Beijing Opera
Beijing Opera is the national treasure of China. It has a long history, dating back to the late 18th century. It combines acting, talking, singing, dancing, music and acrobatics. Actors play one of the four roles, sheng, male roles, dan, female roles, jing, male roles with brightly painted faces and chou, clown roles.
In the old days, Peking Opera was performed on open-air stages, in streets, markets, teahouses and outside temples. Therefore, the music had to be played loudly and the actors had to sing in sharp voices to be heard clearly. Besides, there was no light at that time, the performers wore brightly coloured costumes to be seen clearly.
What’s more, the stage is very simple and there are many symbols in Beijing Opera. Many body movements can represent/stand for/symbolize actions such as opening a door, climbing a hill, going upstairs or rowing a boat. For example, when a lady is riding in a carriage, the performer actually walks with a flag on each side. Four generals and four soldiers represent/stand for/symbolize an army of thousands. Therefore, symbols play a big role in Beijing Opera.
Since Beijing Opera is an important part of our culture, it is our duty to protect, inherit and spread Beijing Opera!

Listening Task 2
Listen to a dialogue about Beijing Opera and answer the questions.
1.Who went to see Beijing Opera
2.How did the person feel about it
3.What didn’t the person understand
Discussion
Beijing Operas are not so popular these days. They are not catchy(引人注意的), hard to understand, and even considered harsh(刺耳的) to the ear. Do you think we should preserve and protect it How can we make it more popular and interesting
Discussion
1. We can combine/marry Beijing Opera with pop music just like the song One Night in Beijing does, making Beijing Opera more popular with young people.
2. As we know, a Beijing Opera tells an interesting story in history. As long as we have a better understanding about these cultural background information, we may have a deeper interest in it.
3. Technically speaking, the music of Beijing Opera can be turned down so that the singing of performers can be heard more clearly.
