短语a number of相当于some，后面跟可数名词的复数形式，注意它与另外一个词组the number of的区别，后者的意思是“……的数目”，其后动词应为单数形式。
a number of可以转变成numbers of, 它的前面可以用large, great修饰, 表示程度, 意思是"大量的……" 。
the number of ……的数目，构成主语时谓语动词用单数形式。

living: 其反义词为dead，指包括人和动植物的生命没有消失、仍然存在的状态。
