Kew Gardens is not only a popular tourist destination in London, but also a botanic garden and a research center that has the largest collection of living plants at a single site. So, let’s explore the Royal Botanic Gardens with CGTN’s reporter Robyn Dwyer.
Palm House
The first stop is the Palm House, a giant indoor rainforest with a wide range of plants. Visitors can enjoy these exotic plants while researchers can study the secrets of these flora. Eatable plants such as cocoa tree and African oil palm are all preserved here to keep the diversity of food resources. At the same time, it houses many medical use plants, including some that are used to treat cancer.
Temperate House
Known as the world’s largest Victorian glasshouse, the Temperate House is home to1,500 species of plants from temperate regions of the world. Some of the species kept here have gone extinct in the wild, such as Encephalartos woodii, a cycad from South Africa. And some are already extinct like Saint Helena olive, but the Kew has stored its DNA.
Mediterranean Garden
In the Mediterranean Garden, one can see plants from the Southern Europe, such as rosemary, olives and cork oak. Walking in the garden, one can feel the non-indoor vibe (氛围) of the Mediterranean and learn about the economic as well as scientific uses of these plants.
On International Day for Biological Diversity this year, join CGTN to travel around the world’s national parks and reserves across seven continents. Our next program is to visit penguins and seals in the Antarctic Ice Aquarium Norway. Please stay tuned!
1. What do the three stops have in common
A. They store plants for medical use.
B. They have plants of economic value.
C. They house plants of seven continents.
D. They own plants for scientific research.
2. Which one suits a visitor preferring outdoor sites
A. Palm House. B. Temperate House.
C. Antarctic Ice Aquarium. D. Mediterranean Garden.
3. Where is the text most probably taken from
A. A botanic dictionary. B. A TV travel series.
C. A trip advertisement. D. A biodiversity essay.

Compared with Marie Curie, Wu Chien-shiung is not a household name in China, where she was born and grew up, or in the United States, where she spent most of her life.
Wu’s father received a modern education in Shanghai, and in 1913, founded the first school for girls in Taicang, aiming to break the old sexist advocacy that it was women’s virtue to have no talents, which had the most profound influence on Wu’s life. Now, the school has become Mingde Senior Middle School.
Working in the scientific world dominated by men, she never gave up or lowered her standards even if unequally treated. After graduating from the former National Central University in Nanjing, Wu, aged 24, enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley to continue her study in physics. She was the first woman to be president of American Physical Society.
To get accurate results from experiments, she worked seriously day and night at a laboratory and gained a reputation for accuracy. There was a saying among physicists: “If the experiment was done by Wu, it must be correct.” As one of the most influential nuclear physicists of the 20th century, she thoroughly changed human’s view of the universe. Her experiments overturned many previous experimental results and theories.
Wu lived a simple life, but she set up a funding program in honor of her father with her life savings, rewarding students and teachers at Mingde Senior Middle School. In 1997, Wu died aged 85 in the US. According to her will, she was buried in her hometown Taicang. Chiang Tsai-chien, the author of her biography, Madame Wu Chien-shiung: The First Lady of Physics Research, wrote the epitaph (墓志铭) that starts, “Here’s buried the most prominent female physicist Wu Chien-shiung”, and ends, “she was a distinguished world citizen, and was forever a Chinese”.
4. Why did Wu’s father found the first school for girls
A. To promote Wu’s personal development.
B. To pursue gender and education equality.
C. To display his well-educated background.
D. To improve educational assessment system.
5. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. Wu worked as the first female physicist.
B. Attachment to native land never left her.
C. Sexist advocacy gave rise to her simple life.
D. Wu followed her father’s will to fund a program.
6. Which words best describe Wu
A. Persistent in faith. B. Tolerant of sexism.
C. Ambitious for perfection. D. Well-known in her motherland.
7. What is the best title of the text
A. A Woman Who Thrilled the World

