Can everything be recycled No, not all things can be recycled. But you might be surprised to learn how many things can be recycled. You may already know about plastic bottles. Did you know you can also recycle glass
Glass can be recycled to make all sorts of things. Recycling glass really helps the planet. Making new products from recycled glass causes less air and water pollution. It also uses less energy than making new glass.
When glass arrives at a recycling plant, people and machines sort it by color. Similar colors of glass must be recycled together. That way, recycled products are as pure as possible. This makes them stronger and less likely to break. Once the glass is sorted, it’s washed. That’s when the breaking begins. That’s right! To be recycled, glass has to be broken to make a material called cullet(碎玻璃).
Glass manufacturers love cullet. It’s cheaper than the raw materials they’d need to make new glass. It also melts at a lower temperature. That means they save energy during the production process. Glass manufacturers mix cullet with other materials like sand and soda ash. Then they heat it to over 2,600℉. This makes liquid glass, which can then be poured into a mold (模具). There, it cools and forms a finished glass product.
Most recycled glass is used to make new glass containers, such as jars and bottles. However, recycled glass can also find its way into all sorts of other products including a variety of construction products.
Do you recycle at home or school What glass products should you be sure to recycle when you’ re done with them With everyone doing their part, recycling glass can make a huge difference to the planet!

25. Why do glass manufacturers love cullet
A. It is easy to get. B. It helps cut costs.
C. It can be easily broken. D. It can be mixed with other materials.

Ada Lovelace was born on December 10th 1815. Ada’s mother and father (the famous poet Lord George Gordon Byron) parted just weeks after she was born. Her mother feared her growing up with her father’s changeable nature. To stop this from happening, Ada was forced by her mother to learn science and mathematics which was unusual for women at the time. She was also punished if her work was not up to standard. However, she was greatly interested in mathematics and science and would perhaps have learned about them on her own.
Ada was partially disabled and as a result spent much time studying. Ada knew of her mother’s thought about keeping the creative side of her from germinating (萌芽), however, as Ada herself is known to have said, “If you can’t give me poetry at least give me poetical science.” Ada married at 19, to William King who was made Earl of Lovelace in 1838, at which point she became Lady Ada King, the Countess of Lovelace, but was known as Ada Lovelace. Ada and King had a relatively happy marriage, with King even encouraging his wife’s love for numbers.
During her youth Ada was introduced to the Scot, Mary Somerville, who was known as the “Queen of 19th Century Science” and was the first woman to be accepted into the Royal Astronomical Society. It was through Mary Somerville that Ada first heard of Charles Babbage’s idea for a new calculating (计算) engine. Attracted by this idea, Ada began a period of letter-writing with him that would come to decide her professional life.
Ada met Babbage when she was around 17 and the two became close friends. Babbage was working on an “Analytical Engine”, something he was designing to deal with complex calculations. Ada was later asked to translate an article. She not only translated the article but added pages and pages of notes, calculations and innovations. Her notes were published in 1843 and it turned out that what she had written was so original, it is now seen as the first comprehensive comment on what would become modern-day computer programming. Although impressive, Ada was not actually given credit for the article until 1848.
28. What happened to Ada in her childhood
A. She was pushed to learn scientific knowledge.
B. She had to compare herself with other women.
C. She gave up learning because of her father’s nature.
D. She had no father any more.

A. Ada thought poetry was boring.
B. Ada thought science was creative.
C. Ada was interested in both science and poetry.
D. Ada believed poetry was harder than science.
30. What decided Ada’s professional life
A. Ada was introduced to the Scot, Mary Somerville.
B. Somerville’s suggestions.
C. Her husband’s encouragement.
D. Her communication with Babbage.
31. What did Ada do after she met Babbage
A. She taught people how to program.
B. She invented an “Analytical Engine”.
C. She translated an article and developed it.
D. She praised Babbage’s achievements.

