Knowledge objective
By the end of this lesson, the students are able to
1. Use the new words and expressions to describe the sequences of events.
2. Learn to use the past continuous tense with “when” and “while”.
Ability objective
1. Predict the main idea according to the pictures and title.
2. Retell the story according to the sequences of the story.
3. Train the students some reading strategies and skills through different tasks
Moral Objective
1. Get students to know the importance of life safety.
2. Educate students to stay calm in accidents and smile to life.
Key and difficult points
1. Learn to describe an event and share what they have learn from the event

Leading-in 1. Read the picture and guess what happened to the person ---He broke his arm when he was playing basketball last year. 2. Ask the students the question: Was he happy or unhappy ---Unhappy (After learning this topic, you may have a different answer.) 1.Catch the students’ attention and lead in the topic of this lesson. 2. Make the students feel more curious about the content.
Before reading 1. Show the title of the passage: Smile, please! and the picture. Lead the students to predict what the story is about. 2. Raise some questions for them. (step by step) Where’s the man What’s the man’s job What's in his hand What was the man doing with his mobile phone The man was taking a photo for________. 1. Cultivate students’ ability to predict the main idea according to the pictures and the title. 2. Make it easier for students to find out more related information about the topic.
Fast reading 1. Structure: Ask the students to divide the passage into 3 parts: the beginning, the body (detailed) and the ending (advice). 2. Content: Divide it into 2 parts: Facts and Advice. 1. Enable the students to have a better understanding of the structure and the content of the passage. 2. Develop the students’ skill of fast reading by reading the time marker and the key words
Careful reading 1. Task 1: Read paragraph 1 and complete the table quickly. (who, when, where, and what) 2. Task 2: Ask students to read Paragraph 2-3 and answer the questions: 1) When and where did the snake come from 2) How many times did the snake bite him How do you know about it 3. Task 3: Read paragraph 4-6 and fill in the blanks. 4. Task 4: What is Henry’s advice What about giving more tips to this kind of accident 1. Lead the students to understand how to read a story and pay attention to the 5 elements. 2. Have the students find out the specific information according to the key words. (again---twice) 3. Enable the students to guess the feelings of the characters based on some details.
Post reading 1. Group work: Retell the story based on time markers and pictures. 2. Deep Thinking: 1) What do you think of Henry 2) Why is the title “Smile, please!” but not “An accident” 3. Conclusion: Smile to the accidents. Smile to life! 1. Develop students’ ability of teamwork. 2. Get the students to have a deep thinking and share their ideas to others. 3. Understand the language style of English articles as well as the British humor.
课后反思 本堂课是关于 accidents的阅读课，通过预测图片的内容到猜测文章大意，分析一个事件的开端，过程和结尾（给予建议）；解析文本的字里行间的意思，最后让学生理解作者写作诙谐幽默的语言特点。内容方面：本课堂容量比较大，话题难度比较大。时间安排方面比较紧，导致后面写作时间不足。基础薄弱的学生，在 deep thinking方面，很难流利的方式表达出来，学生受惠面不够广。 本节课的不足之处在于教师的课堂评价有待改进。课上教师用到的评价手段不够丰富和准确，主要用到了正确度、流畅度、语言丰富度这几个维度对学生的表现进行评价，不够具体。没有真正落实教学评一体化，在下一次的课堂中，应该增加课堂评价量表，让学生能从客观的师生评价或生生互评中得到思维层次的变化。教师的课堂智慧也应在一次次的课堂实践中得到磨炼和提升。