New research from Holland suggests that good conversational flow has a powerful effect on people’s feelings of self-respect and belonging, and that even brief silences—just four seconds long—during a conversation are enough .... As Tom Jacobs puts it, “Smooth conversational flow is associated with positive emotions, and a heightened sense of belonging, self-respect, social confirmation and agreement.”
For the study, researchers performed two experiments in which they studied participants’ responses to awkward silences. In the first, 102 college students read one story of two versions. The first version described someone making an unsympathetic remark—“I think fat people should pay for two seats on the bus”—which was followed by an obvious silence. In the second version, conversation flowed without pause after the remark.
The students were asked to imagine themselves as the speaker who made the faux pas. Not surprisingly, they reported feeling more anxious, rejected and less self-confident in the spot with the awkward silence than in the latter version.
The second experiment involved 60 undergrads watching videos of similar cases by turns, but in this case, the questionable remark took place in a conversation involving the topic of plagiarism (抄袭) among professors. In one case, the statement was followed by a four-second silence; in the other version, conversation continued to flow smoothly. Although the videos contained no other tips about the silence and viewers weren’t even consciously aware of the pause, students who viewed the version that contained the break in conversation again reported greater feelings of rejection and lower self-respect.
The researchers suggest that sensitivity toward signs of rejection and exclusion is not a matter of life and death. Luckily, the consequences of social rejection are typically far less terrible these days.
8. What words can best cover“...” in paragraph 1
A. to let the speaker know it’s time for the end
B. to make the speaker feel negative and rejected
C. to have the audiences rethink what they have heard
D. to inspire the speaker to talk about what the audiences like ·
9. What does the underlined phrase “faux pas” in paragraph 3 mean
A. A wrong judgment.
B. An affectionate remark.
C. A subconscious response.
D. An inappropriate statement.
10. What can we learn from the experiments
A. Self-respect can be built up at ease.
B. Audiences may benefit from the silence.
C. Unconscious sensitivity to the silence exists.
D. Conversational flow ensures good atmosphere.
11. What is the passage mainly talking about
A. The significance conversational habits have.
B. The negative impact of the silence on people.
C. The multiple causes of low self-respect nowadays.
D. The various roles social rejection plays these days.
B 9. D 10. C 11. B
根据第一段中“good conversational flow has a powerful effect on people’s feelings of self-respect and belonging (良好的对话流对人们的自尊和归属感有很大的影响)”以及本段中“Smooth conversational flow is associated with positive emotions, and a heightened sense of belonging, self-respect, social confirmation and agreement.(流畅的对话流与积极的情绪、高度的归属感、自尊、社会认同和认同有关。)”
根据第一段中“Smooth conversational flow is associated with positive emotions, and a heightened sense of belonging, self-respect, social confirmation and agreement. (流畅的对话流与积极的情绪、高度的归属感、自尊、社会认同和认同有关。)”可知,流畅的对话流与积极的情绪、高度的归属感、自尊、社会认同和认同有关,相对应的短暂的沉默会使说话者感到消极和被拒绝;同时根据划线词后面的内容“Not surprisingly, they reported feeling more anxious, rejected and less self-confident in the spot with the awkward silence than in the latter version.(不出所料,与后一个版本相比,他们在尴尬的沉默场景中感到更焦虑、更被拒绝、更不自信。)”
根据倒数第二段中“Although the videos contained no other tips about the silence and viewers weren’t even consciously aware of the pause, students who viewed the version that contained the break in conversation again reported greater feelings of rejection and lower self-respect.
B选项“The negative impact of the silence on people. (沉默对人的负面影响。)”概括文章的主要内容。故选B。
D
Plato believed that men are divided into three classes: gold, silver and bronze. Vilfredo Pareto, an Italian economist, argued that “ the vital few” contributed to most progress. Such viewpoints are taboo (禁忌) today in public life. Politicians avoid talking of a “leadership class” or “the vital few”. School recruitment turns away from picking winners. Universities welcome the masses: more people now teach at British universities than attended them in the1950s.
In the private sector things could hardly be more different. The world’s best companies struggle tirelessly to find and keep the vital few. They offer them fat pay packets, extra training, powerful instruction and more challenging assignments. Private-equity (私人股权) firms rely heavily on a few stars. Firms in emerging markets are desperate to find high-flyers who can cope with rapid growth and fast-changing environments.
