidence and show the common emotional and cultural value through comparing the Chinese and Western festivals.
Based on the above learning,I will develop two kinds of pulsory homework is .....and optional homework.....It aims to develop language output according to what we have learned, and prepare for the next writing workshop. Optional homework aims to help Ss. practice their oral English and cultivate Ss’ all-around development.
To develop their logical skills,I make this kind of blackboard design.The mind map can show the development of the story, clearly tell us the important and difficult points and cultivate Ss’ logical ability.
Sixth-Teaching Procedures include five parts.
Activities Intentions
Part1-Activate and Share
Ask Ask some questions to lead in the topic Lead in the topic ; arouse students’ interest; prepare for the next activities
Video Show students a short video about Christmas
Part2-Read and Explore
Activity 1 Read the story quickly and find the order of this story. Conclude the structure of the text and review the previous passage
Activity 2 Work in pair: find activities in Christmas. Transfer knowledge in the new context to compare the two festivals and develop students’ cooperative ability
Activity 3 ①infer the author’s feeling in different time Appreciate the scene description and infer the author’s meaning behind the words（the question pattern is related to the readign comprehension of CEE.
②Find some scene descriptions showing granny’s poor condition. Know more the meaning behind the words and prepare for the next questions through appreciating the scene description.
Activity 4 Retell the text from the next aspects Students can Integrate the above activities and develop the following output activities.
Part 3-Think and Share
Group Discussion 1 What is your memory of Spring Festival Students compare the difference between Chinese and Western culture, and cultivate the cultural confidence,which shows the common emotion and cultural value
Group Discussion 2 Compare the Spring Festival and Christmas from different aspects.

Part4-Homework
Compulsory Write a composition to share your memories of the Spring Festival according to the timeline. Language output and prepare for the next writing
Optional Do daily report about introducing Christmas activities activities in our class.
Part5-Blackboard Design
Blackboard Design Mind map Mind map shows the Show important and difficult points and integrate the passage structure
Conclusion:
In conclusion,I integrate the content of Lesson1 and Writing Workshop, and show the big-unit teaching.
Through knowing more about Christmas,We can see Wherever you are,home is in your heart.
What we eat isn’t the most important thing. But what’s important is who we eat with.
