when I told her that I admired her and how I wished to be a friend of hers, she said, “ We have

Text 10.
A Russian man named Ham has always been interested in constructing things out of glass bottles.
Not long ago, he built a unique house which was built almost entirely of wine bottles.
His children had always admired his work. They encouraged him to build a house someday.
But he always thought it was impossible. When Ham lost his seconds on, who passed away at
the age of 18, he finally decided to build the house in the boy’s memory. So he started the search
for suitable materials. To construct the 99square-metre house, Ham spent about three years
collecting over 12, 000 empty bottles. Ham believes that the house is quite strong and expected
to stand for at least 100 years! In fact, he has built it in such a way that if some of the bottles
break, they can easily be replaced. More interestingly, the house cost five times less than it
would cost to build a house with regular materials. But Ham says he wasn’t thinking about the
money. He just wanted to build the house in the way his son wanted. Ham gave away his piece
of work to his eldest son as a wedding present. His daughter-in-law is quite proud of the house,
and says she can’t wait to decorate it.

Are you interested in higher education in the United States The following advice might help you.
●College, University or Institute
College and universities offer undergraduate degrees in arts and sciences. And both can help prepare young people to earn a living. But many colleges don’t offer graduate studies. Universities are generally bigger, offer more programs and do more research. An institute of technology can offer a wide choice of programs and activities. Seventy-five percent of freshmen go there with a strong interest and involvement in the arts.
●The Application Process
International admissions officers advise students to apply to at least three schools. You may be able to apply online and pay the application charge(费用) with a credit card, or by mail. You should study the websites of schools to find information about how and when to apply, how much it will cost and whether any financial aid is available.

You will need to bring a government form sent to you by your American school that shows you have been accepted. A consular official will also take your picture and your fingerprints. You will also need banking and tax records that show you have enough money to pay for your education.

In my childhood, my mother spent her evening hours doing something for someone else. Sometimes she knitted hats for babies, and at other times, she cooked chicken soup for sick neighbors. Therefore, I wasn’t surprised when one evening my mother announced she had undertaken a new project.
“I am going to telephone seniors,” said my mother. “Every night But you don’t even know these people.” “ It doesn’t matter,” she said, “What’s important is that I listen.”
I was sixteen years old and couldn’t understand why my mother was willing to spend her evenings to strangers. She had friends and my two older sisters to call if she felt lonely. “They will talk your ear off. Some people didn’t even stop to catch breath.” I said.
My attitude didn’t stop my mother’s enthusiasm for the project. That evening , she settled on the sofa and dialed. When she finished the call, I said, “ Why do you care whether she had cookies or rice pudding for dessert ” My mother grasped one of my hands and said in a proud tune, “ I’m the only person she talked to today.”
It took me more than thirty years to fully understand the meaning of that statement. Now, as my mother is near eighty, I find myself thinking about those nightly calls she used to make. I am often the only person who telephoned my mother, and sometimes I’m the only person she speaks to all day. I ask her what she cooked for dinner, but mostly I just listen as she describes a walk she took, or how her dog Lucky stole foods from the refrigerator. I realize that my mother’s calls were life that ensured housebound seniors remained connected to the world. Without her, their world would have been empty.
What is the mother’s purpose of calling the seniors
A. To know what they eat B. To ask for some cookies and pudding
C. To relieve their loneliness D. To teach them how to make dessert
What does the underlined part in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Hurt your hearing B. Blame other’s behaviors
C. Miss important information D. Speak all the time
What can be inferred from the last paragraph
The author started to telephone seniors as her mother
The author realized the value of her mother
The author’s mother preferred to live alone
The author’s mother still keeps connected with the seniors
What is the best title for the passage
A. Seniors blessing B. A new project
C. Nightly calls, lifeline calls D. Call your parents often
C
Roller coasters in the park are fast and exciting. But passing a painful kidney( 肾 )stone is not. The process is painful and can take a long time. But American researchers have found that a roller coaster ride
just might help those suffering from a kidney stone. They say such rides help patients pass the stones with a 70 percent success rate.
David Wartinger led the study. He found that where the person sits on the roller coaster can make a big difference. He said, “ In the pilot study, sitting in the last car of the roller coaster showed about a 64 percent pass rate. Sitting in the first few cars only had a 16 percent success rate.
It also mattered where the stones were located in the kidney. The researchers found that stones located in the upper part of the kidney model were passed 100 percent.
When it comes to passing kidney stones, not all roller coasters are equal. The researchers used 174 kidney stones of different shapes, sizes and weights to see if each model worked on the same ride and on two other roller coasters. They found that Big Thunder Mountain was the only one that worked. The other two coasters both failed the test. Wartinger said the other rides were too fast and too violent. The movement forced the stones against the side of the kidney. He said that the ideal(理想的) roller coaster is rough and quick with some twists and turns.
Wartinger thinks roller coaster rides could also be used as a preventative measure. He said that a yearly ride on a roller coaster could even prevent stones from developing. “You need to notice the warnings before going on a roller coaster,” he said. “ If you have a kidney stone, but are otherwise healthy and meet the requirements of the ride, patients should try it.
He adds that it’s definitely a lower cost alternative to other treatments. And riding a roller coaster is definitely more fun!
According to the text, passing kidney stones is .
A. careless B. exciting C. interesting D. painful
Which of the following benefits people with kidney stone most
Sitting in the first car of a roller coaster
Sitting in the middle cars of a roller coaster
Sitting in big roller coasters with doctor’s care
Sitting in rough and fast roller coasters with twists and turns
What’s Wartinger’s attitude to riding roller coasters for people having a kidney stone
A. Worried B. Negative C. Supportive D. Skeptical
What would be the best title for the text
A. Some treatments of kidney stones B. Advantages of riding roller coasters
C. Roller coasters can help pass kidney stones D. Kidney stones can be cured by riding roller coasters

