I'm Savannah and I remember beginning to grow up that winter night when my parents and I
were returning from my aunt's house, and my mother said that we might soon be leaving for
America. We were on the bus then.I was crying, and some people on the bus were turning around to
look at me.I remember that I could not bear the thought of never hearing again the radio program for
school children to which I listened every morning.
In fact,I think I cried very little when I was saying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When

we were leaving,I thought about all the places I was going to see — the strange and magical places I
had known only from books and pictures. The country I was leaving and never to come back to was
hardly in my head then.
The four years that followed taught me the importance of being positive but the idea did not
come to me at once. For the first two years in New York I was really lost — having to study in three
schools as a result of family moves.I did not quite know what I was or what I should be.Mother
remarried and things became even more complex for me.Some time passed before my stepfather and
I got used to each other.I was often sad,and saw no end to "the hard times."
My responsibilities in the family increased a lot since I knew English better than everyone else at
home.I wrote letters, filled out forms, translated at interviews with immigration (移民) officers,
took my grandparents to the doctor and translated there, and even discussed telephone bills with
company representatives.
From my experiences,I have learned one important rule:Almost all common troubles go
away at last!Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up,and just wait a
little!I believe that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that easy.

The term is "space archaeology(考古学)",but the field is much more down to Earth.Space
archaeologists use satellite imagery and other remote-sensing techniques to look for ancient sites on
our planet. As archaeologist Sarah Parcak explains in her new book,Archaeology from Space, these
tools have transformed studies of ancient times. "We've gone from mapping a few dozen ancient sites
in one summer-long archaeological season to mapping hundreds,if not thousands,of sites in
weeks," she writes.
With Parcak as a guide, the book offers a lively, inspiring trip around the world, back in time
and even into the future.Parcak begins with the basics of space archaeology, explaining how,for
example , satellite images can reveal the locations of walls or the foundation of a former
building.Even long-buried ruins can leave a mark on the surface, affecting the growth of vegetation
(植被)and so resulting in "crop marks".These outlines become apparent from high above and
with instruments attuned to certain wavelengths of light.
In example after example,Parcak demonstrates the capabilities of different technologies. Many of
the book's stories and tales of fieldwork focus on what Parcak have learned about ancient
Egypt. While studies of monuments and tombs have revealed aspects of everyday Egyptian life,
satellite data have filled in some bigger picture details. In the first survey of settlement patterns in the
ancient Nile Delta,Parcak's team discovered that people largely abandoned the region as a result of
environmental change and droughts near the end of Egypt's Old Kingdom some 4,000 years ago.It
feels remarkably timely in this era of climate change reading what contributed to the Old Kingdom's

Nowadays in a prosperous world,we don't only expect to obtain money through our labor.
36 To help us on the search for fulfilling work, here are some useful ideas.
Accept that being confused about careers is perfectly normal
Nowadays there are about half a million varieties of work. The result? We can become so anxious
about making the wrong choice that we end up making no choice at all.Psychologists call this "the
paradox of choice",a problem caused by too many options. So we should acknowledge that
confusion is natural. 37 .
Know yourself
Start by writing down everything you've ever enjoyed doing or making, which might include
building a tree house,or sorting out the winter clothes. Then there will, somewhere,be the shape
of an ideal future working self, but it'll be in need of being analyzed thoroughly. That's where
philosophy comes in.Philosophy is the art of clearing up,and demanding logic of our first thoughts.
Try something
38 But we need data, and we can only understand ourselves and others by colliding with the
real world,in the process getting to know both it and our own natures. We need to take small steps
to gather information, for example,by interning or volunteering.
39 .
So many bad self-help books are about confidence. But in a strange way,it truly does seem as if
the difference between success and failure is sometimes just the courage to give it a go. 40 It
makes people imagine only certain people, but not oneself, have the right to get certain things. But
it isn't true.As we know,a lot more is possible than we might think at our moments of self-doubt.
A.Be confident.

To feel shame, and to instinctually try to conceal it,requires a(n) 49 base on which we
can build.
50 there will always be among us miserably broken people who purposefully seek sunlight for
their evil deeds. The prospect of the whole world watching does not discourage, but in fact, 51

Fiona and I had been classmates since kindergarten. She was always wherever I was and she was
always ahead of me.Dance performance needed a big finish?Fiona was picked.Selling cookies for
charity? "Oh,I'm sorry," the lady living next door to me would say, "I just bought twenty
boxes from Fiona.Such a nice girl." And the school plays?Fiona would have the leads while I was
cast as her mother or neighbor.I even played her dog once.Yeah,whatever.
Then the day of the choir concert audition(面试) came.We waited while Ms.Jones called us one
at a time into the choir room. When Ms.Jones got to the C's,my heart sped up each time she came to
the door.By the time she actually called my name,my whole body was shaking. When I came back,
Fiona smiled at me.Ms.Jones called her name and Fiona followed her.She was still calm and smiling
when her audition was over.
When Ms.Jones made the announcement of who had made the special choir group,I wasn't
surprised when Fiona's name was on the list and mine wasn't. "So," I said under my breath, "what
else is new?"
Sudden clapping brought me out of my thought.Everyone was looking at me.I must have missed
something here.Ms.Jones walked towards me and said, "Celia, you will have to start practicing with
me.The lead singer takes extra preparation." Lead singer?I got the lead singer?I glanced over at
Fiona. She smiled and gave me the thumbs-up sign. She was always so nice.
Now the big day had come.We stepped onto the stage and took our places.I was front and
center.Ms.Jones raised her baton (指挥棒) and we began to sing. The spotlight flashed over me
and then circled me in its bright light.Ms.Jones nodded and pointed her baton at me.That baton must
