B 37. E 38. A 39. G 40. F
根据空前的“Building mental strength is similar to building physical strength. In just a few minutes each day, you can train your brain to think differently, manage your emotions, and behave productively.(增强精神力量与增强体力类似。每天只需几分钟,你就可以训练你的大脑以不同的方式思考,管理你的情绪,并表现得富有成效。)”可知,第一段总体是在讨论提高精神力量,空处为最后一句,应该总结本段并引出下段,后面都在讲提高精神力量的方法,因此B选项“With regular exercise, you’ll build your mental strength.(有规律的练习可以增强你的精神力量。)”说明练习可以增强精神力量,引出下一段的方法,因此承上启下,符合语境,故选B。
【37题详解】
空格处是本段主题句,由空后的“Think about three things you are grateful for in your life. It could be as simple as the clean water that you drink. Write in a gratitude journal, list the things you feel grateful for over dinner, or make it a habit to find what you’re thankful for before you go to bed. Over time, being grateful becomes a second nature.(想想你生命中感恩的三件事。它可以像你喝的干净的水一样简单。写一本感恩日记,在晚餐时列出你感激的事情,或者养成在睡觉前找到你感激的事情的习惯。久而久之,感恩就成了你的第二天性。)”可知,本段主题为通过把感恩变成一种习惯来改变思维方式,E选项“You can physically change your brain by making gratitude a habit.(你可以通过养成感恩的习惯来改变你的大脑。)”
根据空前句“It’s impossible to stay strong when you’re thinking about something that happened last week or horrible things going to happen tomorrow.(当你想到上周发生的事情或明天会发生的可怕的事情时,你不可能保持坚强。)”以及空后句“It’s therefore of great significance to be able to concentrate on the present.(因此,能够专注于当下是非常重要的。)”可知,这里在说明当下的重要性,唯一可以做出改变的时刻只有当下,A选项“The only time you can make changes is right now.(你唯一能做出改变的时间就是现在。)”
根据空处前一句“So when you’re sad, put your shoulders back and smile, and you’ll feel better.(所以当你难过的时候,把你的肩膀向后仰,微笑,你会感觉好一些。)”可知,要主动地寻求改变才会让自己感觉更好,G选项“Always remember feelings of confidence won’t come out of nowhere.(永远记住,自信的感觉不会凭空而来。)”
根据空处后一句“Feeling sorry for yourself and giving up after your first failure are just a few of the bad habits that could discourage you from building your mental strength.(自怨自艾,第一次失败就放弃,这些坏习惯会阻碍你建立自己的精神力量。)”可知,需要关注那些使你失去精神力量的坏习惯,F选项“Pay attention to the bad habits that keep you out of mental strength.(注意那些让你失去精神力量的坏习惯。)”

Recently our class had a heated discussion on whether the sea is worth exploring.Students hold different opinions about it.
Some assume sea exploration is not worthwhile, holding the opinion that it will pollute the sea. Those marine animals’ habitats are being destroyed, which will cause them to die out. However, others argue that the sea is worth exploring, which enables us to address the problem of energy shortages because of the growing population. Meanwhile, it is also beneficial to the scientific research like climate change.
Personally speaking, it’s rewarding to explore the sea for the benefit of future generations.Meanwhile,we should exploit the sea appropriately.
“What happened ” asked my mother, seeing us in low spirits. “Well,” my brother slowly began, “we hit the tennis ball too hard and too high and it went right through the school window”. “Oh, my goodness!” my mother exclaimed. After a short pause, her voice softened when she asked us if we had reported this to the school. Lips bitten, we shook our heads. “It will cost all of our pocket money”, I muttered. “But there is always something more important than money”, she said soothingly, patting me on the shoulder. Slowly lifting my head, I encountered my mother’s encouraging eyes and a decision was made.
The following morning my brother and I went to the headmaster’s office. Nervous and frightened, we inched into the office. There sat our stern-looking headmaster. “We have something to confess...”, we spilled our story with a hint of fear in our voices. He looked very somber and we were sure that the news was bad. Then he smiled, “I am proud of you kids for having the courage to tell me what happened”. He could see our relief as he continued, “Many windows had been broken, but you were the first ones to admit that you were responsible. For that, you don’t have to pay for the broken window, because honesty comes before anything else”.

Overlooking the Davis-Gant Varsity Soccer Field, a bed of overturned soil waits for
further development. In a few years, this area will become a natural habitat and a playground
for animals and residents. This peaceful area didn't appear naturally, but through planning and
action taken by Catlin Gabel's Tiny Forest project launched by teacher Patrick Walsh.
Forests typically take hundreds of years to be fully grown, with four stages of growth.
"Tiny forests shorten the time through the planting of all four layers, " Walsh explained. The
end result is a fast-growing, native forest in about 20 years. Over 600 plants from 43 species
will be planted in the tiny forest, the first one in Oregon.
Walsh was inspired to build a tiny forest after hearing about this idea, which emerged in
Japan and has taken hold in North America. He shared his vision with seniors in his class. The
seniors researched tiny forests and made a proposal resulting in Clean Water Services donating
60 trees and $ 5, 000 from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Armed with
these resources, Walsh and the students started working. "Something I didn't really expect was
the outpouring of students' enthusiasm. Seeing students from all grades volunteered to
contribute to the 'dirty work' really blew me away, " Walsh said.
Senior Megan Cover has been at the school since the first grade. "I'll graduate after
working on this project, which is surely sad, but it's really rewarding and great to be a part of
this project and do my bit. We're creating this educational space for many young kids, " Cover
said.
Walsh summed up his goal of the project, which is to build a place where students can enjoy and learn about nature. "The forest will obviously not solve climate change, but it would
deserve the efforts if the kids think about climate change and remember the importance of reforestation(重新造林)and trees when they look at the forest. "
24. What is special about tiny forests
A. They originated in North America. B. They are usually planted in schools.
C. They contain various types of trees. D. They become fully grown in a shorter time.
25. What surprised Walsh in the process of planting the tiny forest

