Wanda Smith always wanted to be a school teacher but sometimes meeting life’s demanding realities could mean a dream delayed. A mother of three, Smith also cared for her mom. While squarely shouldering her family responsibilities, she took jobs as a bus monitor and custodian at the Brenham Independent School District in Texas. The hours were tiring, but rather than let her dream die, at age 37, with the support and encouragement of her husband, she added night classes to her schedule. Nine years on, she finally graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Sam Houston State university. She was a certified teacher at last.
Smith’s story came full circle when she was hired as a first-grade teacher back at Brenham Elementary School. “When I stand in front of my classroom, I am living my dream,” Smith said during a Today show. During the pandemic, as some of her students struggled to meet the demands of distance learning, Smith stepped up to the challenge. Noting that many of the kids she taught came from single-parent families, she began delivering packets of schoolwork to them at home. It’s no wonder Smith’s kids adored her. In a special surprise ceremony, they shouted their praise and held up big colorful signs declaring their devotion.
The sentiment was echoed by Brenham’s mayor, Milton Tate Jr., who officially declared May 18 as “Be the Best You Can Be” Wanda Smith Day. The phrase was also carved on a commemorative schoolyard bench, and in addition, a scholarship for up-and-coming teachers at Sam Houston State has been established in her name.
Smith’s life is an example as well as an inspiration. By always striving to be the best she could be, with hard work and perseverance, she graduated from cleaning classrooms to leading classrooms.
24. What prevented Smith from achieving her dream at a younger age
A. Her heavy family burden. B. Her strong love for her mother.
C. The lack of family support. D. The demanding academic requirements.
25. What’s the students’ attitude towards Smith
A. Concerned. B. Respectful. C. Critical. D. Sympathetic.
26. Which of the following facts shows Smith’s influence beyond her school
A. A day was celebrated nationwide in her name.
B. Her name was carved on a schoolyard bench.
C. Colorful signs were held by her students.
D. A scholarship was created in her honor.
27. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To stress the importance of setting up a dream.
B. To advocate lifelong learning by introducing Smith’s story.
C. To show how Smith did her best with her whole heart and devotion.
D. To illustrate how Smith’s experience inspired the people around.

Humans are not the animal kingdom’s only super fans of fashion. Tits (山雀) can be fashion-victims, too, apparently. A study, published in Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology by Sonja Wild and Lucy Aplin, shows that, given the chance, they decorate their nests with this season’s must-have color.
Dr Wild and Dr Aplin were following up work published in 1934 by Henry Smith Williams, an American naturalist. He noticed that when he put various colored balls of wool out in his garden, almost always one and only one became popular that season, integrated into local birds’ nests. But which particular color was favored varied from season to season. This suggested that the color chosen by one of the early birds was spotted and copied by others.
Williams’s work was, however, forgotten until Dr Wild and Dr Aplin came across it while following up on a different study. The study noted that, during any given breeding (繁殖) season, the blue tits they were investigating tended to integrate the same herbal plants into their nests regardless of how abundant those herbs actually were. This, too, suggested fashion-following —and it likewise led Dr Wild and Dr Aplin to infer that birds were studying the nests of others and copying them. They therefore set out to rerun Williams’s experiment, but this time to collect some actual numbers.
The birds they followed were part of a well-monitored population of blue, great and marsh tits in a wood near the institute. Of the 68 tits’ nests built that season in the experimental areas, 26 contained wool, including 18 of the color of wool chosen by the first nest builder.
Tits, then, do seem to be “on trend” when it comes to nest-building materials. Why that should happen remains unclear. Dr Wild and Dr Aplin suspect the trendsetters are older birds, and younger ones simply follow. Williams’s original work, though, suggests such initial choices are random. A bit like those of the leaders of human fashions.
32. What do we know about tits from the first two paragraphs
A. Tits choose the same color all the time.
B. Tits tend to copy others in building their nests.
C. Tits suffer a lot from following fashion.
D. Tits like to follow fellow birds’ behavior in most cases.
33. Why did Dr Wild and Dr Aplin rerun William’s experiment
A. To offer guidance for William.
B. To study birds’ nests.
C. To prove birds’ modelling behavior.
D. To investigate bird breeding.
34. What can we learn about Dr Wild and Dr Aplin’s experiment
A. They believed older tits chose colors at random.
B. They knew exactly why tits followed the first nest builder.
C. They discovered most tits used wool in building their nests.
D. They assumed older tits were the ones to lead the trend.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Tits: Fashion Followers B. Nest Building: Colors First
C. Birds: Human Followers D. Scientific Research: Numbers First

