On most Sundays, the sound of hammers(锤子)and other tools hitting stone can be heard in a village in the Chimalhuacan area, on Mexico City’s east side. The sounds come from stone carvers(石雕师)who still work on a skill that has been passed down for generations(世代)—even after the local stone was used up. The village is filled with meter-high religious(宗教的)figures and other beautiful stone objects.
Generations of stone carvers in Chimalhuacan also created much of the stonework found on buildings and in parks in the capital’s downtown.
While carvers in other areas long ago turned to machines, the workers here only use hammers and other special hand tools. Many are self-taught, but some, like Tomás Ugarte, aged 86, learned in the traditional way. This method of rock cutting has been passed down between family members, dating back about five generations.
The rock cutters are generally old. There were about 600 official stone carvers about 10 years ago. Now, there are probably only around 300. The carvers are dying and their children generally do not want to take up the trade.
Still, the stone carvers keep the old traditions alive. Many people in the area use stone tools made by the stone carvers.
Rev. Alberto Sandoval, who has known the stone workers since 1990, described them as “the backbone of the community.” Most of the carvers have work areas at home, which provides them with some money. They sell carvings for prices from $500 to $2,000. But they often do not sell much.
Unlike many craftspeople who want to see their works shown in museums, the carvers here also work for free at repairing the stonework at the 250-year-old local church, Santa Maria de Guadalupe.
Asked if the trade will continue, carver Mario Olivares read a poem written on the church wall: “Your art, your tradition, your culture and the nobility(高贵)of the people keep the spirit of this town alive.”
4. What is special about the stone carvers in Chimalhuacan
A. They have turned to machines. B. They only use hand tools.

6. What can we know about the carvers
A. They work for free most of the time. B. They like giving their works to museums.
C. They sell carvings at high prices. D. They often make a little money.
7. How did Mario Olivares feel about the future of the trade
A. Confident. B. Uncaring.

In a small village in northeastern Thailand, 23-year-old Siriporn Sapmak starts her day by live streaming (直播) her two Asian elephants on social media. She points her phone at the grey giants as she feeds them bananas. Siriporn, who has been caring for her elephants since she was in school, says she can raise about $27.46 worth of donations from several hours of live streaming. However, that is only enough to feed her two elephants for one day. Some days, she doesn’t receive any donations and her elephants are underfed.
Live streaming the two Asian elephants is a new source of income for the family that, before the pandemic(疫情), earned money by doing elephant shows in the Thai city of Pattaya. Like the Sapmak family, thousands of other elephant owners around the country had to go back to their home villages as the pandemic severely damaged elephant camps and foreign tourism came to a standstill. According to Edwin Wiek, founder of Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand, only 400,000 foreign tourists arrived in Thailand last year compared with nearly 40 million in 2019.
The government has sent 500,000 kilograms of grass across the country since 2020 to help feed the elephants. That would be enough to feed a dozen elephants for 4 months. But Thailand has nearly 4,000 elephants living in captivity. The Department of Livestock Development says that it plans to launch a program to help elephant owners plant seed to grow their own grasses.
While the government is expecting 10 million foreign tourists this year, some say this may not be enough to tempt Asian elephant owners back to top tourist destinations, given the relevant costs. “Who has the money right now to arrange a truck And who can guarantee they are really going to have business again when they go back ” said Wiek.
8. What does the author want to show by telling Siriporn’s story
A. She does well in taking care of elephants.
B. She pays her school fees by live streaming.
C. The Thai elephants are facing survival problems.
D. The Thai people like live streaming market.
9. What contributed most to elephant owners’ return to their home villages
A. High consumption in the city.
B. Their easy access to grass fields.
C. Their failure to afford elephant camps.
D. Inadequate income from foreign tourists.
10. What can be inferred about the measures taken by the government
A. They are far from satisfactory.
B. They have achieved the desired effects
C. They have created more new jobs.
D. They will relieve the stress of all caretakers.
11. What can be the best title for the text
A. Live Streaming Becomes Popular in Thailand
B. Pandemic Affects Thailand Elephant shows
C. Elephants Moved away from Pattaya
D. Grass is Greatly Needed in Developing Countries

Sea ice in the Antarctic (南极) area fell to a record low this year. The drop is a result of rising temperatures worldwide. And there is no quick method to make up for the ice drop, and the recovery (恢复) has a long way to go, scientists said recently in a new study.
Antarctica’s smallest summer ice cover fell further to a new low in February. This year’s sea ice minimum (最小值) is 20 percent lower than the average (平均值) over the last 40 years. The sea ice loss equals an area nearly 10 times that of New Zealand.
The warming of Earth’s surface driven by the burning of coal, gas and oil has made Antarctica more likely to suffer from extreme (极端的) events. And the result is almost “certain” to get worse, the study said. Climate change will “lead to increases in the size and rate”of heat waves, broken ice shelves and drops in sea ice, it said.
The effects of the Earth’s warming on Antarctica and the surrounding ocean have been uncertain. Scientists have had problems measuring how much the Earth’s warming is altering the thickness of Antarctic ice.
But from events such as the fast drop in sea ice, it is “scientifically reasonable” to suppose that extreme events are going to become worse as temperatures rise worldwide, said Martin Siegert of the University of Exeter, another study co-writer.
Siegert described the temperature increase as completely surprising. Siegert added that luckily the event had happened during the Antarctic winter, instead of summer, or it would have caused melting (融化) on the surface of the East Antarctic ice cover, which has so far been saved from melting.
Siegert used the term “fragile”, meaning easily broken or damaged, to describe Antarctica. “Antarctica is fragile as an environment, but extreme events test that fragility,” he said.
12 What do the scientists think of the recovery of Antarctic sea ice
A. It is hopeful. B. It is difficult.
C. It is on its way. D. It can’t be prevented.
13. Why does the author mention New Zealand
A. To explain the size of sea ice loss. B. To show the position of ice cover.
C. To describe how far Antarctica is. D. To state sea ice is connected to New Zealand.
14. What does the underlined word ”altering“ in paragraph 4 mean
A. Adding. B. Pressing.
C. Changing. D. Protecting.
15. What might have caused worse results according to Siegert
A. Antarctic sea ice is recovering too slowly.
B. The Antarctic ice cover is continuously moving.
C. The environment of Antarctica is easy to break.
D. Extreme events happen in Antarctic summer.