Social distancing is not a new concept in the natural world, where infectious (传染的)
diseases are common. Through specialized senses animals can detect certain diseases and
change their behavior to avoid getting ill.
In 1966, while studying chimps ( 猩 猩 ) in a Tanzanian national park, zoologist Jane
Goodall observed a chimp named McGregor who had caught a highly infectious virus. His
fellow chimps attacked him and threw him out of the troop. In one instance, McGregor
approached chimps in a tree. He reached out a hand in greeting, but the others moved away
without a backward glance.
“For a full two minutes, old McGregor sat motionless, staring after them,” Goodall notes
in her 1971 book In the Shadow of Man. “It’s really not that different to how some societies
react today to such a tragedy.”
Not all animals are so aggressive toward their ailing neighbors. Sometimes it’s as simple
as avoiding those who may infect you.
When Kiesecker, a lead scientist in America, studied American bullfrog in the late 1990s,
he found that bullfrogs could not only detect a deadly smell of infection in other bullfrogs, but
healthy members actively avoided those that were sick. Bullfrogs rely on chemicals signals to
determine who is sick or not.
Caribbean lobsters also shun diseased members of their community, well before they
become infectious. It takes about eight weeks for lobsters infected with the deadly virus
Panulirus argus mininuceovirus to become dangerous to others. Normally social animals,
lobsters begin keeping away from the diseased as early as four weeks after infection – once the
lobsters can smell certain chemicals released by sick individuals.
Overall, it’s important to note that, unlike us, animals don’t realize if they stay home,
they might actually reduce the infection rate,” Kiesecker explains. “As humans, we have that
ability. It’s a big difference.”
28.What can we learn about the chimps from Goodall’s observation
A.They kept a distance from one another.
B.They became aggressive when infected.
C.The infected avoided contact with others.

Imagine a way to produce meat without killing animals. Instead of raising livestock on
farms, Uma Valeti, a cardiologist, and co-founder of Upside Foods, dreamed of a way to
“grow” meat by cultivating(培养) animal cells(细胞).
The idea for what’s now called “cultivated” meat came to Valeti when he was working
with heart attack patients at the Mayo Clinic more than 15 years ago, growing human heart
cells in a lab. It should be possible to grow meat with similar science, he realized. Scientists
could take cells from an animal by a needle biopsy(切片检查), place them in tanks, feed them
the nutrients they need to reproduce, including fats, sugar, amino acids and vitamins, and end
up with meat.
It has taken years of experimentation by a crew of biologists, biochemists and engineers to
turn that idea into a product ready to eat. Now the company is awaiting a greenlight from the
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to begin selling its first cultivated meat products,
including a chicken fillet (without bone).
After four years of talks with regulators at the FDA, Valeti expects this could happen “in
the very near future.” When it does, Upside’s production facility in Emeryville, California,
will be able to produce over 50,000 pounds of cultivated meat products per year.
For Valeti, the potential benefits of cultivated meat are too important not to try to
overcome the current obstacles. He sees a future with a better choice to the current system of
producing meat, and he’s determined to create it. Valeti says, at last, as a doctor he might have
been able to help a few thousand patients during his career. But, by taking the great step to

It can be tempting to wait until you feel ready to make a change. But waiting until you feel

When I was about ten years old, my brother and I received a wonderful gift — tennis
rackets and balls. We had never had the opportunity to play tennis, so this was exciting.
However, there was one problem — the small town we lived in did not have a tennis court.
One Sunday morning my brother said, “Hey, I’ve got an idea. Let’s take our tennis rackets
and balls to the school and hit the balls against the school building.”
“Great idea! Let’s go,” I agreed, not realizing what a lesson we would learn before the
experience was over.
When we got to the school ground, no one was around, so we began hitting our balls
against the side of the two-story brick building.
“I’ll hit it the first time,” my brother suggested, “then you hit it the next time. We’ll hit it
back and forth to each other.”
So we began taking turns hitting the ball, getting more confident with each stroke.
Actually, we became pretty good at returning the ball and we were hitting the ball higher and
faster each time.
Suddenly, the unthinkable happened — the ball got out of control and went crashing
through one of the upstairs windows.

We looked around and no one was in sight — except there was an old man stting on a
porch halfway down the block.
Quietly, I asked, “Now what should we do Our ball is inside the school.”
“Well,” my brother responded, “no one will know whose ball it is. And no one saw us,
except that old man down there. And he probably can’t see this far.”
“He probably doesn’t know who we are anyway,” I added.
“Let’s go home,” my brother suggested.
“Okay,” I agreed. “Should we tell Mom and Dad ”
“I don’t know,” my brother answered.
Then we picked up the rest of our balls and headed for home, keeping silent all the way
with our heads drooping.
