Text analysis Thematic context : People and self Genre: self-introduction Source of text: The teaching material of my lesson is chosen from People’s Education Press, Book 1 Unit 1, Teenage Life. And the topic is from, Reading and Thinking, The Freshman Challenge. What: In this article, the author introduces the challenges he faced in the first week of senior high school, and his attitude towards these challenges and the solutions he found at the end. Why: the author hopes students learn that life is always full of challenges, what we need to do is not only having positive attitude, but also finding the ways to solve them. How: The story goes based on Adam’s experience in the first week of high school. It is developed by three lines. First, the challenges Adam faced. Second, Adam’s attitude towards these challenges. Third, the ways Adam found to solve these challenges.
Students analysis What they have My 45 students are in senior one, the first semester of senior high school. Most students have learned English for 3 years, so they have accumulated some daily vocabularies and sentences, which helps them understand this passage. Meanwhile, this passage is close to their real life--they just go from junior high school to senior high school, they may face the same challenges, so they would be interested in it. What they need Although students have a foundation in language, the speed and quality of reading is still a problem for students. They need to learn some skills to improve their reading ability. Many students couldn’t adapt to senior high school life at the beginning, and they may also face some challenges, but they don’t know how to deal with them.
Teaching objectives By the end of this lesson, my students will be able to: 1.retell the challenges Adam faced and his solutions. 2. understand the reading strategy---skimming. 3. summarize Adam’s personal qualities. 4.write the challenges you faced in high school and the solutions you took.
Focal and difficult points Focal points: Students can describe the challenges Adam faced, his attitude to these challenges and the solutions he got. Students will find main ideas by taking a quick look at the title, pictures, key words, phrase and topic sentences. Difficult points: Students will summarize Adam’s personal qualities from the factual information they get in the text and learn to be positive and take effective ways to deal with challenges. After learning this passage, students will be capable of writing a passage about the challenges they faces and the solutions they took.
