“You should get a cat, ”my therapist(治疗专家)said. “A cat ” I couldn’t even look after myself. . I took a deep breath and carefully considered the idea of welcoming a feline (猫科的)friend into my life. This seemed like too easy a fix for the fact that I couldn’t leave the house without bursting into tears.
When my partner and I found Cinnamon, her adoption profile made her out as the perfect kitten. We filled out the paperwork and prepared for her arrival.
When she came home, it became increasingly obvious that Cinnamon didn’t understand “no”, “stop it” or “don’t do that”. She was the worst cat I’ve ever owned. I was beginning to doubt my therapist’s advice.
After visiting our vet, she concluded that Cinnamon just wanted our attention. She fought tooth and nail to get a bite of our meals. She’d fearlessly lick sharp knives when left unattended for a split second. Cinnamon stole my heart with her bravery and kept me busier than I’d ever expected.
We decided to start taking her for walks. I could barely leave the house before, but my heart couldn’t say no to Cinnamon. Cinnamon showed me what bravery looked like. She didn’t stop to consider every possible outcome of a situation; she simply went for it. If there was a dog at a park, she would run toward it. She jumped without knowing where she would land. She loved adventure. I found myself mirroring her behavior after a while, jumping out of bed without a second thought. I began to find the motivation to get out of bed in the morning.
Cinnamon unfortunately passed away after a medical accident. I’m no stranger to sadness or grief, but losing my pet so suddenly was the most confusing emotional experience I’ve had to date. She no longer wakes me up at 5 am begging for breakfast, but she’s still the reason I get up every morning.
Our time is often cut unpredictably, unmistakably short. It would be a shame to live life being anything less than brave and adventurous.

On January 7th, 2022, David Bennett became the first person to have a heart transplanted successfully into him from a pig. On that occasion, mere operation success was the goal. This operation is a milestone for xenotransplantation (异种移植)— the transfer of organs from other species to human patients.
For decades, researchers have attempted to deal with xenotransplantation’s basic problem. This is that the human body, when it recognizes foreign tissue, tends to turn against it. In the case of pigs, the most important marker of foreignness is a sugar molecule (分子) called alpha-Gal. While this molecule does not exist in humans, antibodies to kill it do. So no transplant from a pig with alpha-Gal would last more than a couple of minutes in a human body. In 2003 pigs were produced with a changed genome so as to prevent the enzyme (酶) responsible for making alpha-Gal. This was a step in the right direction, but other barriers popped up.
The pig for David’s operation had a genome changed in ten ways to increase the chances of success. Three genes had been removed to reduce the risk of a human antibody rejecting the organ. A fourth, a growth gene, had also been knocked out, to ensure the heart did not enlarge after transplantation. And six human genes had been added to promote acceptance.
There are other concerns. One is any unknown rejection mechanism. Another is the possibility that the organ may pass viruses to its new host. The pig in question was raised where there was no virus to reduce the chance of that, but it remains a possibility.
In theory, pigs can be raised to provide humans with any solid organ, but some will be more complex than others. Moreover, even if these barriers can be overcome, most researchers still acknowledge that increasing xenotransplantation to meet the world’s demand for organs may take decades. After this news, however, the chances that it will happen eventually have increased.
8. What is the basic problem of xenotransplantation
A. The human body lacks alpha-Gal.
B. The human body resists foreign tissues.
C. The life of the transplanted organ is too short.
D. The enzyme is prevented from making alpha-Gal.
9. Why was a growth gene removed in David’s case
A. Because it would change David’s genome.
B. Because it would lead to heart enlargement.
C. Because it would make the heart more acceptable.
D. Because it would be recognized by David’s antibodies.
10. What can we learn about the pig
A It saved the patient’s life perfectly.
B. It had a decreased number of genes.
C. It had an unknown rejection mechanism.
D. It was raised in a virus-free environment.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of xenotransplantation
A. Optimistic. B. Indifferent. C. Disturbed. D. Uncertain.
B 9. B 10. D 11. A

