Analysis of teaching content This unit is centered around the theme of "agricultural production" for the study of English language knowledge. It starts from the surface and gradually goes deeper, covering vocabulary, grammar, listening, speaking, and reading and writing, providing a comprehensive introduction to English language knowledge.
Teaching objectives Based on the English language activity view, students can: By analyzing vocabulary, master key vocabulary words, such as "pioneer" and "hunger". Through the import of pictures and videos, gain knowledge about the significant contributions made by Yuan Longping, the father of hybrid rice, in increasing rice production. By observing and analyzing the text, utilize reading strategies to gather information, process and analyze information, and understand the text. Though group discussion, improve the ability to apply language knowledge comprehensively. Though learning the passage, develop a profound appreciation for the immense motivation that dreams can bring to one's life.
Teaching key and difficult points Key points: Help students better understand the text and analyze it by utilizing reading strategies. Difficult points: Transfer the knowledge gained from various activities, that is, transitioning from familiarity to proficiency.
Teaching methods In this lesson, ESA teaching method is adopted in order to improve students’ reading skills and their oral English. Engage Stage: The primary focus is to stimulate students' interest in learning through the use of pictures, videos, and question-and-answer sessions. Study Stage: The main approach is to assist students in utilizing reading strategies to comprehend the text by answering questions, making judgments, and so on. Activate Stage: The main emphasis is on personal, pair, and group activities to help students accomplish various tasks in the classroom, thereby enabling them to transition from knowledge acquisition to practical application.
Teaching procedures Step 1 Lead in (3 minutes) Presenting a few images to provide background knowledge, introduce the main theme of the article, and then pose questions to engage students' thinking. (Justification: This step can get students interested in the topic and arouse their curiosity and spur them to read.) Step 2 Pre-reading (5 minutes) Drawing on background knowledge, encourage students to make predictions and inferences, leading to the introduction of today's key figure, Yuan Longping, and the main theme “A Pioneer of All People”. Explain the meaning of the word 'pioneer' to deepen students' understanding. (Justification: This step can get students familiar with the new words and better get the mean idea of this passage.) Step 3 While-reading (20 minutes) Fast reading Students read the passage fast to find out the main idea about each paragraph. Students are able to summarize the main idea of the passage according to these ideas of the each paragraph. Careful reading Students read the article carefully and gain a deep understanding of the text. Their comprehension of each paragraph is assessed through answering questions, making judgments, and other means of evaluation. For example: What does Mr. Yuan look like in para 1 What is his life goal since 1953 and why in para 2 What does he view of his life in para 3 What are his two dreams in para 4 (Justification: Fast reading can help students master the main idea and details of the passage. Careful reading encourages students to think with the questions and better master the details of the passage. ) Step 4 Post-reading(15 minutes) Students create a mind map to summarize and synthesize the entire article. Through the introduction of background knowledge, the students were triggered to think and have a group discussion. (Justification: Creating mind maps can enhance students' ability to summarize and synthesize information. Group discussions can improve students' teamwork and collaboration skills, as well as facilitate emotional enrichment.) Step 5 Homework(2 minutes) Required homework: Write a composition about your dreams (within 200 words). Optional homework: If you think about any other major developments that would make a great difference to more than hunger. (Justification: Writing can enhance students' writing skills and ability to organize their thoughts and language effectively. Required and optional assignments cater to students of different levels, adhering to the principle of individualized instruction and allowing each student to make progress according to their own abilities.)
