In this lesson, in order to help students have a better understanding of this passage, the teacher will design some activities to guide and help students do team work and self-study.
Text analysis Thematic context : human and self Genre: a news report Source of text: The text is a news reports selected from the Book 1 of the Compulsory English published by the Yilin Press. What: The news report is about a teenage girl fainted in her class because she skipped meals to lose weight, which reveals a common phenomenon that many teenagers of both sexes have unhealthy weight-loss habits. And heath experts are making some efforts to solve it. Why: the author hopes students understand that being healthy is being beautiful, and teenagers need to choose healthy ways to become beautiful. How: the news report goes based on Jennifer’s story of losing weight which reveals the social phenomenon that in our society, most people think being beautiful is being thin. However, health experts suggest that teenagers should choose healthy ways to become beautiful.
Students analysis What they have My 45 students are in senior one, the first year of senior high school. Actually, most students have mastered some reading strategies, like scanning, skimming, so they are able to find specific information in the text. And in the last class, they have learned some new words, like faints, extreme, slim down and so on. Of course, this topic is about losing weight, it is close to their real life, so they would be interested in it. What they need Although they master some reading skills, they are not good at reading for meaning, and they are not familiar with inferring words’ meaning in the context, and they also need to cultivate critical thinking.
Teaching objectives By the end of this lesson, my students will be able to: infer the meaning of words in context illustrate what is beauty, and how can teenagers and people become beautiful. express their opinions about the weight loss current situation in their class.
