Paul O’Sullivan lounged around his Baltimore apartment one evening in 2014,feeling bored. So, like many others, he logged on to Facebook to find out just how many others on the social network shared his name. Moments later, dozens of name twins from around the world filled his screen. On a whim, he decided to send friend requests to them all.
Many of his fellow Paul O’Sullivans ignored him, but a few felt too curious to pass up his invitation. As Baltimore Paul scrolled through the other Paul O’Sullivans’ profiles, he noticed something four of them had in common: They were all musicians. Like Baltimore Paul, Rotterdam Paul sang and played guitar. Another Paul in Manchester, England, played bass. And Paul from Pennsylvania was a drummer. Baltimore Paul had an idea. Wouldn’t it be funny, he asked the other musical Pauls, if they formed a band called The Paul O’Sullivans Yes, they all agreed,
Starting a band across multiple time zones proved to be tricky. Shaky Wi-Fi and other technical difficulties meant they were often out of sync. And being even half a second off from one another wrecked their sound. To fix this, they created a sort of musical assembly line. Baltimore Paul and Rotterdam Paul wrote and recorded a basic track, then e-mailed it to Manchester Paul.
“I listen to the song over a few days,” says Manchester Paul, to get a feel for what bass arrangement seems most appropriate.“ Once he recorded a bass track, he e-mailed it back to Baltimore Paul, who then built it into the main song. Later, Pennsylvania Paul added the drumbeat. Round and round the track went, with each member adding on his own layer until they achieved the sound they want.
The Paul O’Sullivan Band released its first original song, “Namesake”, in March2016, which was about long-distance relationships. And when COVID-19 slowly shutdown the world, the Pauls didn’t miss a beat. After all, the band had already got the hang of remote work. They used their time during the pandemic to record their first EP.
Titled Internet Famous: A Retrospective, it was released last April.
“What are the odds,” says Baltimore Paul, “that a random Facebook request would lead not only to new music but to lasting friendships as well ” “Some things are just meant to be.”