A Beijing-based gene firm on Monday announced the debut (首次亮相) of the world’s first, cloned wild arctic wolf via video,100 days after its birth in a Beijing lab. Experts said its birth pioneers the breeding (繁殖)of more rare and endangered animals through cloning technology.
“To save the endangered animal, we started the research cooperation with Harbin Polarland on cloning the arctic wolf in 2020. After two years of painstaking efforts, the arctic wolf was cloned successfully. It is the first case of its kind in the world,” Mi Jidong, the company’s general manager of the Beijing-based Sinogene Biotechnology Co., said at a press conference in Beijing.
Born on June 10, the wolf, named Maya, is in very good health. Its donor cell came from the skin sample of a wild female arctic wolf, which had been introduced from Canada to Harbin Polarland. The cloning of the arctic wolf was accomplished by constructing 137 new embryos (胚胎), followed by the transfer of 85 embryos to the uteri(子宫) of seven dogs, of which one was born as a healthy wolf-Maya, Zhao noted. The selection of a dog as Maya’s surrogate (代孕) was made because dogs share genetic ancestry with ancient wolves and it’s more likely to succeed through cloning technology, experts said.
He Zhengming, the head of Chinese Experimental Animal Resources Research Institute for Food and Drug Control, said that the cloned animals still have the ability to reproduce if they have intact fertilized eggs. The cloning technology can copy all genetic information for selective breeding, and in this way, it diversifies the population of endangered animals.
From the world’s first mammal clone “Dolly”, cloning technology has provided the possibility to diversify the populations of some species such as cattle, pigs and horses. When endangered species in some places are identified, cloning of cells preserved from freezing technologies could also generate new life, experts said.
However, some raised controversy (争论) relating to the cloned arctic wolf. Sun Ouanhui, a scientist from the World Animal Protection organization, insisted that cloning technology has made great progress since its birth, but it is still being perfected and in the exploratory stage of research, and there are many technical and ethical issues that need to be tackled and treated with caution.
32. What is the significance of the first cloned wild arctic wolf’s birth
A. To produce more endangered species through cloning.
B. To help the scientists win an award.
C To promote the research cooperation.
D. To increase the profit of wildlife reserves.
33. What can be inferred from Paragraph 3
A. Maya is the first cloned arctic wolf in the world.
B. Wild arctic wolves are easily available in Harbin Polarland.
C. There is no scientific support for choosing a dog as Maya’s surrogate.
D. Researchers experienced trial and error to achieve the successful birth of Maya.
34. What’s the author’s attitude toward cloning technology
A. Doubtful. B. Favorable. C. Objective. D. Opposed.
35. Which is the best title of the passage
A. The Research on the Rare and Endangered Animals
B. The Debut of the World’s 1st Cloned Wild Arctic Wolf
C. The Beginning of the Cloning Technology Application
D. The Conservation of Endangered Wildlife through Cloning Technology

I was excited as I walked into the classroom. Today was my birthday! I set down the box of treats I had brought for the class. Birthdays were a big deal in our classroom. The birthday person brought treats for the class, and he or she got to choose someone our teacher called “ the birthday helper” to pass them out. My friends, Andrea, Crystal and I had talked about choosing each other on our birthdays. I still hadn’t decided which of my two best friends I was going to choose. I knew both of them were expecting me to pick them, but I just couldn’t decide. I didn’t want either one of them to be mad at me.
A loud shout stopped my thoughts. “Hi, April!” shouted Lisa.
No one liked Lisa. She had dirty hair that looked like it always needed to be washed. The kids made fun of her a lot. She annoyed me sometimes, too,but I tried to be nice to her.
“Did you bring treats toady ”
“Yes,” I answered. “ Today is my birthday!”
Lisa’s parents were divorced (离婚的), and her dad gave her and her mom lots of problems. Lisa once told me that I was the only friend she had. At times I felt embarrassed (尴尬的)to hang out with her, but she never seemed to notice when I didn’t want her around.
The bell rang, and we quickly went to our seats. Our teacher, Mrs. Doughty, started class, and I pushed aside my thoughts. The rest of the morning flew by, and soon it was time for the lunch break.
Mrs. Doughty announced that today was my birthday. I forced a smile, but my stomach turned over. I retrieved (取回)my cupcakes at the back of the room and slowly went to stand beside Mrs. Doughty. I didn’t know what to do! Should I choose Andrea or Crystal
Then Lisa caught my attention.
“No one ever chooses me on their birthday!” She said loudly. Her face looked so sad. I saw the hurt she felt from the rejection(嫌弃)she constantly faced from our classmates.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Suddenly, I knew my decision.

Dear sir,
I am Li Hua, a student from China, who is studying in London during the summer holiday. Knowing an exhibition of Chinese paintings will be held at the gallery next month, I am writing to apply to become a volunteer.
I have the following advantages. First of all, I speak English fluently, which allows me to communicate with visitors without difficulty. Second, as a Chinese painting lover, I know a lot about this art form. If accepted, I can introduce Chinese painting skills to visitors, helping them know more about Chinese culture.
I think I am qualified to be a volunteer. I would be grateful if you could give me a chance.
范文二:
Dear sir,
I’m a student taking summer courses in London now. Learning volunteers are needed for the coming Chinese painting exhibition in your local art gallery, I can’t wait to apply for the position.
Firstly, my fluent English enables me to communicate smoothly with British painting lovers. Moreover, with a wide knowledge of Chinese paintings, I can introduce the art form better. Better yet, I've participated in several activities, which equipped me with relevant experience.
If accepted, I will spare no effort to introduce those paintings on display and answer questions patiently. I’d appreciate it if you could consider my application.
Yours,
Li Hua
作文二:
Suddenly, I knew my decision. I told Mrs. Doughty that Lisa would be my birthday helper. Lisa’s eyes were wide with surprise. She looked at me, her mouth hanging open. “Really ” she asked in a low voice. I smiled brightly and nodded. Lisa got out of her seat and rushed to my side. She looked so proud to stand beside me as we passed out the treats. I saw my two best friends’ angry looks from across the room. I knew they were mad, but I had done the right thing.
Just before I rushed out to catch the bus after school, Lisa stopped me. Her face brightened with happiness. She threw her arms around my neck and hugged me. “April, you are the best friend I’ve ever had!” she told me. All I could do was smile and hug her back. I felt so good inside! As I watched Lisa run down the hall, happiness filled my heart. This had turned out to be a wonderful birthday after all.
