The best places to visit in New Zealand
While there are a few cities in the country, what makes New Zealand special is its natural beauty. To find the best places to visit in New Zealand, try exploring a little further a field to truly experience what this beautiful country has to offer.
Coromandel: Best for beautiful beaches
Situated on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island, the Coromandel region is renowned for its beautiful beaches and native bush. In here you’ll find the iconic Cathedral Cove, with a natural rock archway and sandy beaches, and Hot Water Beach, where visitors can dig a natural hot pool in the sand. Other notable activities include visiting Karangahake Gorge, the Pinnacles overnight long-distance walk and Whenuakura Wildlife Sanctuary.
Planning tip: The region is compact, and it’s easy to explore from one of the charming towns like Hahei, Pauanui or Whangamata.
Abel Tasman National Park: Best for hiking
The undeveloped natural environment with native bush, small, clear bays and white, sandy beaches at Abel Tasman National Park is a great option as a day trip from Nelson, but even better if you can stay longer. The Abel Tasman Coast Track, one of New Zealand’s Great Walks, is a 37-mile walk through the bush with lovely views of the beach. It usually takes 3-5 days to complete the full walk; otherwise, take on just a section as a day hike. Shorter bush walk trails are available too if you’re not keen on a long-distance route.
Planning tip: No cars are allowed in the national park, so visitors need to either walk to their preferred destination or take a water taxi.
Fiordland National Park: Best for impressive landscapes
On the edge of the South Island, Fiordland National Park is home to one of New Zealand’s most famous attractions, the majestic Milford Sound, where visitors can see waterfalls, magnificent views along the fiord and some marine wildlife.
Planning tip: The nearby Doubtful Sound is also spectacular but less accessible—this place is more difficult to approach and travelers need to visit with a guide and by boat.

A. Coromandel. B. Abel Tasman National Park.
C. Doubtful Sound. D. Fiordland National Park.
22. What is special about Abel Tasman National Park

One day in Bronx, a first-grade teacher sat down in a barbershop for a trim (修剪) and one of his students walked in, sat down and started looking antsy. He thought to himself that it was a perfect opportunity to practice reading, a thought that changed Alvin Irby’s life, and he’s filling many barbershops around the US with free books to decrease childhood illiteracy (文盲). His non-profit, Barbershop Books, has delivered 50,000 free books to more than 200 barbershops in major black neighborhoods in 24 states, revealing the fact that in Black American communities, barbershops are like community centers where people get together naturally.
Irby’s program may seem straightforward, but there’s a lot of thought behind it. He puts a colorful, kid-sized bookshelf in each shop, making it inviting to children. The books displayed are all carefully chosen based on recommendations from his target audience. The bookshelves display the covers of the books, helping kids who may be interested in reading seize the opportunity for themselves, whether they’re in the barber’s chair or they’re waiting on their dad or friend. And, Irby involves the barbers in his mission—training them to engage kids about reading. “We want them to encourage kids to use the reading spaces,” he said. “Then they can talk to them about how they like reading, how funny a book was, or tell them about another book another kid was reading.”
Denny Moe was the first barber to work with Irby. Moe had previously offered video games at his Harlem shop, to bring in extra income, but he was willing to abandon that to help the community. “I decided to pay it forward by getting rid of the video games, putting books in here, just to get the kids’ minds going” he said. “I want to make an impact.”
“These books, I would say, have power,” 8-year-old boy Chance said. That’s what keeps Irby motivated. “I’m just excited that we get to create a safe space for boys to do something that’s really life changing, “he said. “That’s what I really believe reading is. It unlocks potential.”
24. Why is Irby’s program appealing to children
A. It stimulates children’s efforts. B. It guarantees children’s security.
C. It responds to children’s requests. D. It caters to children’s preferences.
25. What made Denny Moe the first barber to cooperate with Irby
A. His desire to make a big fortune.
B. His ambition to make a difference.
C. His hope of meeting business demands.
D. His motive for attracting more customers.
26. Why does the author mention Chance in the last paragraph
A. To prove Irby’s efforts successful.
B. To stress great importance of books.
C. To show human unlimited potential.
D. To urge children to read more books.
27. What is the real meaning of Irby’s act of kindness
A. Reading can change children’s life.
B. Hairdressers can earn more money.
C. Children are completely independent.
D. Barbershops are good gathering places.

