Even if you haven’t tried Pamela’s workouts, her name likely rings a bell -the German-born model is one of the world’s most popular fitness influencers. Lately, she’s been trying out something new: Baduanjin, a traditional Chinese fitness exercise, originally created over 800 years ago during the Song Dynasty. The name generally refers to how the eight individual movements characterize and give a silken quality to the movement of the body and its energy.
Baduanjin used to be popular mainly among older Chinese folks, but young people are now also getting into it. No equipment is necessary and it requires very little space or, perhaps most importantly in our fast-paced lives, time. In fact, it’s perfect for office workers, as they often suffer from lower back pain caused by hours sitting in front of the computer.
The video of Pamela doing Baduanjin has become a hit on Chinese social media, receiving millions of views. In addition to 9.68 million followers on YouTube, Pamela has established a presence on Chinese social media, including Bilibili, with more than 11.6 million followers. Showing her perfect figure year-round, Pamela has become an inspiration for many people worldwide, offering pathways to fat-burning, increased energy, and improved sleep quality.
Apparently, no one can resist the charm of Baduanjin. “I have been doing Baduanjin for about one month, which makes me sleep well and get stronger. I owe big thanks to Baduanjin since it gives me a much healthier lifestyle,” a young netizen commented below the video.
But not all people are suitable for practicing Baduanjin. Liu Xiaodan, an associate professor at Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, cautioned that people should always put safety first when doing Baduanjin, and patients who are extremely weak and fall easily should not take up this exercise.
4. What can we learn about Baduanjin from the text
A. It is 8 movements practised with a silk band.
B. It is created by Pamela for young people.
C. It helps office workers slow down their pace.
D. It helps people sleep better and get into shape.
5. How did the author show the benefits of practising Baduanjin
A. By using specific data. B. By explaining its definition.
C. By quoting online comment. D. By making comparisons.
6. Which of the following can best describe Pamela’s practising Baduanjin
A. Risky but rewarding. B. Thrilling but regretful.
C. Unexpected and strange. D. Eye-catching and inspiring.
7. What should be considered if one wants to take up Baduanjin
A. Physical condition. B. Social trend.
C. Pace of life. D. Work pattern.

Last April over 21,000 fans were at Wembley Arena in London, shouting and cheering. Thousands more were watching online. But this wasn’t a football, basketball or tennis match. It was esports, or competitive computer gaming. The prize money for the winners: 3 million.
Millions of people in the UK play esports for fun. Some of them have made it their full-time job. It’s not easy being a professional gamer, though. They sit in front of a computer for anywhere from 10-15 hours straight, doing the same thing over and over again, trying to improve on that craft like typing fast. In order to stay fit enough to compete, teams often maintain a consistent gym routine.
As well as playing esports, many people in the UK like watching them too. Esports can be exciting to watch: just like traditional sports, there are close games, last-minute victories and amazing performances. Sometimes online viewers can interact with games.
Despite the word “esports” having “sports” right in the name, there’s still a frequently asked question: are esports really sports Some say no. While they have a lot of similarities to traditional sports like football, soccer, and basketball, it’s appearing to miss one thing: movement. Physical activity. Esports players don’t need to run, jump, throw or do big physical action. At the moment, the UK government regards esports as kinds of games, not as sports.
But others say yes: esports are sports. Players do need some physical skills, especially hand-eye cooperation, reflexes, accuracy and timing. If darts (飞镖), snooker and shooting are seen as sports, then perhaps esports should be too. In fact, China and South Korea do see esports as sports. And esport is already an official medal sports in the Asian Games since 2022.
For many esports fans and players, though, the most important thing is that esports are growing in popularity and importance. If esports are not as important as sports now, they definitely will be in the near future.