Have you ever spent half an hour searching the Internet which, as you find out afterwards, lasted three hours, or opened a book shortly after breakfast and a little while later noticed that the room was getting darker
Most people can remember experiencing such a state. Your mind wasn't wandering; you were totally focused and concentrated on that activity, to such an extent that you were not even aware of yourself. Psychologists call these fully absorbing experiences flow states, which were discovered and named by a world-famous psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. His celebrated book Flow: The Psychology of Happiness became an instant best-seller, making its way to the top self-help classics.
The state of flow happens under very specific conditions-when we encounter a challenge that is testing for our skills, and yet our skills and capacities are such that it is just about possible to meet this challenge. So both the challenge and the skills are at high levels, stretching us almost to the limit. If challenges exceed skills, one can become anxious. If skills exceed challenges, we usually become bored. Neither of these two cases result in flow.
What is also interesting in flow is the almost total absence of emotions during the actual process. One seems to be almost beyond experiencing emotions, most likely because the awareness of self is not present. Mihaly himself is also very much aware of the potential negative impact of the flow. One philosopher once describes his own experience of flow: “When I get totally involved in the conversation, I am not aware of myself, the world around or the passage of time. Sometimes, I may become addictive to that existence, unwilling to cope with other daily routines of life, like forgetting dinner, and saying goodbye to my children.”
8. What is the purpose of Paragraph 1
A. To offer a general background of the topic. B. To make an overall outline for the passage.
C. To introduce the topic of the passage. D. To clarify the definition of the topic.
9 In which of the following experience can we enter "flow state"
A. Adopting a dog. B. Watching TV.
C. Playing the chess. D. Arguing with others.
10. What can we infer from the third paragraph
A. The state of flow is little conditional. B. Genius at normal schools often gets bored.
C. Challenges at high levels push us to the limit. D. Skills play the most important part in flow.
11. Why does the writer quote the philosopher's words
A. To show the drawbacks of the flow. B. To stress the value of self-awareness.
C. To underline the absence of emotions. D. To indicate the difficulty of enjoying the flow.
D
From airplanes to apartments, most spaces are now designed with sound-absorbing materials that help decrease various sounds of everyday life. But most of the sound-absorbing materials that can cancel out human voices, traffic noise and music are made from plastic foams (泡沫) that aren’t easily recycled or degraded. Now, researchers reporting in ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering have created a biodegradable film (薄膜) obtained from seaweed, which effectively absorbs sounds in this range.
Controlling and optimizing the way sound moves throughout a room is key to creating functional spaces. Foam sound-absorbing panels are a common solution, and they come in a variety of materials and thicknesses tailored to specific sound requirements. Most of these foams, however, are made from a type of plastic material and other chemical substances that are obtained from natural-oil or petrol. To avoid petrochemicals, researchers have explored more renewable sources and biodegradable sound-absorbing alternatives. But many current options are made from plant fibers that don’t effectively decrease noises in the most useful range of sound frequencies, or they are too thick or difficult to produce. So, Chindam’s team wanted to develop a biodegradable material from a plant, which would be simple to produce and could absorb a range of sounds.
The team created films of agar (琼脂), a material that comes from seaweed, along with other additives developed from plants and varied the thickness of the films. After running the materials through a battery of tests, the researchers measured how well the films reduced sound across a range of frequencies. To do this, the team created a sound tube in which a speaker is placed at one end, and the test film is fitted over the other end. Microphones in the middle of the tube measured the amount of sound sent by the speaker and the amount of sound reflected off the film. These experiments showed that the films with many small holes made with the highest concentrations of agar had the greatest sound-absorbing qualities and per-formed similarly to traditional sound-absorbing foams. The researchers plan to explore ways to change the agar films to give them other desirable properties, such as flame resistance, and will explore other biologically obtained film materials.
12. What is the disadvantage of plastic foams
A. They take up too much space.
B. They cannot absorb sounds effectively.
C. They have difficulty achieving sustainable use.
D. They cannot meet specific sound requirements.
13. Which kind of sound-absorbing material would Chindam’s team develop
A. One made from plant fibers.
B. One produced toughly and tiredly.
C. One developed from petrochemicals.
D. One obtained easily and effectively.
14. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. The purpose of film research.
B. A series of tests on the new material.
C. A tool of measuring the film thickness.
D. The difficulty of searching the new material.
15. What can be the best title for the text
A. A Tube for Measuring the Amount of Underwater Sounds
B. Plastic Foams: the Worst Choice of Absorbing Sounds
C. Seaweed: a Better Sound-absorbing Underwater Plant
D. An Eco-friendly Sound-absorbing Material from Seaweed

When my daughters reached the third and fourth grades, I occasionally allowed them to walk to and from school alone, if the weather permitted. One warm spring day, a small friend followed them home after school. This friend was different from any other friends they had brought home. With a yellowish coat and tiny brown spots dropped across her nose, she was the cutest puppy I had ever seen.
When my husband got home that evening, he recognized the breed——a beagle puppy (猎兔犬), not more than twelve weeks old, he guessed. She ran to him right away and after dinner climbed into his lap to watch TV. By now the girls were both begging me to keep her.
She had no collar or identifying marks of any sort. I didn’t know what to do. I thought about running an ad in the lost-and-found but I really didn’t want to. It would break the kids’ hearts if someone should show up. Besides, her owners should have watched her more closely. I tried to find seemingly logical reasons to explain my behavior.
By the end of the week, she was part of our family. We had named the puppy Molly. She was very intelligent and good with the girls. This was a good idea, I thought. It was time for the girls to take responsibility for another life, so they would learn the nurturing skills they’d need if they decided to become mommies when they grew up.
The following week, something told me to check the lost-and-found section in the local paper. One particular ad jumped out at me and my heart pounded with fear at what I read. Someone was asking for the return of a lost beagle puppy near our grade school. They sounded desperate. My hand shook.