Undoubtedly, Mother Nature is always attractive to kids. In our childhood, how often did we turn a deaf ear to our parents’ advice Very often! Thus, we landed ourselves in a situation where we greatly regretted our act of not having listened to the advice of the wise.
Such an unforgettable experience I had at the age of 7 gave me an invaluable lesson, after which I deeply understood why my gentle mother was repeating the boring suggestions and I would try to take her suggestions seriously.
In my childhood, I was so crazy about nature that even playing among the colorful flowers in our garden could make my day. Our house was next to the woods which had always stirred up(激起) great curiosity in me in wanting to find out what was within. Every time I saw fascinating butterflies dancing from the woods, my curiosity grew.
But my mother didn’t like me wandering off on my own and always ensured that I was within her sight. Even if she allowed me to explore the surrounding area on my own, it was only to be somewhere near the house. Being as curious as the cat, I always desired to explore the woods. It seemed as if my mother had understood my desire, so she had warmed me on lots of occasions never to enter the woods alone.
“Mom, can I go out and play in the garden ” I asked.
“Sure,” she would reply each time. “Kate, you can play in the garden but you must promise me one thing—only when I’m with you can you go into the woods. There are no cases of animal attacks on humans, but it’s still dangerous for a little kid like you. It’s too easy to get lost in the woods.”
“Sure, you’ve said that many times!” I answered without patience at her repeated reminders.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

On most Sundays, the sound of hammers(锤子)and other tools hitting stone can be heard in a village in the Chimalhuacan area, on Mexico City’s east side. The sounds come from stone carvers(石雕师)who still work on a skill that has been passed down for generations(世代)—even after the local stone was used up. The village is filled with meter-high religious(宗教的)figures and other beautiful stone objects.
Generations of stone carvers in Chimalhuacan also created much of the stonework found on buildings and in parks in the capital’s downtown.
While carvers in other areas long ago turned to machines the workers here only use hammers and other special hand tools.

B She pays her school fees by live streaming.
C. The Thai elephants are facing survival problems.
D. The Thai people like live streaming market.
9. What contributed most to elephant owners’ return to their home villages
A. High consumption in the city.
B. Their easy access to grass fields.
C. Their failure to afford elephant camps.
D. Inadequate income from foreign tourists.
10. What can be inferred about the measures taken by the government
A. They are far from satisfactory.
B. They have achieved the desired effects
C. They have created more new jobs.
D. They will relieve the stress of all caretakers.
11. What can be the best title for the text
A. Live Streaming Becomes Popular in Thailand
B. Pandemic Affects Thailand Elephant shows
C. Elephants Moved away from Pattaya
D. Grass is Greatly Needed in Developing Countries
【答案】8. C 9. D 10. A 11. B

The warming of Earth’s surface driven by the burning of coal, gas and oil has made Antarctica more likely to suffer from extreme (极端) events.
12. What do the scientists think of the recovery of Antarctic sea ice
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. C 15. D

【答案】参考范文 1
However, curiosity got the better of me one morning. Ignoring my mother’s reminder, I slid into the forbidden world. How fascinating! Among various colorful flowers danced butterflies. With excitement, I chased after the graceful creatures, running deeper into the woods. Suddenly they flew over trees and disappeared. What’s worse, I got lost! I rushed around, crying for help, frightened and helpless, but in vain. I repeated the useless efforts until sunset. “If only I followed Mom’s reminder!” I curled up under a tree, in bitter regret and cried again.
“Kate ” Behind the trees covered by the rays of the setting sun came my mother’s voice. “Mom! I’m here!” Wild with joy, I rushed towards where the voice came from. Behind a tree appeared my mother. She dashed up, hugged me tight and checked whether I got hurt. “I’m so sorry! I should have appreciated your suggestion!” I burst into tears. Wiping tears from my muddy face, she repeated the reminders, which weren’t boring any more, but wise and affectionate, and were implanted in my life forever.
参考范文 2
However, curiosity got the better of me one morning. I summoned up my courage and decided to take a chance. Hardly had I entered the woods when I was totally attracted by the sight. The wandering clouds, the blooming flowers and the vigorous trees all kept me spellbound. At the sight of a beautiful butterfly, I tiptoed along the path, bent over, cupped my hands gently and danced with it down the track. Time flew and before I knew it, I was deep in the woods, unable to find the way out. With a feeling of horror totally holding me in its power, I squatted down under a tree, tears rolling down my cheeks.
“Kate ” Behind the trees covered by the rays of the setting sun came my mother’s voice. Hearing my mom’s voice, I yelled in a quivering tone, rushed towards her direction and threw my arms around her. Noticing my misty eyes, she patted me on the shoulders and checked whether I got hurt. Choked with emotion, I whispered, “I am OK, Mom. I will never go into the woods without your company and permission.” Shooting me an approving look, she added, “Next time you want to come, keep me informed!” In the setting sun, we headed back and this time, I held my mom’s hand tightly.