Dolphins and fishermen in Laguna, Brazil, like the same food: Mullets (鲻鱼). But rather than compete, the two have formed an mon bottlenose dolphins will chase schools of mullets toward shore, where a row of fishermen stand waist-deep in the water, nets in hand. The fishermen can’t see the fish through the murky water, so instead, they watch the dolphins. When the marine mammals slap their heads or tails against the water, they cue (提示) the fishermen to cast their nets, which in turn breaks up the schools and makes individual fish easier for the dolphins to catch.
Now, a new study suggests the dolphins are willing partners in this cooperation. They pay close attention to the humans, timing their actions to maximize their catch. The animals may even be guiding the people, says Simon Ingram, a marine biologist. He says, “It’s almost as if the dolphins are training the humans.” Fishers must understand the dolphins’ cues, learning them over time, Cantor, a behavioral ecologist at the University of Cambridge, says. “The dolphins are almost like teachers.”
This fishing partnership has passed down through the generations, lasting for more than a century. According to a study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers suggest dolphins that hunt with humans have increased survival rates over those that don’t. These cooperative dolphins are more likely to stay near the shore, reducing their chance of entanglement (缠住) in illegal fishing gear. Fishers were also more successful when they worked with the dolphins. When dolphins were present, the fishers were 17 times more likely to catch fish and netted nearly 4 times more mullets when they timed their casting with the dolphins’ signals. This is really incredible cooperative behavior.
Other populations of dolphins have also been known to cooperate with human fishers, herding fish toward shore or into nets off eastern Australia, Mauritania, and Southeast Asia. But these practices have either disappeared or are in decline.
28. How can dolphins catch mullets more easily according to paragraph 1
A. By competing against humans.
B. By using unique hunting skills.
C. By forming a team with other fishes.
D. By cooperating with local fishermen.
29. Why does the ecologist say that the dolphins are almost like teachers
A. The dolphins always imitate human behavior.
B. The dolphins try to communicate with fishers.
C. The dolphins are willing to adjust their actions.
D. The dolphins often signaled fishers to catch fish.
30. What’s the benefit of dolphins working with fishermen
A. They avoid potential risks or dangers.
B. They are often rescued by fishermen.
C. They have better living environment.
D. They are getting increasingly smarter.
31. What does the author intend to convey in the text
A. Dolphins are cooperative creatures.
B. Dolphins are dependent on fishermen.
C. Humans are struggling for their survival.
D. Humans are learning skills from animals

