A space science lecture will be held in our school. Put your hands up if you know something about space exploration.
Free Talk
Activity 1: free talk
Purpose:to Light up students’ enthusiasm for learning
Step 2 Prediction
look at the headlines and pictures before reading, and discuss the following two questions.
1. What do you think are the main reasons for space exploration 2. If you are the author, what will you write in each paragraph
Activity 2: pairwork&discussion
Purpose: 1.to activate existing cognition
2.to arouse students’ reading expectation
Step 3 Complete the passage
Read the text. Several sentences have been removed from it. Choose the correct sentence to fill each gap.
Purpose:Guide students to roughly judge the context of sentences in the article by observing sentences, and complete the full text by means of cohesion and coherence.
Step 4 Summarize the main idea
Use your own words to summarise the main idea for each paragraph.

Purpose: Guide students to extract and summarize the general idea of the paragraph through topic sentences and repeated meanings to learn how to summarize the main idea.
Step 5 Reading for details
Purpose: 1. to help students understand the course of human exploration of the universe through intensive reading;
2. to help students build up national pride and self-confidence by combing China’s achievements.
By reading paragraph 2 and 4 carefully, sort out the achievements made in space exploration at home and abroad.
Ask students to talk about the following two questions.
1. Who might be the potential readers of the passage Scientists or ordinary readers 2. What is the type of the text Summarize the characteristics of a popular science article according to the notes on the blackboard.
Step 6 Reading for writing styles
Purpose: to help students understand the writing characteristics of popular science articles through a series of questions.
Step 7 Post-reading: Discuss and share
1. Why does the author use the title “space:The Final Frontier” 2. Do you agree that space is the final frontier for human beings to explore Why
Ask the students to discuss the following two questions in groups. Then choose a student to share the duscussion results.
Purpose:1. to help students to form their own views on space exploration.
2. to think deeply about the spirit of human exploration.
Step 8 Summary & homework
Summary: After know the history of human exploration of space, students are expected to develop spirit of loving science and being brave in exploration and enhance their patriotic feelings and national pride. End the class with President Xi’s words: Build human community with a shared future.
Homework: Write a short passage about:
1. The development of space exploration.
2. Reasons for space exploration.
Purpose: 1. to summarize this lesson
2. to deepen the significance of the theme and strengthen the infiltration of moral education
