And the topic is from, Understanding ideas, The well that changed the world. What: In this article, the author introduces Ryan’s story of building wells in Africa and encouraging more and more people to join him in helping make the world a better place. Why: the author hopes students learn that as long as you have the awareness of helping others and put it into practice, you will make a difference. How: The story goes based on Ryan’s life experience. It is developed by three lines to show how Ryan helps others and makes a difference. First, Ryan’s awareness and behavior of building wells to help people in Africa. Second, people in Africa have benefited from Ryan’s help. Third, more and more people are inspired by Ryan’s behavior to help people in Africa.
Students analysis What they have My 45 students are in senior two, the second year of senior high school. Actually, most students have mastered some reading strategies, like scanning, skimming and getting the main ideas, but most of the time, they just read for grades. And as a teenager, they have basic information about Africa and the awareness of helping others, but they do not know how to start. What they need In this lesson, I expect my students to read for meaning, and during the reading process, they would improve their ability of organizing and analyzing information to form logical, critical and creative thinking and to explore the meaning behind lines. And after learning this passage, they would understand that apart from having the awareness of helping others, they are expect to understand how to take action to help others.
Teaching objectives By the end of this lesson, my students would be able to: 1.illustrate how Ryan helped African and influenced more people. 2. understand put their awareness of helping others into action. 3. write other ways to help African get fresh water.
Focal and difficult points Focal points: Students will understand the theme of this passage-- be helpful to others and think about how to help, then you would make a difference by organizing and analyzing information.
