At first, Michael Surrell didn't see the black smoke or flames shooting from the windows of his neighbor's home. He had just parked around the corner from his own house when he got a call from his daughter: “The house next door is on fire!” He went to look. That's when he saw an old woman crying outside.
“The baby's in there!” she cried. Though the fire department had been called, Surrell, then 64,ran inside without hesitation
(犹豫). Entering the burning house was like “running into a bucket of black paint,” Surrell says. The thick smoke burned his eyes and made it impossible to breathe. The conditions would have been dangerous for anyone, but for Surrell, who had lung disease, they were life—threatening(威胁生命的)
After a few minutes in the smoke—filled house, he retreated (后退)outside to catch his breath. “Where is Tiara ” he
asked desperately.
“The second floor,” the old woman shouted back.
Taking a deep breath, Surrell went in a second time. Because the house had a similar layout to his, he found the stairs and made it to the second floor.
“Baby girl, where are you ”
His throat and lungs burned as if he'd breathed fire instead of the smoke in the air. He couldn't open his eyes. All he could hear was the crackling(破裂声)of burning wood. Then a soft sound came out. Still unable to see, Surrell fell to his knees on the hot wood floor and climbed toward the sound, feeling around for any sign of the girl.
Finally, he touched something. A shoe, then an ankle. He pulled the baby toward him. Her body was weak and she wasn't breathing. He carried her into his arms and ran blindly into the blackness. The next thing he knew, he was at the front door, then outside.
Why was the old woman crying outside
A. She lost the baby in the fire. B. The baby was hurt in the fire.
C. The baby was in the burning house. D. She couldn't call the fire department.
What can be learned from the first two paragraphs
Surrell's daughter worked in a fire department.
Surrell would probably have been killed by the fire.
The smoke blanketed(笼罩)Surrell's house from next door.
A bucket of black paint blocked Surrell's way to the house.
How did Surrell find the baby on the second floor
A. By searching on his knees. B. By opening the back door.
C. By shouting repeatedly. D. By turning on the light.
Which of the following best describes Surrell
A. Determined and patient. B. Independent and devoted.
C. Generous and reliable. D. Brave and caring.
C
“Your mind is a garden; your thoughts are the seeds. The harvest( 收 获 ) can either be flowers or weeds,” William Wordsworth wrote. In the above quote, William suggests that the process of gardening mirrors human life. Depending on what we “plant” in our lives, we bloom (生长茂盛) or don’t. Before you start to work in your garden, it’s necessary to have a vision for it. Thinking of what you want to grow in your garden and how to lay it out(布局) is a good first step in making your vision a fruitful(硕果累累的) reality. In life, you should consider what you want to create and what you want to achieve, because your mind-garden is like the white paper and the possibilities are endless.
Regardless of(不管) what you choose to plant, poor soil isn’t suitable for growth. This is why gardeners take the time and energy to upgrade the soil before planting. So, creating the right soil is important to the realization of your goals and dreams. Fortunately, there are countless ways to make your personal bedrock(牢固基础) better. Getting an education is one of the most effective ways, which can help you enrich your life’s soil.
You don’t have to be an enthusiastic gardener to understand the meaning of “You harvest what you sow.” When a gardener wants tomatoes, they just need to plant tomato seeds. It’s a very clear act that produces an expected result. Each of us has the power to decide which “life seeds” to plant. For example, if you plant ill seeds, it’s likely that you’ll experience pain in return. Contrarily, if you plant seeds of kindness and understanding, your life will bloom with happiness and love.
A gardener’s truly hard work begins after the seeds are in the ground because a garden requires a lot of care and attention.
Regular watering and weeding are required for a healthy garden. So, to ensure your dreams take root, you should be devoted, aware, and present. After countless hours and energy spent, the crops have grown well and are finally ready to be harvested.
What is important before gardeners break ground in their gardens
Receiving some training in planting.
Drawing up a good plan for their gardens.