Amazon has recently revealed its new machines, including its first fully autonomous warehouse robot. It’s called Proteus, and it was designed to be able to move around Amazon’s facilities on its own while carrying carts full of packages. The company said the robot uses advanced safety, perception and navigation (导航) technology, allowing it to do its work without delaying human employees.
In a video Amazon posted, Proteus was seen moving under the carts and transporting them to other locations. It sends out a green beam (光束) ahead of it while it moves, and it stops if a human worker steps in front of the beam.
Amazon’s aim is to automate (使自动化) the handling of its package carts so as to reduce the need for human workers to manually move them around its facilities. In fact, the e-commerce giant stressed that its robots were designed to create a safer workplace for people. “Our vision was never tied to a choice between people and technology. Instead, it was about people and technology working safely and harmoniously together to deliver for our customers,” it claimed.
Another new robot called Cardinal was also designed with the idea of reducing the risk of employee injuries in mind. Cardinal is a robotic arm that picks up packages, reads their labels and then places them in the appropriate cart for the next stage of the shipping process. Artificial intelligence and computer vision enable it to sort packages correctly.
Amazon has also revealed that it’s working on an AI technology that can automatically scan packages. With this scanning capability in place, human workers won’t have to pause while sorting packages: The system can quickly recognize a package that passes its camera. Amazon explained that its camera runs at 120 frames per second and is powered by computer vision and machine learning technology.
Having introduced several robots over the years, the e-commerce giant has always emphasized that their purpose is to improve safety at its warehouses. As an Amazon robotics lead put it, “Replacing people with machines is just a fallacy (谬见), and that could end with a company going out of business.”
32. What are Amazon’s warehouse robots used to do
A. Guarantee staff’s safety.
B. Transport loads of packages.
C. Navigate for human employees.
D. Monitor the situation of human work.
33. What’s Amazon’s vision for developing technology
A. To have robots work in harmony with humans.
B. To develop robots to replace workforce entirely.
C. To create robots that do extremely dangerous work.
D. To make a choice between people and technology.
34. What do paragraph 4 and 5 focus on
A. The ways of operating a robot. B. The theoretical risks of a robot.
C. The potential applications of AI. D. The work process of Al cameras.
35. What can we infer from the text
A. Amazon is still developing advanced robots.
B. Amazon’s first autonomous robots are on sale.
C. Robots are widely used in every aspect of life.
D. Delivery robots have prevented many injuries.

Most athletes and parents would agree that sportsmanship is an important aspect of athletics. Although it comes in many forms, everyone can list what sportsmanship looks like. We shake hands before and after games. 36 These examples are just displaying good sportsmanship.
It is easy for parents and kids to get caught up in a game and become too focused on winning. Although winning is important, it is not always the most important aspect of the game. 37 Good sportsmanship is one of those life lessons that should be intentionally learned, taught and practiced.
No matter how much we would like to, we cannot win at everything every time. 38 After a hard-fought game, the loser felt frustrated in a losing effort. It can be very difficult to look your opponents in the eye and tell them “good job”. But this is what is asked of athletes. How do we handle losing with dignity
39 Almost nobody is willing to come second in a game, but only one can be champion. There is no need to be overcome with defeat. Instead, accept failure and face up to it bravely, believing failure is the mother of success. Recognize the winners and congratulate them.
Winning is fun! It is the reward for your hard work. When we participate in a sport that keeps score, it is our responsibility to the team to do our best to win within the rules of the game and within the spirit of the game. 40
A. Keep losing in perspective.
B. So we need to learn to deal with defeat.
C. Besides, winning doesn’t mean you are perfect.
D. We clap for injured players once they are on their feet.
E. There is so much to be gained from an athletic experience.

I was looking forward to our morning trip with my son Scott to the Collingswood Flea Market (跳蚤市场). It was a typical November day, freezing in the shade and warm in the sun. A perfect day for outdoor shopping.
Scott and I walked up and down looking at the many tables covered with Christmas decorations along with the usual clothes and jewelry, but we simply bought a few small items. After an hour of walking with the cold wind blowing, we decided to go home for lunch. On our way, we made a quick stop at Wawa for those delicious soft, . salted pretzels (椒盐卷). Scott ran into the store while I waited in the car. Sitting alone, I was rubbing my cold hands together when I noticed that my engagement ring (订婚戒指) was missing. . I knew I’d been wearing it when we’d visited a jewelry stand earlier, and I hadn’t taken it off. My heart was racing now.
When I informed Scott of the missing ring he couldn’t believe it either. “Mom, if you had worn gloves, it wouldn’t have fallen off your finger. Look in your pockets and handbag!” We searched the car and searched my clothes, too. No ring! It must have fallen off my finger in the cold.
We headed back to the flea market and parked in the same spot as before. We checked that area, and then began walking up and down the maze (迷宫) of tables while looking at the ground. Leaves blew in the wind and people were everywhere. Hundreds of feet passed by and I began getting lightheaded as I attentively looked at the ground. It was an expensive engagement ring my husband had given me years earlier. I had never lost or misplaced it in all that time... until now.
I was annoyed with myself for having lost the ring. We drove home as I tried to hold back my tears.
