Teaching philosophy This is an instructional design based on English learning activities including three kinds of activities which are activities for learning and understanding, activities for applying and practicing and activities for transforming and innovating. Applying these activities is beneficial for students to understand text better, apply English better in real life and cultivate their creative thinking. This design is based on integrative unit teaching of thematic meaning. This lesson which is about people’s life has been changed by the Internet shows unit theme--the Internet and helps students have a better understanding about it. This design is based on the learner--centered teaching method. In this lesson, the teacher will guide students to think individually and discuss with their teammates to cultivate their core competence of English learning.
Text analysis Thematic context : People and society Genre: narration Source of text: This passage is chosen from book 2 (PEP version) Unit 3 The Internet(Stronger Together:how we have been changed by the Internet) What: In this passage, the author tells us Jan’s experience about how her life has been changed by the Internet and how she has changed others’ lives and society with the help of the Internet. Why: The students are supposed to learn from Jan’s experience and think about how to make the best use of the Internet to make their and others' lives better. How: In this passage, the author takes the wide application of the Internet as the background, and compares people’s changes before and after using the Internet to encourage students to take full advantage of the Internet and pass positive energy with it. And this passage consists of the following three parts. Paragraph 1: How has the Internet changed people’s life Paragraph 2-4: How has the Internet changed Jan’s life And how has Jan changed (show her love to others)others’ life and the world with the Internet Paragraph 5: To encourage people to take full advantage of the Internet and help others with it.
Students analysis My 45 students are in senior one, the first year of senior high school. They are enthusiastic about studying, and able to get detailed information and express their views briefly. However, they are not good at reading headline to predict the main idea of text. And they lack the ability to summarize, integrate knowledge and evaluate content critically. Moreover, the topic of the Internet is close to students’ lives. They surf the Internet every day, but it is unfamiliar for them to make the best use of it to help themselves and others,even the whole society.
Teaching objectives By the end of this lesson, students should be able to: 1.Grasp the information about how the Internet has changed Jan’s life and how Jan showed her love to others and the whole society with the help of the Internet. 2.Master the structure of text and the writing purpose of each paragraph. 3. Evaluate the role of people in changing others and the world with the Internet. 4. Think and tell more examples about how the Internet has changed our life.
Focal and difficult points Focal points: Students are able to find out information about people’s facts and feelings before and after using the Internet. And they can compare this information to observe the changes of people’s lives. Difficult point: Students can master the learning strategy --reading headline to predict the main idea of text. Students can explore and summarize the main idea--people can show their love and pass positive energy with the help of the Internet.And they are supposed to think about as a student, what can they do with the Internet to help others and show their love.

Step 1 5mins Individual Work Ss watch a video about the widespread application of the Internet in our life. And think about 2 questions: 1.How has your life been changed by the Internet 2. Can you imagine a world without the Internet What would it be like /What role does the Internet play in our life 1. To create a context and lead to the topic---the Internet. 2. To let Ss understand the Internet has changed their life and realize its importance.
Step 2 5mins Individual Work T directs Ss to focus on the title: Stronger Together: How We Have Been Changed by the Internet and think about these following questions. How many parts are there in the title What does together mean And think about the changes the Internet has brought happened to just yourself or everyone If it happened to everyone,how？Can you give some examples How can people be stronger with the help of the Internet And how can they be stronger together Predict what kind of attitude the writer will take towards the Internet Positive or negative 1.To help Ss predict what the text is about and what’s the author’s attitude towards the Internet through title. 2. To stimulate students’ interests of studying this passage.
Step 3 14mins Individual Work Team Work Pair Work Class Work T invites Ss to read the whole passage and answer these following questions. (1) who became stronger together （2）How did they become stronger (Individual Work) 2. Ss read paragraph 1 and answer what kind of changes the Internet has brought to people. (Individual Work) 3.Ss read paragraph 2 and find out how the Internet has changed and improved Jan’s life. (to find out Jan’s changes from facts and her feelings)(Team Work) 4. Ss read paragraph 3 and are expected to explore and summarize older people’s changes before and after using the Internet.to find out older people’s changes from facts and her feelings(Pair Work) 5. Ss read paragraph 4 and answer this question-- what’s Jan’s next goal (Class Work) 6.T guides Ss to explore and summarize what Jan showed older people and what she wants to show society from her experience--love and positive energy.(Class Work) 7. Ss read Paragraph 5 and answer this question-- why does Jan want to help others with the Internet (Class Work) 8. T asks Ss to read the passage again and answer this following question: What’s the author’s purpose in writing this passage (Class Work) To help Ss get detailed information about people becoming stronger together with the help of the Internet. To cultivate Ss’ ability of comparing and summarizing from details. To let Ss know the writing purpose of passages.
Activities for applying and practicing
Step 4 8mins Individual Work Team Work Ss work in teams to do role play. One student plays the part of an interviewer, and other three Ss are Jan, the 59-year-old man and the 61-year-old woman respectively. The interviewer needs to interview them how the Internet has changed their life and what are their opinions or feelings about these changes.(Team Work) T encourages Ss to think about, as a student what we can do with the Internet especially,using it to help others. (Individual Work) To emphasize and consolidate the content and main idea of the text. To cultivate Ss’ creative thinking and the ability of summary.

Step 5 10mins Team Work Individual Work T guide Ss to analyze and evaluate the meaning and form of this text. Ss work in teams to analyze the author’s attitude towards the Internet,and discuss the features and writing technique of narration.( Team work) 2. T invites Ss to tell a story about their own experience of using the Internet.(Do you think your life has been changed by the Internet？If so, how ) And describe what you will do to help others with it.(Individual work) To help Ss learn the structure of narration. To cultivate Ss’ creative thinking and the ability of expression through open questions.
Summary
Step 6 3mins Class Work Ss reflect and summarize what they have learned in this class.
Homework
Interview a person about how the Internet has changed his/her life and how he/she makes the best use of the Internet,especially to help others. Then writing a passage about 100 to 150 words to describe his/her experience.