Ahmad sat at a table in the school cafeteria. The election for fifth-grade class president was only about two weeks away, and Ahmad knew it was time to begin seriously campaigning.
“I think you need a catchy slogan,” said his friend, twirling a pencil as he thought. “How about Authentic and Approachable: Always Ahmad ” Ahmad beamed. “It’s got a nice ring to it.”
“You need something that people will remember. They won’ t forget that Olivia was the fourth-grade president last year and they’ll like the fact that she has experience,” his friend added. Ahmad nodded, grinning. “I know, but I think I can bring some fresh ideas. Do you know Olivia’s plans for the campaign ”
Olivia, meanwhile, sat at her kitchen table with her twin sister. They were eating cupcakes while discussing what to put on the signs they planned to make. At the center of the table were posterboard in bright colors, markers, pens, colored pencils, and crayons.
“Where should we start ” asked her sister, brushing the cream from her hands. “What do you want people to know about you ” Olivia raised her head and thought for a moment. “I want them to know I’ m a hard worker,” she said, eyes bright and alert. “I have experience as class president. I also have a lot of ideas of making this a great school year. ” “ Experience is truly important,” commented her sister. “ Dad once told me he would vote for someone who had proven to be the kind of leader he was looking for in his company.”
An enormous grin spread across Olivia’s face. “What about Olivia for President — All Original, All Experience,” suggested her sister. “Oh, or Olivia for President, Opportunity for All ” “ I like both of those,” exclaimed Olivia. “The first one reminds the voters of my experience. The second one lets them know I will listen to their ideas and work for and with them.” Her words fell as she took out a fat red marker and began the first poster.

Two weeks later on the election, Ms. Pond announced, “Now, we have two candidates with same votes.” Hearing this, students immediately got noisy. It was not until the class quieted down that Ms. Pond announced, “They are, Ahmad, and Olivia!” To pick the winner, a speech was arranged and Olivia, the always shining girl, offered to be first. “Dear Ms. Pond and classmates, my slogan is ALL ORIGINAL, ALL EXPERIENCE,” came Olivia’s voice, as cool and confident as ever. She enthusiastically shared her creative ideas, from holding informative class meetings to organizing spring and autumn outings. Every single word shows that she was totally a hard worker! As the last word of her speech fell, waves of whoops erupted among the class.
Ahmad went to the front of the room to begin his speech after Olivia. Though he felt nervous at first, the moment he set his feet in front of his peers, his passion and confidence completely took over. “To be honest, I may not be as experienced as Olivia, but my fresh ideas will definitely transport you to a whole new dimension this year,” came Ahmad’s powerful voice, who also promised that there would be study trips to the key universities and team building activities all year round. Everyone’s eyes were glued to this boy, even Olivia was stricken by his catching speech! It came as no surprise that Ahmad won this year’s election. He made it! All his classmates were clapping. At this time, Ahmad’s and Olivia’s eyes met, and both of them beamed with the brightest smiles.

W: That’s $110 if you’re over 19, and $95 if you’re under.
M: I’m 25.
W: And once you’re a member, you’re also permitted to wear our kit when you’re out cycling.
M: Yes, I’ve seen cyclists wearing it. So, can I buy that at the club or at a shopping mall
W: No, it’s made to order by a company in Brisbane. You can find them online. They’re called Jerriz. You can use your membership number to put in an order on their website.

W: Good evening, everyone! Our guest is Kevin Olsen. Kevin works on a coast. His job is to rescue whales, fish and sea birds when they get into trouble with pollution. Welcome to the program, Kevin.
M: Glad to be here, thank you.
W: What do you do in your job
M: I spend a lot of time with sea animals, trying to learn what things they need in the environment. If we know that, we can help them survive in the future.
W: Can you tell us something about the disaster a short time ago
M: OK. What happened recently is the oil disaster, the birds had oil on their wings, so they couldn’t fly. And they couldn’t eat the fish because the fish were covered with oil.
W: Why did you choose this job It’s tough since you have to work outdoors.
M: Well, I was always interested in the world of the ocean and how the plants and animals fit together in their system.
W: Thank you for coming and sharing your story with our audience, Kevin.
M: My pleasure.

W: White T-shirts are very common in our daily life. But do you know the history of the white T-shirts Well, white cotton T-shirts were first worn by the US Navy and by 1948, every American soldier was wearing one too. But it was Hollywood films that made the T-shirt really popular: actors Marlon Brando and James Dean wore classic white T-shirts in On the Waterfront and Rebel Without a Cause. After these films, every young man wanted to wear one. Women didn’t begin to wear T-shirts until the end of the 1950s. In the 1959 French film Breathless, American actress Jean Seberg wore a T-shirt advertising an English language newspaper. This started a new fashion for T-shirts for women. Later, the T-shirt became a way of saying something important. For example, soon after the black American leader Angela Devis went to prison in 1970, people all around the world were wearing T-shirts with the message “Free Angela”. In the 1970s, French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent designed a famous blue T-shirt with his name in white letters.