Few people know more about how companies manage talent than Bill Conaty and RamCharan. Mr. Conaty led the human-resources department at General Electric (GE) for 14years. Mr. Charan has spent the past few decades presenting proposals to some celebrated entrepreneurs (企业家). Their recent book, The Talent Masters, provides. a nice mix of portraits of well-known talent factories, such as GE and Procter & Gamble (P&G).
Successful companies make sure that senior managers are involved with “ talent development”. Jack Welch and A. G. Lafley, former bosses of GE and P&G, claimed that they spent 40% of their time on personnel. Andy Grove, who ra n Intel, a chipmaker, obliged all the senior people, including himself, to spend at least a week a year instructing high-flyers . Nitin Paranjpe, the boss of Hindustan Unilever, recruits people from campuses and regularly visits high-flyers in their offices.
Elitism (精英主义) has its drawbacks. In their rush to classify people, companies can miss potential stars. Those who are singled out for special treatment can become too full of themselves.
12. The change that occurred in British universities reflects that .
A. more students enroll for schools
B. people of today are much cleverer
C. UK attaches importance to education
D. elitism in public organizations declines
13. Which people belong to “high-flyers” based on the passage
A. Potential clients. B. Faithful employees.
C. Competent managers. D. Celebrated politicians.
14. How is paragraph 4 mainly developed
A. By listing examples. B. By classification.
C. By analyzing causes. D. By describing a process.
15. Which statement can be inferred from the passage
A. Discrimination in workplaces will get more serious.
B. Famous companies’ elitism management is worth trying.
C. The Talent Masters offers advice to some leading bosses.
D. Elitism may get some potential talented people excluded.
D 13. C 14. A 15. D
根据第一段中“School recruitment turns away from picking winners. Universities welcome the masses: more people now teach at British universities than attended them in the1950s.(学校招聘不再挑选优胜者。大学欢迎大众:现在在英国大学教书的人比上世纪50年代的学生还多。)”可知,如今在英国大学教书的人比50年代的学生还多,是因为学校不再只挑选优胜者任职,由此推断英国大学(公共组织)中的精英主义在下降。故选D。
【13题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第二段中“who can cope with rapid growth and fast-changing environments.(能够应对快速增长和快速变化的环境。)”
根据第四段中“Jack Welch and A. G. Lafley, former bosses of GE and P&G, claimed that they spent 40% of their time on personnel. Andy Grove, who ra n Intel, a chipmaker, obliged all the senior people, including himself, to spend at least a week a year instructing high-flyers . Nitin Paranjpe, the boss of Hindustan Unilever, recruits people from campuses and regularly visits high-flyers in their offices.(通用电气(GE)和宝洁(P&G)的前老板杰克 韦尔奇(Jack Welch)和雷富礼(A. G. Lafley)声称,他们将40%的时间花在人事上。 故选A。
根据最后一段中“Elitism (精英主义) has its drawbacks. In their rush to classify people, companies can miss potential stars. Those who are singled out for special treatment can become too full of themselves.(精英主义有其缺点。在匆忙给人分类的过程中,公司可能会错过潜在的明星。那些被挑选出来接受特殊待遇的人可能会变得过于自满。)”可知,精英主义可能会使一些有潜力的人才被排除在外。故选D。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Do you know anyone who has gone backpacking _____16_____ It often means no fixed plans regarding accommodation or destination. The word “ backpacking ” comes from “backpack”, a type of bag that you carry on your back. Travelers typically fill a backpack with life essentials, like clothing, plus anything extra needed for adventure. The stereotypical view of a backpacker is someone in their 20s, keen to tick off items on their bucket list(愿望清单). But, forget this. _____17_____
Last year, my best friend’s parents retired aged 65 and set off on a 630-mile trail along the southwest coast of England. Each carrying a 1 5kg backpack, Mike and Lorrain e hiked along cliffs, explored golden sandy beaches and even cycled. _____18_____ It varied from Bed & Breakfast to camping in fields full of sheep. They did stop for the occasional well-deserved cup of tea—they were in England after all.
___19___ But few begin with as little as Othmane Zolati from Morocco. In 2015, he embarked on a nearly four-year journey with only $ 80, zigzagging (曲折前进) across 24African countries and filming his experience to showcase Africa’s diversity and beauty on a low budget. He told BBC What’s New that he often relied on odd jobs and the kindness of strangers to continue his travels. _____20_____ South Africa was Othmane’s final destination and, on reaching it, he said, “It was one of the best moments in my life. It made me know that if you fight for something, you really stick to that goal and then you will reach it”.
So, don’t give up. If you want to travel, you can, regardless of your age or budget!
A. But it was definitely worth it.
B. Surprisingly, he made it with nobody’s help.
C. You’re about to find out that anyone can backpack.
D. It’s a type of travel that is low-cost and independent.
E. Backpackers are also known for travelling with little money.