Having the courage to accept the worst outcome.
Doing research on the common local garden plants.
What is compared to getting education by the author
A. Improving the condition of the soil. B. Growing your most favorable plants.
C. Taking care of the plants in your garden. D. Selecting proper goals in gardening work.
What does the author want to express in Paragraph 3
Your knowledge of planting will make you a successful gardener.
Your experience can help you understand plants better.
Your choice of soil is an important part in your gardening.
Your quality of life depends on your positive action.
What’s the best title of the passage
A. Improvement of Planting Skills B. How to Become a Qualified Gardener
C. How to Achieve Your Dreams and Goals D. The Mystery of Harvesting Abundant Crop
D
With the advancement in AI technology, people are debating the boundary between robot and man: Will robots become more intelligent and eventually replace humans Rather, what we really need to worry about is actually “men being forced to become machines”.
The tasks of takeout riders are controlled by an invisible hand— the intelligent distribution system. “To make the riders
more focused on food delivery, this system replaces our human logic to the maximum extent possible.” The riders don’t need to think but have to follow the guide of the system. All they have to do is riding as fast as possible. The navigation (导航) system charts the “best route”—to go over an overpass, through a fence, or even on the wrong side of the road—which, of course, promises the shortest delivery time. That is why these riders have to race against time as they over-speed, run red lights and go on the wrong road; they have to be faster, and faster. Their actions may be against the traffic law, but they are pushed by the pressure of “system time”. Takeout riders are just individuals who labor with their time, and they can’t go against the “system time”, so all they have to do is speeding. The riders’ physical conditions and the weather are completely invisible to the “intelligent distribution system”.
The scariest part of the system is that it is not only the platform, but the riders themselves that push them to go faster and faster. Every order they’ve delivered has been uploaded to the cloud data of the platform, and the algorithm ( 算 法 ) will calculate the speed limit of the riders. When everyone gets faster and faster, the algorithm will speed them up accordingly.
Of course, each one of us can be a number in statistics, but “a person” can never be just a number. Algorithms can be cold, but human-beings are not. Data, as a tool, should serve people, but not enslave them.
Technology keeps moving forward, but it also should be moving toward kindness.
According to the passage, what can we learn about the technology
Robots has become more intelligent and taken place of humans.
AI technology are quickening takeout riding with navigation system.
The navigation system hasn’t yet mapped out the best route for these riders.
Algorithms will speed takeout riders up appropriately depending on weather.
What does the underlined word “chart” in paragraph 2
A. To make a map of B. To follow the progress of
C. To plan an action of D. To be ranked on a list of
What do the take-out riders often NOT do to ensure the shortest delivery time
A. Over-speeding B. Running red lights
C. Going on the wrong road D. Keeping traffic rules
According to the last two paragraphs, what attitude should we hold towards technology
A. Supportive B. Cautious C. Negative D. Doubtful

One hot day, we were going to the ball field for a big game. "How hot it is today!" I said. "It is too far to walk to the ball field on a day like this. We'd better take a bus."
"Yes, it is hot," said Mike. "So let's go by bus. I think it is all right for me to take a dime(十分硬币) for the bus."
I followed him into his house. He put his hand into a small bag hanging on the door. Then he brought out some money.
After taking one dime, he put the rest of the money back.
"Who owns the money " I asked. "Is it all right for you to take money from the bag "
"Yes," he smiled. "The money belongs to every one of us in the family. When we children earn money, we put it into the bag. Father puts in the most. Then when we need money, we can take it from the bag. The money bag is Mother's idea. She thinks it will teach us to spend money carefully and to know its real value."
"Doesn't anyone know how much you take " I asked.
"Oh, no," said Mike. "Mother says we must trust each other."
"But couldn't you take out more than you need for the bus " I asked. "I could," answered Mike.
"But then there might not be enough money for Jane and Fred. Someone in our family is always needing something. If I take more than I need, there won't be enough to go around."
