Ⅱ. Analysis of Teaching Material
Analysis of this Unit The teaching material is taken from the first book of Grade 8, PEP, Go for it! Unit 6 I’m going to study computer science, Section B (2a--2b). The topic of this Unit is about life goals, the functions are talking about future intentions, and the structures are about future by using “ be going to” and “ want to be”. Analysis of the reading material The theme of this period is about human and oneself. It is a reading text which deals with resolutions. After learning this lesson, students will understand the meaning, kinds, and features of resolutions. What’s more, they will learn how to make reasonable resolutions and keep them to become a better person.
Ⅲ. Analysis of Students
Students in Grade 8 have learned English for several years and most of them have mastered the basic ways of leaning English. Before learning this period, students have learned some words of jobs, can talk about dream jobs, future plans, and New Year’s resolutions by using “be going to” and “ want to be”, so the topic of this reading passage is familiar to students. However, they may have difficulty in better understanding a passage. Their reading skills and logical thinking capacity need to be improved as well. Therefore, some useful tips of reading will be given to students to help them understand the passage better. Some pictures and videos will be also used to arouse students’ interest in learning.
Ⅳ. Teaching Objectives
Language competence Students can master the important words and phrases: promise, improve, meaning, physical, hobby, schoolwork,at the beginning of, write down, have to do with, take up. Students can understand the reading text and develop their reading abilities.
Learningcompetence Students’ reading skills can be improved by reading in different ways and using some useful reading tips. Can get the main idea of each paragraph. ②Can choose the appropriate sentence according to the context; ③Learn how to summarize with a mind map.
Thinking quality Students can make reasonable resolutions and strengthen their awareness of achieving goals.
Cultural awareness Lead students to form a positive attitude to achieve their goals. For example, they can learn to make proper resolutions and try their best to keep them. Besides, they should be aware of the importance of trying hard to be a man who can stick to their goals.
Ⅴ. Teaching key points and difficulties
Key points Students can master the key words , phrases and understand the passage. Students can improve their reading skills, like getting the main information and details quickly by using some useful tips.
Difficult points Students can analyse the reasons why resolutions are difficult to keep and try to make reasonable resolutions. Students can apply the reading strategies.

Ⅵ. Teaching procedures
Procedures Activities Design purpose
Step 1 Lead-in 1. Greeting. 2. Watch a video let students watch a video about the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, and then talk about something about Quan Hongchan. To arouse students’ interest in the class and introduce the topic.
Step 2 Pre-reading Watch a video about three students’ resolutions. Think and share What is your resolution Students can talk about their resolutions by using the following sentence structures. ①I am goingto...... ②I want / plan /expect to...... To review some of the sentence structures they are familiar with and promote students to predict the main content of the passage.
Step 3 While-reading Skimming Read the passage aloud and match the paragraph with its main purpose. (A reading tip will be given before letting students do this exercise) The reading tip: Pay attention to the first or the last sentences in each paragraph. Help students to have a clear mind of the passageand understandthe importance of topic sentences.
Scanning ①Read the passage silently and put the sentences (A-D) in the correct places. The reading tips: Find out the key words; Read sentences before and after it. ②Check the answers, then analyse and conclude the reading tips one paragraph by one paragraph. Help students to integrate some key information logically and pave the way for the deep thinking.
Careful reading ①Read paragraph 1 together and answer 4 questions. What is a resolution When do people make them Why do people make them How can people remember them ②Listen to paragraph 2 and finish tasks. Answer questions. How many resolutions are mentioned What are they Classify different resolutions into three kinds. (physical health; self-improvement; better planning) Read paragraph 3and discuss : What do most resolutions have in common (They are too difficult to keep; people just forget about them) To help students to get the detailed information efficiently by using useful methods and try to improve the reading abilities.
Step 4 Post-reading Finish a mind map Retell the passage by filling blanks.. Emotional education Make your smart resolutions and make yourself better and better. (actions, good ways, strong will, keep trying......) To form a general understanding of the whole passage and finish the emotional education.
Step 5 Summary Guide students to summarize the passageby looking at the key information on the blackboard. Help students to rethink what they have learned in this class.
Step 6 Homework Basic task Retell the passage Extended task Try to write down 3 plans for the coming 2024. Students can consolidate and apply the knowledge they have learned.