可知,本段主要讲解背包旅行的花费情况,故E选项“Backpackers are also known for travelling with little money.
由上文“ He told BBC What’s New that he often relied on odd jobs and the kindness of strangers to continue his travels. (他告诉BBC新闻,他经常依靠打零工和陌生人的善意来继续他的旅行。)”可知,下面要说跟这些“旅程中的艰难”有关的话题,由后文“South Africa was Othmane’s final destination and, on reaching it, he said, “It was one of the best moments in my life. It made me know that if you fight for something, you really stick to that goal and then you will reach it”. (南非是Othmane的最终目的地,到达那里后,他说:“这是我一生中最美好的时刻之一。它让我知道,如果你为某件事而奋斗,你真的会坚持这个目标,然后你就会达到它。”)”可知,本句要表达这些艰难是值得的,才会引起下文的美好,故A选项“But it was definitely worth it. (但这绝对是值得的。)”能承上启下,符合题意。A项中的“it”指代前文的艰难。故选A。

空处指代“全世界苎麻的产量”,结合上文“The ramie output in China”可知,空处为同类异物特指代,且output不可数,应用that,相当于the output (of the world)。故填that。
空处应填连词连接上下文句子,结合常识和上文“Since ramie raw material has a thick gum and is irregular in texture, each step of procedure is purely manual.(由于苎麻原料胶厚,质地不规则,所以每一步都是纯手工制作的)”可知,在纺织工完成一件衣服前,有很多步骤需要完成,因此用before“在……之前”引导时间状语从句符合题意。故填before。
(be) dazzling to the eyes“耀眼”是固定搭配。故填to。
故填where。
故填the。
空处应填名词作宾语,表示“创新”应用innovation;该词既可以作可数名词,也可以作不可数名词;当作可数名词时,根据下文“integrating the aesthetics of the times, and using popular art design and cultural packaging”可知,应用innovation的复数形式。故填innovation(s)。
故填to give。

I stayed mostly at home recovering from major surgery for breast cancer. Then my Today show colleague Matt threw me a lifeline by asking whether I felt well enough to tape a“ Where in the World ” segment (节目). He suggested kindly that I pick a couple of days and escape. On second thought, I jumped at the chance.
The trip was fun, and on the plane back home, my plan was to sleep for the entire flight. The earbuds were an inch away from going in when the guy beside turned to me and said, “Hi. How are you doing I recognize you from somewhere.”
“I work on the Today show,” I told him, still holding my earbuds.
He smiled at me. “How’s Matt Is Matt nice ”
“Yeah,” I said. “Matt’s nice.”
“How’s Al Al seems funny.”
He then noticed I was wearing a compression sleeve (压力袖套) on my arm and asked what that was. I told him I’d had a “procedure” and needed the sleeve to fly, hoping we could change the subject.
But he continued, “What procedure did you have ”
“I had an operation,” I said vaguely. Defeated by his curiosity, I finally said, “I had breast cancer. But, I hope that’s not the first thing you think of when getting off this flight, telling your kids, ‘Hey, I sat next to this girl with breast cancer.’”
He paused for a moment and said, “What’s wrong with that It is part of you, like going to college or getting married. Let me give you some advice: Don’t hog(独占) your journey. It’s not just for you. Think of how many people you could help.”
I could feel tears coming down my face.
“Look! You have a choice in life. You can either put your story deep in your pockets and take it to your grave, or you can help someone.”
Despite being open on a show, I’ve always been a private person, and aside from the few people who needed to know, I’d kept my illness secret. I didn’t want to be defined by my weakness.
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150 左右;

But this man, Ken, showed me that my illness gave me strength.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
But this man, Ken, showed me that my illness gave me strength. Not until then did I wake up to the message that it gave me the ability to lighten someone else’s load. My eyes glittering with excitement, I decided I was going to share my story publicly. Before long, I talked about my illness and the conversation with Ken on air. Floods of letters rushed in, mostly pouring the writers’ hearts out or offering to lend a hand. Together with some volunteers, I eventually founded a non-profit organization, targeting people trapped in similar cases, in the hope of reigniting their passion for life.
Years later, awarded for my volunteer work at a charity event, I met Ken again. Never had we met after the encounter on the flight, but an audience of Today, who happened to be Ken’s best friend, wound up contacting me and mentioning Ken’s struggling life with prostate cancer. Amazed at his positive attitude towards life, I was more impressed with how powerful his words and deeds had influenced so large a crowd. Ken was siting there grinning as I said, “He’s touched a lot of people’s lives. He obviously touched a stranger like me! And it’s always better to share and heal than to try to hide away.”

B. An affectionate remark.
C. A subconscious response.
D. An inappropriate statement.
10. What can we learn from the experiments
A. Self-respect can be built up at ease.
B. Audiences may benefit from the silence.
C. Unconscious sensitivity to the silence exists.
D. Conversational flow ensures good atmosphere.
11. What is the passage mainly talking about
A. The significance conversational habits have.

G. Lafley former bosses of GE and P&G, claimed that they spent 40% of their time on personnel.
12 The change that occurred in British universities reflects that .
A. more students enroll for schools
B. people of today are much cleverer
C. UK attaches importance to education
D. elitism in public organizations declines
13. Which people belong to “high-flyers” based on the passage
A. Potential clients. B. Faithful employees.
C. Competent managers. D. Celebrated politicians.
14. How is paragraph 4 mainly developed
A. By listing examples. B. By classification.
C. By analyzing causes. D. By describing a process.
15. Which statement can be inferred from the passage
A. Discrimination in workplaces will get more serious.
B. Famous companies’ elitism management is worth trying.
C. The Talent Masters offers advice to some leading bosses.
D. Elitism may get some potential talented people excluded.