根据第二段“They were all musicians. Like Baltimore Paul, Rotterdam Paul sang and played guitar. Another Paul in Manchester, England, played bass. And Paul from Pennsylvania was a drummer.”(他们都是音乐家。
根据第三段“Shaky Wi-Fi and other technical difficulties meant they were often out of sync. And being even half a second off from one another wrecked their sound. ”(不稳定的 Wi-Fi 和其他技术问题意味着它们经常不同步。即使只有半秒钟的距离也会破坏他们的声音。)可知这个跨时区的乐队面临着网络延迟和卡顿的难题,因而“this”此处指代技术问题的障碍,选项B. “The existence of technical barriers.”(技术问题限制),符合题意,故选B。
根据第五段“After all, the band had already got the hang of remote work. They used their time during the pandemic to record their first EP.”(毕竟,乐队已经掌握了远程工作的窍门。

C 9. C 10. B 11. A
根据第一段“Have you ever spent half an hour searching the Internet which, as you find out afterwards, lasted three hours, or opened a book shortly after breakfast and a little while later noticed that the room was getting darker (你是否曾经花了半个小时在网上搜索,结果发现持续了三个小时;或者你是否曾在早餐后不久打开一本书,不一会儿就发现房间变暗了?)”以及第二段中“Most people can remember experiencing such a state. Your mind wasn't wandering; you were totally focused and concentrated on that activity, to such an extent that you were not even aware of yourself. Psychologists call these fully absorbing experiences flow states, which were discovered and named by a world-famous psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. (大多数人都记得经历过这种状态。你没有走神;你完全专注于这个活动,以至于你甚至没有意识到你自己。心理学家称这些完全吸收的体验为心流状态,这是由世界著名心理学家米哈里·契克森米哈里发现并命名的)”可推知,第一段的目的是为了第二段关于“心流状态”的文章主题。故选C。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“The state of flow happens under very specific conditions-when we encounter a challenge that is testing for our skills, and yet our skills and capacities are such that it is just about possible to meet this challenge. So both the challenge and the skills are at high levels, stretching us almost to the limit.(心流的状态发生在非常特定的条件下——当我们遇到一个考验我们技能的挑战时,而我们的技能和能力刚好可以应对这个挑战。 所以挑战和技能都是高水平的,几乎把我们拉伸到极限)”可推知,四个选项中只有“下棋”可以考验我们的技能,而我们的能力也可以应对这个挑战,能让我们可以进入“心流状态”。故选C。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“If challenges exceed skills, one can become anxious. If skills exceed challenges, we usually become bored.(如果挑战超过了技能,人就会变得焦虑。如果技能超过了挑战,我们通常会感到无聊)”可推知,天才属于技能超过了挑战,所以在普通学校经常感到无聊。故选B。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Mihaly himself is also very much aware of the potential negative impact of the flow. One philosopher once describes his own experience of flow: “When I get totally involved in the conversation, I am not aware of myself, the world around or the passage of time. Sometimes, I may become addictive to that existence, unwilling to cope with other daily routines of life, like forgetting dinner, and saying goodbye to my children.”(米哈里本人也非常清楚流的潜在负面影响。一位哲学家曾描述过他自己的心流体验:“当我完全投入到对话中,我不会意识到自己、周围的世界或时间的流逝。有时候,我可能会对这种存在上瘾,不愿意处理其他日常生活的常规,比如忘记吃饭,和孩子们说再见。”)”可推知,作者引用哲学家的话是为了展示“心流状态”的缺点。故选A。
C 13. D 14. B 15. D

