Approaching 96, at an age when most are lonely and in poor health, Olga Murray, full of energy, has been eagerly planning a trip to Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, while keeping in contact with hundreds of friends around the world. How can she be in such good shape Is it her good genes (Her mother lived to 98.) Her daily salads and three times a week workouts Or could it have something to do with the retired lawyer’s second career as the founder of a nonprofit organization
Scientists increasingly are finding that the answer—call it living with purpose, finding meaning in life or just engaging with something larger than yourself—can be particularly healthy pursuits. Living with a sense of purpose can improve the quality of those final years. Murray offers a vivid example of how to create a sense of meaning.
Murray’s story began in 1984, after she had worked 37 years as a lawyer and was starting to think about retirement. At 59, while traveling in Nepal, Murray found herself amazed by the children there. “They were poor beyond anything I had ever experienced,” she recalled in self published memoirs(自传)years later, “yet they were the most joyful little kids anywhere on earth.” She wanted to put the rest of her life into helping educate Nepalese children.
Returning to Nepal the next year, she met Allan Aistrope, then a volunteer English teacher at the country’s only orphanage(孤儿院). The two combined forces, beginning with organizing college scholarships for four of the orphans. After another five years, they had launched the Nepal Youth Foundation(NYF), which by then was supporting several hundred scholarship students and raising 60 homeless children. In 1994, the two hired Som Paneru, a former scholarship student, as executive director. Murray has taken several steps to make sure the NYF will survive after the unavoidable loss of her presence. She handed over the presidency to Paneru in 2012. Now, she is busy as usual, leading lots of fundraising campaigns.
4.How did Nepalese children impress Murray when she traveled in Nepal at 59
A.They were eager to receive education.
B.They lived a very poor but happy life.
C.They liked to communicate with foreigners.
D.They were terribly interested in her memoirs.
5.What did Murray do first when she traveled to Nepal the second time
A.She helped four orphans go to college.
B.She started the Nepal Youth Foundation.
C.She volunteered to act as an English teacher.
D.She sent 60 homeless children to the orphanage.
6.Which words can best describe Murray
A.Confident and helpful.
B.Energetic and selfless.
C.Creative and professional.
D.Kind hearted and flexible.
7.What’s the writing purpose of this text
A.To attract more tourists to Nepal.
B.To advise people to change their jobs.
C.To inspire people to live a purposeful life.
D.To encourage people to exercise regularly.
C
Coral reefs (珊瑚礁) are full of varieties of sea life, including fish. Some fish are more attractive to humans than others, and their semblance could be influencing how we decide which species to protect.
To understand the relationship between fish beauty standards and conservation needs, researchers showed 481 photographs of reef fishes to 13,000 members of the public. With those data, they then trained a computer model to make following predictions for an additional 4,400 photographs of 2,417 of the most common reef fish species. They next compared the aesthetic (美感) rating of each species with other characteristics, including evolutionary history, distinctiveness from other fish, “ecological originality”(which includes traits such as diet, habitat, body size and behaviors), conservation status and importance to fisheries.
After processing the numbers, researchers found that the fish humans rated as the most beautiful — those with bright, colorful, round bodies — were also less ecologically and evolutionarily distinct. Prettier fish were also more likely to be listed as species of “least concern” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature(IUCN) Red List. On the contrary, the fish that humans found to be the least attractive were the most ecologically and evolutionarily distinct, and they were more likely to be listed as “threatened” on the IUCN Red List. Unattractive species also tended to be more important to commercial fisheries, which puts them at higher risk for overfishing.
At a time when conservation funding and energy are limited, uglier fish are likely being overshadowed by more beautiful fish, which could have serious consequences for coral reef ecosystems. “The less attractive species have the highest ecological distinctiveness, and thus provide the highest diversity of ecological functions,”they write in the paper. “We thus conclude that the raised extinction risk of the less attractive fish species might also have great effects on reef ecosystem functioning. To minimize the influence of aesthetic biases (偏见), scientists, conservation groups and policymakers may need to change how they communicate about wildlife. Raising awareness of the important roles that uglier fish play in reef ecosystems could help them obtain more support.”
8.What does the underlined word “semblance” in the first paragraph most probably mean
A.Size. B.Appearance.
C.Living style. D.Growth speed.
9.How did the researchers carry out their study
A.By analyzing aesthetic ratings of fish.
B.By observing fish among coral reefs.
C.By referring to previous similar studies.
D.By conducting an online questionnaire.
10.What do the researchers suggest we do
A.Make laws to punish those who overfish.
B.Build natural reserves worldwide for uglier fish.
C.Go all out to have people’s aesthetic levels improved.
D.Educate people on the ecological importance of uglier fish.
11.What’s the best title for the text
A.Ugly Fish Also Need Love
B.Appearance Matters Most to Fish
C.Ugly Fish Live Shorter Lives
D.Coral Reefs Rely Heavily on Fish
D
What if we had the power to control time, instead of moving from the past to the present to the future What if we could jump, loop and travel through time in a machine What if we could go wherever and whenever we pleased
This ability would allow us to witness historic wonders, change decisions and see people from the past. We could right wrongs and stop wars from starting.
The mysterious puzzle of time has kept people debating its nature for hundreds of years. Science fiction writers have turned it into imaginative stories. Some scientists have even attempted to explain it using math. This math tries to make the dream of time travel come true.
The scientist Albert Einstein said that time and space are one thing. He called it “space time”. Euclid said that there are three dimensions in space: height, width and depth. A scientist named Hermann Minkowski added time as the fourth dimension.
Einstein introduced two ideas that have led to theories about the possibility of time travel. The first is relativity. The idea of relativity is that the force of gravity causes space to bend, which causes time to twist. The second idea focuses on special relativity. The idea is that a traveler moving super fast through flat space time will enter the future. Einstein considered time “relative” because it is measured based on where we are on Earth or in space.
Stephen Hawking is a famous scientist. He believes that a time machine will never be built. If it were possible, he thinks we would already know. If a time machine could be built, how come no one from the future has invaded us
The first science fiction story with this theme is The Clock That Went Backward by Edward P. Mitchell, which was published in 1881. Since then, thousands of books, films and television shows have explored the idea of time travel, in which some tools such as phones, watches, photographs and old books take travelers backward and forward.
Will time travel ever happen Who knows! The most important is to keep your eyes open and have a sense of wonder.
12.What is the author’s purpose in writing the first paragraph
A.To show time and space are connected.
B.To show people’s interest in time travel.
C.To draw readers’ attention to time travel.
D.To make people believe time travel is possible.
13.Which of the following statements could Einstein agree with
A.Time travel is possible in the future.
B.People can’t move faster than light.
C.Time travel is against scientific rules.
D.Space time is not a real thing in theory.
14.What is Paragraph 7 mainly about
A.The first science fiction story.
B.Some tools used in time travel.
C.Edward P. Mitchell, the pioneer.
D.Different works about time travel.
15.What is the writer’s attitude toward time travel
A.Cautious. B.Pessimistic.
C.Sceptical. D.Optimistic.