New research suggests that one night of sleep with just a small amount of light may have negative effects on health.
The small, 20-person study conducted by Dr. Phyllis Zee, director of the Center for Circadian (生理节奏的) and Sleep Medicine, was designed to measure the physiological effects of 100 lux (照度) of artificial light on healthy adults while they were sleeping. For the study, all the participants spent their first night sleeping in a mostly dark room. The next night, half of them slept in a better lit room. Meanwhile, the researchers ran tests on the sleepers: brainwaves, heart rates and blood. In the morning, they’d give both groups a large amount of sugar to see how well their systems responded to it.
The group exposed to the light had raised heart rates throughout the night, and also had trouble getting their blood sugar into a normal range.
These changes suggest the small amount of light was enough to shift the nervous system to a more excited and alert state. “It’s almost like the brain and the heart knew that the lights were on, although the individual was sleeping,” says Zee.
While the findings of this study alone can’t predict what would happen in the long term, Dr. Colwell suspects the harmful effects would be cumulative: “This was only one night, so imagine if you’ re living that way constantly ”
“That’s going to increase the risk of long-term diseases,” says Dr. Charles Czeisler whose research has looked at the consequences of circadian rhythm sleep disorder for longer than just one night. He concluded that the unpleasant effects were primarily because of the “internal clock” being disturbed — not necessarily because of the lack of sleep.
This is not to say that the lack of sleep doesn’t also have negative effects on health — it does — but he says it simply stresses the lasting consequences of being exposed to light at nighttime.
“People think that as long as they fall asleep and are unconscious, it’s not having physiological effects, but that’s simply not true,” Czeisler says.
12. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about
A. How the study is carried out. B. What type of light affects sleep.
C. Who is in charge of the research. D. Why light and sleep are connected.
13. What do we know about the new research
A. Light plays a critical role in regulating circadian rhythm.
B. A small amount of light at night is linked with sleep depth.
C. Leaving the bedroom lights on leads to mental disorder.
D. Sleeping with a little bit of light isn’t good for your health.
14. What does the underlined word “cumulative” in Paragraph 5 mean
A. Common. B. Slight. C. Increasing. D. Accidental.
15. Which of the following might Czeisler agree with
A. The more you sleep, the healthier you will be.
B. Physiological effects disappear with a sound sleep.
C. Sleep quality lies in how you feel about the sleep.
D. It is the circadian rhythm sleep disorder that matters.
A 13. D 14. C 15. D

