Matthew has retired. He used to be working in a sawmill(锯木厂). Cutting and piling wood for 8 hours a day had caused his fingers to be injured and bleed all year round. Outside his job, he enjoyed watching baseball games and he was glad that he had more time for it after he retired. Matthew would take time to show them some basic skills to some slow learners and took the trouble to repeat each detail until the players were skillful. What Matthew taught was deeply rooted in the boys' hearts and they could play wonderfully in the races.
Time flew. Matthew thought he was too old to teach them anything. It was time for him to leave. However, the boys told Matthew that his fighting spirit had long been part of their team. Nearly everyone on the team learned to expect a little more from themselves as long as Matthew was there.

Two car manufacturing companies in the US have been developing self-driving taxis, sometimes called “robot axis”. Before August, their cars have had a human in the driver’s seat, ready to take over if there was a problem, and they could only drive in specific areas, at certain times. In early August, they weren’t required to have safety drivers in their cars. They are programmed to do everything on their own, including obeying the rules of the road, following speed limits, and avoiding people and other cars.
The move was a big step for self-driving cars, and many people were excited about the change. But almost immediately, there were problems coming along. A self-driving car crashed into a fire truck, causing a person seriously injured. Later, another one failed to work in the middle of across road, causing a traffic jam. As a result, the two companies were told to take half of its robot axis off the roads.
In one recent example, a self-driving car got stuck in wet concrete(混凝土) because it didn't know that wet concrete was different from a road. In another case, a robotaxi killed a dog. The self-driving system knew the dog was there, but didn't know how to avoid it. Most people believe that self-driving cars aren't ready for the real world. Those who are upset about self-driving cars had found an unusual way to be against them: putting traffic cones(路锥) on the hoods(引擎盖) of robot axis, which can confuse the cars' driving system rand leave them unable to move.
In spite of the problems, both companies are planning to expand their self-driving car service to other cities. One of them says its driverless system will soon be able to work in any city, on any kind of vehicle. Though the quality of self-arriving cars is improving, it's likely to be awhile before most people view them as safe.

Tall, long-necked giraffes are famous for their spots which are believed to help the animals hide from their enemies. Just like no two humans have the same fingerprints, each giraffe has its own special pattern of spots. However, a Tennessee zoo made headlines recently after it welcome done of the world's most uncommon giraffes.
On July 31, a baby giraffe was born at Brights Zoo with light brown fur which is a reticulated(网状的) giraffe, one of the four different kinds of giraffes. Unlike most giraffes, she was born without spots, a unique feature of the reticulated giraffe. At six feet tall, this baby giraffe is growing well under her mother's care. She shows typical baby giraffe behavior, such a seating rocks.
Experts said the young giraffe was the only single-colored reticulated giraffe living anywhere on the planet. The last time this happened was 1972 in Japan. A giraffe's pattern of spots is created when the animal is still growing inside its mother. That means that this giraffe will never have spots.
“The new giraffe might not have survived if she had been born in the wild. Being single-colored, she may not be able to hide quite as well,” said Mr. David Bright, who runs the zoo, “It will easily be a key target for poachers (偷猎者) because she's so unusual.”
Brights Zoo stressed that reticulated giraffes had already become imperiled. In 2018, they were officially listed as “threatened”. Thirty-five years ago, there were 36, 000 reticulated giraffes. Now, the number has, been cut by more than 50%. Only about 16, 000 reticulated giraffes remain.
This brown giraffe's birth is not only a rare and fascinating event, but also an opportunity to raise awareness about the challenges faced by giraffes in the wild. By supporting efforts like this, we can contribute to the conservation of these large creatures and ensure their survival for generations to come.

In a heartwarming event that has touched the nation, a police officer in Warren, Michigan, was considered as a true hero by saving the life of an 18-month-oldboy who had suddenly stopped breathing. This event happened on the evening of August 29 and has since touched the hearts of many.
Officer Brandan Fraser was on duty, focusing on speed and absent-minded driving, when he noticed a car speeding past him. What in the beginning seemed like a common traffic violation(违规) rapidly turned into a life-and-death crisis.
As Fraser came up to the car, he was met with a sad cry from a woman, who screamed, “We got a baby in here dying. Help! Help!” Both the woman and the man in the car were frightened as they handed over the baby boy, who appeared to be lifeless, not breathing and turning blue.
Rather than giving into the pressure of the moment, Fraser immediately sprang into action. He examined the baby and doubted that he might be choking(窒息). Fraser quickly positioned the baby on his forearm and performed a series of back blows to force any obstruction(阻塞物) from the child's airway out.
However, the baby still showed no signs of breathing. Fraser's hear traced, but his training kicked in here. After making sure the baby's airway was clear, he then continued to perform CPR on the baby. His hands pressed the baby's tiny chest and at the same time, he blew some air into the baby's mouth to help make his heartbeat again. Fraser continued these life-saving efforts tirelessly, knowing that every second counted.
Surprisingly, the baby began to breathe once more. Fraser described the moment, saying, “The child started breathing, and you saw that color started coming back around his lips. You realized that something happened here, and we're heading in the right direction.”

W: This history of plastic is no longer than you might expect. In fact, the first man-made plastic was made over a hundred years ago. It was discovered both by an Englishman and an American in the same year, but it was the American who first developed it on a large scale during the 1860s. Everybody was excited by this new material because it was cheap. Poor workers were able to buy clothes made of plastic. This kind of clothes were uncomfortable, but they were easy to wash. The poor workers could clean them every evening with just soap and water. Moreover, it was easy to dry. Poor mothers, who had not been able to afford toys for their children, were now able to buy inexpensive ones made of plastic. However, plastic has one serious disadvantage.