CHALLENGING STUDENT MYTHS
Everybody wants to be happy, lives in harmony with their parents and makes them proud, but in reality you may find yourself worried or even upset. ___16___. However, it may surprise you to know that research can help you become a more efficient and well-balanced student. Let’s examine some student myths that may be interfering(干涉) with your progress.
“The most successful students have no worries in exams. ”
___17___. In fact, these students do suffer stress-just like those with average or below average scores. In the UK, a database in 2021 showed that doctors provided more calming drugs for students aged between sixteen and eighteen than they had ever done before. Many of these drugs were for very able students to help them cope with stress and exam pressure. So remember, be realistic about your abilities.
“___18___”
It is just this kind of remark that produces pressure in anybody who is already anxious. Research shows that the most effective learning takes place if you use a quite different approach. So, adjust your study plan and take time to relax. In fact, an efficient learner knows how to strike a balance between work and rest. ___19___.
“I won’t be successful in the future if I don’t go to a key university. ”
This worry does affect many Chinese students and their parents. But how true is this point of view ___20___. First, clearly not everyone can go to a key university. Second, even if you don’t go to a key university, there is still the opportunity of going to one for post-graduate study. Third, if you take a course you like and do quite well in it, your motivation, training and hard work will impress your future employer. Remember, it is never too late to learn more!
A. Let’s look at the evidence
B. The most efficient students have more flexible approaches to learning
C. Some of these students are suffering harmful consequences
D. Only students who work day and night will succeed
E. This is a common assessment made of students with high scores in school
F. Above all, don’t become rigid in your approachwork hard but also work smart
G. Following a trend without thinking carefully can make you stressed and depressed
G 17. E 18. D 19. F 20. A

So, adjust your study plan and take time to relax.(正是这种话给任何已经焦虑的人带来了压力。
分析语篇可知,此空位于段末,属于总结句,根据空前的“So, adjust your study plan and take time to relax. In fact, an efficient learner knows how to strike a balance between work and rest. (所以,调整你的学习计划,花点时间放松一下。事实上,一个高效的学习者知道如何在工作和休息之间取得平衡。)”可知,学习要适当的休息,要达到一种工作与休息的平衡状态,F选项“Above all, don’t become rigid in your approach; work hard but also work smart(最重要的是,不要过于死板;努力工作,但也要聪明工作)”讲述的是既要工作又要休息,其中的work hard but also work smart与本段的小标题相对应,且与本段的内容一致。故选F项。
根据空前的“But how true is this point of view (但这种观点有多正确呢?)”可知,用提问的方式引出下文,结合空后的“First, clearly not everyone can go to a key university…(首先,显然不是每个人都能上重点大学。……)” 故选A项。

Aimed at helping the students from poverty-stricken areas, the Student Union launched a grand Charity Sale last Friday at our school’s stadium, which witnessed the kindness and generosity of all the students and teachers present.
As scheduled, the activity began at 3:00 p.m., lasting three hours. What came first was a moving speech delivered by a volunteer, mirroring the authentic life of the needy students and kindling the kindness. What subsequently followed was the exciting sales section where many second-hand items, ranging from electronic devices to old fancy clothes, were sold at a pretty low price. So enthusiastic were our schoolmates and teachers that all goods were snapped up within hours. All the money raised would be sent to the Red Cross and distributed to those needy students.
This Charity Sale proved successful and meaningful. Not only did we students promote our social responsibilities, but we also understood every bit of our kindness could pile up enormous strength.

When my daughters reached the third and fourth grades I occasionally allowed them to walk to and from school alone, if the weather permitted.

Instead, I pretended I hadn’t seen the ad. I folded the newspaper, put it away in the drawer and tried to ignore what I saw. However, trapped in the dilemma of choice, I hesitated whether I should hide the truth. It was not long before my husband and daughters came home and started to have fun with Molly. At the sight of the scene that they were playing happily, I couldn’t help thinking about the owner’s sincere lost-dog ad. Though it would be pretty hard to part with Molly, my moral code told me to make the right choice.
I knew in my heart I had to call that number and see if our Molly was the puppy they were desperately seeking. I quickly dialed the number and then came a woman’s voice. After explaining the situation of Molly, I could feel the embarrassing silence in the phone. Suddenly, she broke the embarrassing air and suggested that our families should raise Molly together. My parting pain gave way to excitement on the spot. I couldn’t say a word to describe my gratitude. In the following days, my daughters accepted to give Molly back and kept playing with Molly. We all knew that we did the right thing.
