Several years ago, I was living in New York and working for an airline, so I couldn’t go home for Christmas. I did have Christmas celebrations with my colleagues, but in my heart I was sad because I couldn’t be with my family. However, one particular Christmas was different. I was lucky. I had a few days off, which meant I could stay with my family at Christmas.

When Christmas morning came, I was woken by a small hand rubbing my face. “Dad, Merry Christmas,” was all my younger son had time to say. He seemed to be racing against time. I knew he and his brother were eagerly hunting for gifts. I got downstairs just in time to see the two little boys’ faces as they looked at the toy rockets Santa Claus had left them. I realized that Christmas was a magical time for children, with their deep belief in the amazing power of Santa Claus. At first, their fingers touched the toys almost shyly. When this inspection had been completed, the two boys were satisfied that the gifts had really been delivered by Santa Claus and dragged everything into the center of the living room.

Delight flooded the room. As their mother began giving out more gifts, I smiled to myself, wondering how my surprised gifts would be received this year. Having spent so many Christmases away from home, I had made sure this time to get plenty of gifts for the children. My wife and I hid them in secret places but the children were excellent detectives and found all of them. They happily opened the parcels, constantly thanking Santa Claus for his kindness and for knowing what they wanted. But I didn’t receive a single gift. They must have forgotten my existence because I had been absent at Christmas for all these years.

I have to admit that I was disappointed.Then my younger son ran to me and asked me to admire one of his gifts, which he turly believed had been carefully selected by Santa Claus. He said he would happily share some of his gifts and allow me to choose which I wanted. I thanked him from the bottom of my heart, still feeling disappointed.

Then my wife walked up to me. It seemed she had guessed how I felt. She asked me to look at the Christmas tree which was decorated with so many boxes. I thought she was showing off her efforts at decorating the tree. However, she took off a small box and passed it to me, smiling and saying it was for me. I opened it and saw a note which read “How could we ever forget about you Merry Christmas.” Under the note was a beautiful watch, ticking these precious moments away. I was moved to tears.