B. Esports fans just watch games quietly online.

A. They win big prizes quite easily. B. They need no physical actions or skills.
C. They have to go through severe training. D. They pay little attention to physical conditions.
10. What is the author’s attitude to the future of esports
A. Negative. B. Unclear. C. Cautious. D. Optimistic.
11. which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. Next step: the Olympics! B. Esports: Games or Sports
C. The Sports Without Movement. D. What Makes A Professional Gamer
D
When Jennifer first heard that her friend George passed an exam, her heart sank. She’d failed the same test weeks earlier. But then, instead of feeling upset and envious, she congratulated him. Jennifer was surprised when she could share her friend’s happiness, she experienced her own, in turn.
Finding pleasure in another person’s good fortune is what social scientists call freudenfreude, a term which describes the happiness we feel when someone else succeeds, even if it doesn’t directly involve us.
Freudenfreude is like social glue, making relationships closer and more enjoyable. A study in 2021 found that in daily life freudenfreude boosted kind acts, such as helping others. Sharing in someone else’s joy can also improve life satisfaction and help people cooperate during a conflict.
While the benefits of freudenfreude are plentiful, it doesn’t always come easily. In some cases, it might really hurt you when you see another person’s winning as your loss, making freudenfreude feel out of reach. If you were raised in a family that paired winning with self-worth, you might misread someone else’s victory as your own weak point. Factors such as mental health and overall well-being can also affect your ability to share someone else’s joy.
To better understand freudenfreude, it can be helpful to illustrate its better-known counterpart, schadenfreude: the pleasure we feel when witnessing someone’s misfortune. In a 2022 study, experts examined instances of freudenfreude and schadenfreude among college students, some of whom were experiencing mild depression. Freudenfreude scores were higher, and schadenfreude scores were lower among those who were not depressed. The mildly depressed students, however, had a harder time developing a joy-sharing mindset. When you’re feeling down, it’s natural to view positive news with negativity.
However, no one gets to the top alone, and when we raise others up, we’re often carried up with them. When we feel happy for others, their joy becomes our joy. Celebrating our friends’ successes — big and small — helps us all win.
12. Why is the story of Jennifer mentioned in paragraph 1
A. To introduce a topic. B. To report an issue.
C. To present a definition. D. To provide a background.
13. What can we learn from paragraph 3 to 4 of the text
A. Freudenfreude comes naturally as an inborn ability.
B. People experiencing freudenfreude are more likely to help others.
C. Freudenfreude is accessible if we view others’ success as our loss.
D. People whose family highlights winning tend to enjoy freudenfreude.
14. What is the purpose of the 2022 study in paragraph 5
A. To figure out the benefits of freudenfreude.
B. To compare freudenfreude with schadenfreude.
C. To explore the cause of college students’ depression.
D. To reveal the effect of mental health on freudenfreude.
15. What does the author intend to tell us in the text
A. Others’ victories may result in our envy.
B. Celebrating others’ victories can bring a win-win.
C. Delight in others’ misfortune boosts our happiness.
D. Freudenfreude is closely linked to our physical health.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语练写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Every morning before going to school, Galen would stand in front of their bookshelf in the living room, focusing his sights on one book titled “The Greatest Explorer That Never Was”. It was kept on the top shelf. His mom would always read it to him when he was feeling sad. And lately, he’d always been feeling sad. His mom died.
He would try to think of a way to get the book. He’d thought about asking his dad for help but his dad had been spending more time in his office. Galen was on his own for this one and he saw it as a challenge he needed to overcome. This was his test.
At school, he would draw up plans on how he would do it. First, he planned on using the ladder they kept in the shed (小屋). So when he got home, he threw his bag on the couch and carried out the plan. But when he had his hands on and tried to carry it, immediately he realized that the plan was a failure-the ladder was too heavy for him to carry to the living room. He left the shed, defeated. He took out the notebook that he’d written his plans on. He crossed out using a ladder. He went to bed that night determined to come up with a new plan that would work.
His next plan was to use his mom’s old trampoline (蹦床). Using it would allow him to jump high enough, reach the top of the shelf, grab the book, and land on the ground. He did this about four or five times before deciding that this plan, like the one before, wouldn’t work.
Galen started coming with other plans as the days went on. After the unsuccessful mop and broom plan, he stayed up late that night hatching a new plan, which had a higher success rate than the others. It was to climb to the top of the shelf until he could just take the book. He’d just have to hold on to the sides a little tighter so that he wouldn’t fall off.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

A. They win big prizes quite easily. B. They need no physical actions or skills.
C. They have to go through severe training. D. They pay little attention to physical conditions.
10. What is the author’s attitude to the future of esports
A. Negative. B. Unclear. C. Cautious. D. Optimistic.

【答案】12. A 13. B 14. D 15. B

Advertisements are designed to persuade us, but which techniques are effective in talking us in to buy things
____16____ Normalization can lead to higher sales of junk food as people start to see these habits as normal. This is like product placement—where products are shown or mentioned in TV shows and films. Beth, an assistant professor of marketing and advertisement, tells us that product placement is most effective when it is not too obvious. ____17____ It seems that a subtle (不易察觉的) approach can be more persuasive.
Appealing to our emotions is another strategy advertisers use. ____18____ Jannet, a senior lecturer in communication studies, explains that for fear to be an effective tool, we need to believe: when fears are raised, people tend to take action to make a difference, like buying something. But when fears are exaggerated (夸大) or we feel helpless, we are likely to switch off.
Advertisements often show perfect-looking people because marketers believe that we will desire to be like them and buy the products they support. ____19____ The research that she mentions shows these ads can make people feel bad and put them off products.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
But it wasn’t the easy climb he expected.

Down to the ground with the book, he turned around to see who the ally (同盟)was.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】But it wasn’t the easy climb he expected. In fact, it was even harder than he thought. It was hard holding on to the edges with his hands and the tip of his toes. Both his hands and toes began to hurt. Before he could let go, someone grabbed him and raised him up. He felt his body moving upwards. He opened his eyes and was now face to face with the book he so desperately wanted. He grabbed the book and held on to it tight. He was then slowly brought back down to the ground.
Down to the ground with the book, he turned around to see who the ally (同盟)was. He was surprised to see that it was his dad. His dad smiled at him but his eyes looked sad. He walked closer to his dad and handed the book over to him. He took the book, gave Galen a smile, and began reading it out loud. As his dad was reading the story, Galen had this feeling that his mom was there, listening to the story with them.