根据第二段第一句“The small, 20-person study conducted by Dr. Phyllis Zee, director of the Center for Circadian (生理节奏的) and Sleep Medicine, was designed to measure the physiological effects of 100 lux (照度) of artificial light on healthy adults while they were sleeping.(这项由昼夜节律和睡眠医学中心主任菲利斯·泽伊博士进行的20人小型研究旨在测量100勒克斯的人造光对健康成年人睡眠时的生理影响。)”和最后三句“The next night, half of them slept in a better lit room. Meanwhile, the researchers ran tests on the sleepers: brainwaves, heart rates and blood. In the morning, they’d give both groups a large amount of sugar to see how well their systems responded to it.(第二天晚上,他们中的一半睡在光线更好的房间里。与此同时,研究人员对睡眠者进行了测试:脑波、心率和血液。早上,他们会给两组人大量糖,看看他们的系统对糖的反应如何。)”可知,第二段主要是讲研究是怎么进行的。故选A。
根据第一段“New research suggests that one night of sleep with just a small amount of light may have negative effects on health.(新的研究表明,晚上伴着少量的光睡觉可能会对健康产生负面影响。)”
根据第五段中的“This was only one night, so imagine if you’ re living that way constantly (这只是一个晚上,所以想象一下如果你一直这样生活?)”
根据第六段第一句中的“says Dr. Charles Czeisler whose research has looked at the consequences of circadian rhythm sleep disorder for longer than just one night(查尔斯·齐斯勒博士说,他的研究已经对昼夜节律睡眠障碍的后果进行了研究,研究时间超过了一个晚上)”和最后一段中的“People think that as long as they fall asleep and are unconscious, it’s not having physiological effects, but that’s simply not true(人们认为,只要他们睡着了,而且没有意识,就不会产生生理影响,但这根本不是真的)”可知,齐斯勒同意“重要的是昼夜节律睡眠障碍”的观点。
How to Work out Your Worries by Writing
Something troubling you
You should write about it.
Research shows that people who write about a difficult situation often show improved mental and physical health.
____16____ It is a specific technique, and it’s different from writing in a journal. The idea is to reflect honestly and thoughtfully on a particular challenge.
Hundreds of studies over several decades have looked at the potential benefits of expressive writing. It can strengthen the immune system, including for people with illnesses such as flu, cancer and depression. ____17____
Expressive writing works because it allows you to make meaning out of a painful experience, experts say. ____18____ Then translating that experience into language forces you to organize your thoughts. And creating a narrative gives you a sense of control.
But expressive writing isn’t a magical cure-all solution. ____19____ And people coping with a severe injury or depression may not find it useful to do on their own, without therapy(治疗).
Yet it can be a powerful tool for many, in large part because it helps prevent the secrecy people often feel about an injury, as well as their reluctance to face emotions.
____20____ Thinking or talking about an event can lead to reflecting, where you become lost in your emotions. Writing forces you to slow down. The mere act of labeling a feeling—of putting words to an emotion—can lessen the nervous activity in the threat area of the brain. Writing can increase someone’s acceptance of his experience, and acceptance is calming.
A. Why write
B. What if you don’t write
C. Expressive writing gave people the courage to face fears.
D. It shouldn’t be used as a replacement for other treatments.
E. It can also help reduce pain and improve mood, sleep and memory.
F. The first important step is to recognize what it is that is bothering you.
G. Psychologists refer to writing about an unpleasant experience as ”expressive writing“.
G 17. E 18. F 19. D 20. A
根据后文“It is a specific technique, and it’s different from writing in a journal.(这是一种特殊的技巧,与在日记中的写作不同。)” G项“Psychologists refer to writing about an unpleasant experience as “expressive writing.”(心理学家将关于不愉快经历的写作称为“表达性写作”。)”
根据本段首句 “Hundreds of studies over several decades have looked at the potential benefits of expressive writing.(几十年来,数百项研究着眼于表达性写作的潜在好处。)” 空前一句“It can strengthen the immune system, including for people with illnesses such as flu, cancer and depression.(它可以增强免疫系统,包括对流感、癌症和抑郁症患者)”强调表达性写作对人的身体健康有好处;E项“It can also help reduce pain and improve mood, sleep and memory.(它还能帮助减轻疼痛,改善情绪、睡眠和记忆力。)”
根据前文 “Expressive writing works because it allows you to make meaning out of a painful experience(表达性写作之所以有效,是因为它能让你从痛苦的经历中获得意义。)”可知,表达性写作使你从痛苦的经历中获得意义;根据后文“Translating that experience into language forces you to organize your thoughts.(将这种经历转化为语言会迫使你整理思想。)” F项“The first important step is to recognize what it is that is bothering you.(认识到有什么事情困扰着你是重要的第一步。)”
前文“But expressive writing isn’t a magical cure—all solution(但是表达性写作并不是万能灵药。)”说明表达性写作不能解决所有问题;后文“And people coping with a severe injury or depression may not find it useful to do on their own, without therapy(患有严重创伤或抑郁症的人如果不进行医学治疗,独自进行治疗是没有用的。)” 因此空处应该说表达性写作不能治疗所有疾病,不能替代医学治疗;D选项“It shouldn’t be used as a replacement for other treatments.(它不应该被用作医学治疗的替代品。)”
后文“Thinking or talking about an event can lead to reflecting, where you become lost in your emotions. Writing forces you to slow down.(思考或谈论一件事会导致反思,在那里你会迷失在你的情绪中。写作迫使你慢下来。)”说明了写的重要性。空处是本段主题句,A项“Why write (为什么写?)”提出了写的意义的问题;后文回答了这个问题,故A项符合语境。故选A项。

2.and→but
3.discouraging→discouraged
4.teachers→teacher
5.her→me
6.where→when
7.represent→representing
8.去掉to
9.count→counts
10.peaceful→peacefully
故将and改为but。
故将her改为me。
故将where改为when。
故去掉to。

I could barely leave the house before but my heart couldn’t say no to Cinnamon.
4. Why did the author’s therapist recommend that she get a cat

The pig in question was raised where there was no virus to reduce the chance of that but it remains a possibility.
A. It saved the patient’s life perfectly.
B. It had a decreased number of genes.
C. It had an unknown rejection mechanism.
D. It was raised in a virus-free environment.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of xenotransplantation
A. Optimistic. B. Indifferent. C. Disturbed. D. Uncertain.
D