Dolphins are social and 36 (intelligence) animals. Like the way humans maintain relationships by hugging or giving a handshake, dolphins breathe together at the same time when they come up from the water for air. This kind of act 37 (be) of great importance for creating social connections. But sharing the same air and area also spreads a contagious (接触传染的) and deadly disease among dolphins.
Janet Mann researches dolphins at Georgetown University. She and other 38 (scientist) are trying to understand the virus. They 39 (discover) it in the water off the American states of Virginia and Maryland some years ago. It is now spreading to other Atlantic coast dolphins. There was an outbreak of the virus from 2013 to 2015 in 40 almost20,000 dolphins died. The number of dolphins 41 (wash) up on the coast from Florida to New York was about 2,000. Mann explains that the dolphin virus is in the lungs, much like how the COVID virus spreads in humans. When dolphins breathe together at the surface, they share respiratory droplets (飞沫).
Jacob Negrey who is 42 animal virus researcher from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine understands the spread of the dolphin virus by 43 (follow) dolphin social activities. He studies not only the biology of the virus, but also how weakened dolphin populations act together. Since dolphins are very playful animals, they often swim so close that they touch fins, much 44 humans holding hands. They 45 (frequent) swim in large groups.

My husband, Donald, took our daughter Sarah out for some ice cream the night before driving her to college. As they were walking back to the car, they saw a young man sitting on the ground and giving his puppy a cone.
“A cute dog,” Donald said as they walked by. “A free dog,” the young man replied. Donald asked him what he meant by that and the man explained. He was moving away from Vermont and did not think the travel would be good for the dog. He had raised her from a small puppy. The man said she was a 6 month old cross between the Doberman and the Labrador named Rhubarb. Donald took his phone number. The rest, as they say, is history.
Rhubarb was a sweet dog and very friendly and loved everyone. Whenever someone came to the house, she was always happy. She also got along with Willie, an older Samoyed we had. Willie was not well and died about a year later, but, fortunately, Rhubarb’s company helped him keep going for longer than that if he had been alone. But the interesting thing about Rhubarb was that she never barked. She would sometimes get excited when she saw a chipmunk (花栗鼠) and make a little crying sound.
One hot night when she was about 4 years old, we went to bed with the windows open and the doors unlocked. At about 3 a.m., I woke up to the sound of Rhubarb barking. I woke Donald and we got out of bed.
Rhubarb was coming toward us. We turned on the lights and noticed the door to the kitchen was open. Then we saw the door leading into the house from the garage was also open. We quickly locked all the doors, and we did not get any sleep that night. It was deep into the night, so we didn’t call the police.
Paragraph 1:
The next day we noticed there was cigarette ash on the floor.

Paragraph 2:
My purse was right next to the door.

故填is。

One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
The next day we noticed there was cigarette ash on the floor. Actually, it was a thief who entered our kitchen and garage. Much to our relief, thanks to Rhubarb, the thief stole nothing. I called the police to report the break in. I also told them nothing had been taken, but they sent a police officer over to talk with us anyway. In fact, recently many local homes had been broken in on the weekend. Most people’s wallets and purses had been stolen.
Paragraph 2:
My purse was right next to the door. However, Rhubarb had scared the thief away before he or she could steal it. When the police officer left, he said we should reward Rhubarb with a big steak dinner. Rhubarb lived to be almost 12 years old, but that night was the only time she barked in her entire life. Fortunately, she never saw the need to warn us of any other danger. We were very thankful to Rhubarb. We loved her like a member of the family.
