Pre-reading
Step 1 Lead-in
1. Show students a video about people and animals accompanying each other.
2. Ask students some questions:
Do you like animals
Do you have a pet or do you want a pet Talk about your stories.
Step 2 Reading (2a)
1. Let students work in pairs and discuss the question: How do you usually thank someone who helps you
2. Ask some students to talk about it.

Step 3 Reading (2b)
Fast reading
1. Ask students to look through the letter and find the answer to the question:
What kind of letter is it
Answers It’s a thank-you letter.
2. Ask students to read Para. 1 and answer the questions.
(1) Who wrote the letter to Miss Li Why (2) What did Miss Li do
Answers (1) Ben Smith wrote the letter to Miss Li. Because he wanted to thank her for sending money to Animal Helpers and to tell her how Animal Helpers helped him.
(2) She sent money to Animal Helpers, a group that was set up to help disabled people.
3. Ask students to read Para. 2 and answer the question “What are Ben’s difficulties ”
Answers He can’t use his arms or legs well, so normal things like answering the telephone, opening and closing doors, or carrying things are difficult for him.
4. Ask students to read Para. 3 and fill in the chart below.

Step 4 Reading (2c)
1. Ask students to read the passage again. Look at the list of words in 2c and circle the part of speech of each word and make sentences with these words.
