As the only woman competing in para ice hockey (残奥冰球) at Beijing 2022,Yu Jing,at the age of 38, caught people’s eyes in Team China’s 6-0 round-robin win over Italy on Tuesday.
Yu played over five minutes in the game which fittingly took place on International Women’s Day, becoming only the third woman in history to ever compete in the Paralympic hockey program, following Norwegians Brit Mjaasund Oeyen and Lena Schroeder in 1994 and 2018, respectively.
Para ice hockey is a mixed-gender sport, but world championships and Paralympic Games still tend to feature all-male teams due to the sport’s physically demanding nature.
Yu has had a passion for sports since she was a kid-even with polio (小儿麻痹症) causing a disability in her left leg when she was little.
In 2019, Yu took up para ice hockey. Similar to wheelchair basketball, para ice hockey involves players with various lower body disabilities sitting on sledges while pushing themselves along the ice with hockey sticks in both hands.
“It was hard at the beginning. It’s quite difficult to maintain balance while sitting on thin blades (冰刃) and controlling the puck,” Yu said.
She developed a serious disease on her right wrist because she pushed herself too hard. Icing her wrist has become a daily routine, not to mention frequent treatment for wounds on her shoulders and back.
However, nothing deters the sports lover. “In this sport, crashes are unavoidable. I am ready for whatever challenges come my way on the ice,” she said.
Yu expects to see more of her gender follow in her footsteps. “Women with disabilities all over the world, I hope they know it's not impossible, and I hope they see this as encouragement,”she said.
24. Why did Yu Jing catch people’s eyes in para ice hockey at the Paralympic Games

C. Yu was the only woman competing in the para ice hockey.

Venice sinking is no new news, but the low-lying Italian city is now more than 85 percent underwater after rainy weather with severe flooding has put the city in danger over the last few days.
The high waters, known as “acqua alta”, are the highest in 50 years, having reached 1. 87 meters, or just over six feet. The serious flooding this week is almost as high as record flood in 1972, reported to be the 2nd worst in history by Associated Press. A popular destination for travelers, the city’s most famous landmarks, including St. Mark’s Square, are underwater.
“Venice is still charming in the rain, but flooding is a different story,” Mindi and Daryl Hirsch of tell with Newsweek. “There’s nothing charming about walking through three feet of cold, smelly water. This type of water makes rain boots and galoshes useless.”
The travel-blogging couple had to walk in waist-high water after dinner and said that the situation felt dangerous. “We recommend that any travelers who experience similar flooding take warnings seriously. The city of Venice sounds an alarm when flooding is upcoming with the number of tones indicating the expected water level. This is the time to take cover and wait for the water to move back,” the couple said. “We think we’ll hear the alarm in our dreams for the next few years.”
Marco Amorico, president of Access Italy, a luxury tour company operating in Venice, recommends travelers avoid the flooded city until the water level returns to normal and to keep a close watch on the weather forecasts. “If plans to travel to Venice are immediate, I would tour around to Milan or Turin (where you can also enjoy Alba for their white truffles). If travel dates are more than a week away, I would monitor the situation and start looking at other cities like Rome and Florence. Italy is well connected by train and travel times are relatively short.”
28. What do we know about the severe flooding in Venice this week
A. The whole city has been flooded under water.
B. All the people have moved out of the city because of danger.
C. It is the most serious flooding in Venice in history.
D. The causes of the flooding are both low-lying location and rainy days.
29. What do Mindi and Daryl Hirsch mean
A. Although Venice is flooded, the city is beautiful for travelers.
B. Travelers will have a different exciting experience in Venice.
C. They are always concerned about the situation in the years to come.
D. They have no choice but to leave the city of Venice.
30. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Travelers are forced to go to Milan and Turin.
B. Cities except Venice are also good choices for tourists.
C. The water level will return to normal very soon.
D. It is still easy and safe for tourists to go to Venice by train.
31. Where can you probably read the passage
A. A news website. B. A science book.
C. A geography book. D. A tour guide book.
D
Can exercise during childhood protect you against memory loss many years later Exercise early in life seems to have lifelong benefits for the brain, in rats at least.
“This is an animal study, but it shows that physical activity at a young age is very important — not just for physical development, but for the whole lifelong track of cognitive (认知的) development during ageing,” says Martin of the University of Toronto, Canada. “In humans, it may put off the appearance of Alzheimer’s (阿兹海默症) symptoms, possibly to the point of preventing them.”
Martin’s team divided 80 young male rats into two equal groups, and placed running wheels in the cages of one group for a period of six weeks. Around four months later — when the rats had reached middle age — the team taught all the rats to connect an electric shock with being in a specific box. When placed in the box, they froze with fear.
Two weeks later, the team tested the rats in three situations: exactly the same box in the same room, the same box with the room arranged differently, and a completely different box in a different room.
The rats without access to a running wheel when they were young now froze the same percentage of times in each of these situations, suggesting they couldn’t remember which one was dangerous. But those that had been able to run in their youth froze 40 to 50 percent less in both changed box settings.
“The results suggest the amount of physical activity when we’re young, at least for rats, has influence on brain and cognitive health — in the form of better memories — when we’re older,” says Arthur Kramer of Northeastern University in Boston, who has found that, in humans, exercise improves the growth of new brain cells.
32. The study shows that______.
using the running wheels is of benefit to the rats’ growth
physical activity is important for physical health
exercise when young can prevent memory loss when older in rats
physical activity can prevent human’s Alzheimer’s symptoms
33. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. exercise B. development C. benefit D. study
34. How are Paragraph 3 and 4 mainly developed
A. By analyzing causes. B. By giving an example.
C. By showing differences. D. By describing the process.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards the animal study
A. Surprised. B. Critical (批判性的). C. Objective. D. Doubtful.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2. 5分, 满分12. 5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
What is the best sleep position for your health
It’s difficult to control what sleeping position we naturally fall into, as our body will subconsciously fall into the most comfortable position for us. However, some positions are better for you than others and some could hold back your health and well-being. 36
If you sleep on your side
More than 60 per cent of people sleep on their side. Often our body naturally moves to this position, which is linked to when we were in the womb in the foetal (胎儿的) position. 37 It offers a number of benefits to your body, from promoting healthy spine alignment (脊椎对齐) which can help to prevent back pain to reducing heartburn and snoring (打鼾).
If you sleep on your back
Lying on your back is the second most popular sleeping position and offers just as many benefits as side sleeping. When you’re sleeping on your back, it’s easy to keep alignment and to also evenly distribute your weight. 38
If you sleep on your stomach
Sleeping on your stomach is the least common sleeping position. 39 And those who sleep on their stomach could put themselves at risk of a less restful night’s sleep. The stomach offers the least amount of back support and can increase pressure on the spine which may cause pain once you wake up.
40 You should consider various factors such as if you snore or suffer sleep problems, or if you often have back and neck pain. Side sleeping has been noted as the best position for the body, so this is probably one to try and get into the habit of trying, but again, it all depends on you.
A. This also helps to prevent any neck and back pain.
B. Sleeping on your side is probably the best position.
C. There are more negatives to this position compared to positives.
D. Side sleeping would be particularly beneficial for older people.
E. Determining the sleeping position for you is personal preference.
F. This is mostly likely because it is one of the most comfortable sleeping positions.
G. Here, this article reveals exactly how your sleep position is affecting your health.