A new study has found that all dogs have different personalities—even dogs of the same breed (品种). Elinor Karlsson studies genetics(遗传) at the University of Massachusetts. She co-wrote a report about the study, which appeared recently in the publication Science.
Karlsson said, “Every dog really is an individual,” noting that there is “a huge amount of difference” even between dogs that look the same.
At a New York dog park, dog owners talked about the different characteristics of their pets. Elizabeth Kelly owns an English springer spaniel. She called her dog friendly, but also “kind of the queen bee.” In other words, her dog likes to act like it is in charge of other dogs. Suly described her yellow Labrador as “calm, lazy and shy.”
The idea of dog breeds is quite recent. Around 160 years ago, humans began to breed dogs to have certain physical qualities, such as fur, color and ear shape.
Karlsson said her aim was to learn how much a dog’s breed affects their behavior. The answer Breed does not decide an individual dog’s personality.
Karlsson’s team gathered information from 18,000 dog owners and studied the genetic code of over 2,000 dogs. The researchers found that some qualities are based on genetics. However, it is not sure that two dogs of the same breed will behave in the same way. For example, huskies and beagles, may be more likely to howl—or make a long, loud barking sound. But many of these dogs do not howl, as owner observations showed.
What do we know about Karlsson’s report
A.She wrote it by herself. B.It was published in Science. C.She finished it after graduation. D.It is of little value to her study. 33.What does the underlined “the queen bee” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A.A bee that behaves busily. B.A dog whose name is Queen.
C.A bee that serves the whole group. D.A dog acting as if it is the most important. 34.What is the purpose of Elinor Karlsson’s study
To help dog owners learn about their dogs better.
To prove dog breeds determine their personalities.
To study the tie between dog breeds and behaviors.
To show different dogs have different personalities. 35.What does the author want to tell us in the last paragraph
A.All the dogs can make a long, loud barking. B.Dogs of the same breed can behave differently. C.Dogs’ owners may observe their pets carelessly. D.Huskies and beagles are not the same dog breed.

I was lacking in everything needed to start a new friendship.
My parents moved to the town when they decided to look for new jobs but they didn’t realize I was really hurt when I said goodbye to my old friends. It felt awful to be a new student in the school and when my classmates were chatting, what I could do was to be caught up in my thoughts watching the clouds outside the window. I was not good at math or history; nor was I good at drawing or dancing. I was shy and timid(胆小的). I had a few friends back at my hometown and it seemed that they were the only ones who I could be friends with for my whole life. I felt I had achieved a point of saturation( 饱 和 ) with regard to having friends and I could make no further addition to my friends list. I was ashamed of myself, so I believed I deserved(应受) no notice from others until Emily came to my world.
Emily was fearless, outspoken and easy to go. She was everything I was not and I was too shy to come out of my shell. I met Emily in school almost every day and ye I never talked to her. We were in the same class but we were like poles apart. How I wished I could be like her or at least be a friend of hers!
It was another ordinary day. I was on the school bus back home, when I got up to get down the bus, my schoolbag was stuck in the armrest( 扶 手 ). I didn’t notice it and stood up with all my strength.
Unfortunately, my schoolbag was torn apart and all the contents fell on the ground. I knelt down to pick them up. Suddenly, I saw a hand passing me some of the books.
注意: 1.续写词数应为 100 左右;
请按如下格式作答。
I looked up and found it was Emily who was helping me.
