参考范文
Dear Ryan,
I'm Li Hua from Class 3. I'm sorry to hear that you didn't perform well in the basketball match. It's understandable to be depressed about the result. However, if you can adopt different perspectives, the loss may be a blessing.
First, it's normal to lose in a basketball match. If you've tried your best, why not lift your spirits to face the result Anyway, the essence of competition lies not in victory but participation. Besides, you can also benefit from your loss by figuring out your strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, if your dream endeavors to overcome the disadvantage, you will win sooner or later.
I hope you can find my encouragement helpful. Best wishes.深圳外国语学校高中园 2023—2024学年度

When you think of wildlife holidays in the UK, Scotland is probably the first destination that
springs to mind, with quite a few breathtaking natural sites that offer a wonderful base to watch
wildlife.
The Trossachs National Park
It was the first national park established in Scotland. The Loch Lomond at the center of the
park is the largest body of freshwater in the UK. The largest land mammal (哺乳动物) in Britain,
red deer can be found in the park. Keep an eye out as you pass through forests, woodlands and open
hills.
The Isle of Staffa
The Isle of Staffa is famous for its dramatic rock formations, and for the cave known as
“Fingal’s Cave”, Staffa provided inspiration to Felix Mendelssohn, the German musician. He visited
in 1829 and, afterwards, composed his Hebrides Overture. The island is also famous for its adorable
seabirds—puffins, which are known for their vibrant beaks (鸟喙) and big personalities.
The Cairngorms National Park
The Cairngorms National Park is in northeast Scotland. With an area of 1,748 square miles, the
park covers the Cairngorms range of mountains and surrounding hills, and is the largest national
park in the UK as the second national park in Scotland. Over 25% of the UK’s endangered species

On the first day of school our professor introduced a new classmate — a wrinkled little old
lady — to us. Her name was Rose, and she was eighty-seven years old.
After class Rose and I walked to the Student Union Building and shared a chocolate milk-
shake. She told me she always dreamed of having a college education and now she was getting one.
We became instant friends. Every day for the following months, we would leave class together and
talk nonstop. I was always attracted, listening to this “time machine” as she shared her wisdom and
experience with me.
Rose became famous and easily made friends wherever she went. She tended to be highly
motivated, responsible, and deeply involved in class participation. In spare time she had someone
hang out or go to bars with. She even participated in some form of athletic activity. She said that
extra-curricular activities can form a vital part of her experience, creating unique chances for
friendship and learning.
At the end of the term we invited Rose to speak at our football meal. A little embarrassed, she
leaned into the microphone and simply said. “I’m sorry I’m so nervous.” As we laughed, she cleared
her throat and began, “We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop
playing. There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you’re nineteen years
old and lie in bed for one full year, you will turn twenty. If I’m eighty-seven years old and stay in
bed for a year, I will turn eighty-eight. Anybody can grow older. It’s non-optional but that doesn’t
take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding the chance in change. In this way
the elderly don’t have regrets for what they did, but rather for things they did not do.” Rose
concluded her speech by courageously singing “The Rose”. She challenged us to study the words
of the song and lived them out in daily lives.
At the year’s end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago. One week
after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her
funeral in honor of the wonderful woman who taught by example that it’s never too late to be all
you can possibly be.
44. Why does the author compare Rose to “time machine” in Paragraph 2
A. To stress her old age and knowledge of life.
B. To describe the close friendship between them.
C. To show that she always enjoyed her active life.
D. To explain why she took on a challenge in college.
45. Rose was invited to speak at the football meal most probably because ______.
A. she was a great football fan
B. she was the smartest student
C. she tried hard to achieve her dream
D. she became more educated than the others
46. We can learn that Rose agreed with the idea that ______.

London -- Life for Cathy Hagner and her three children is set to permanent fast-forward. Their
full school day and her job as a lawyer’s assistant are busy enough, but Hagner also has to take the
two boys to soccer or hockey or basketball while dropping off her daughter at piano lessons or Girl
Scout Club. Often the exhausted family doesn’t get home until 7 pm. There is just time for a quick
supper before homework.
In today’s world, middle-class American and British parents treat their children as if they were
competitors racing for some finishing line. Parents take their children from activity to activity in
order to make their future bright. It seems that raising a genius has become a more important goal
than raising a happy and well-balanced child.
“Doctors across the country are reporting a growing number of children suffering from
stomachaches and headaches due to exhaustion and stress,” says child expert William Daherty of
the University of Minnesota. Teachers are dealing with exhausted kids in the classroom. It’s a very
serious problem.
Many children attend after-school clubs by necessity. But competitive pressures also create an
explosion of activities. They include sports, language, music and math classes for children as young
as four.
“There is a new parenting trend under way which says that you have to tap all your child’s
potential at a young age; otherwise you will let him down,” says Terry Apter, a Cambridge-based
child and adolescent psychiatrist(青少年精神病学家).
“It isn’t entirely new: there have always been pushy parents. But what was previously seen as
strange behavior is now well accepted.”
48. From the first paragraph of this passage we can find that __________.
A. Hagner wastes much time helping her children’s lessons
B. Hagner doesn’t spend much time on her full-time job
C. Hagner is interested in sports and music
D. Hagner busies herself by following a trend
49. American and British parents, as the writer described in this passage, __________.
第6页,共11页
A. treat their children as sports players
B. pay no attention to their children’s lessons
C. bring up their children in a simple way
D. give their children little time to develop freely
50. The writer’s opinion about after-school clubs is that __________.
A. activities in the country are too competitive
B. children should attend four clubs at a time
C. some activities result from competitive pressures
D. clubs should have more subjects for school children
51. It can be inferred from the text that the writer’s attitude is __________.
A. parents used to take their children to every club
B. parents used to be wise about how to raise children
C. parents have all benefited from children’s clubs
D. parents have come to know the standard of education
D
While many of us may have been away somewhere nice last summer, few would say that we’ve
“summered.” “Summer” is clearly a noun, more precisely, a verbed noun.
Way back in our childhood, we all learned the difference between a noun and a verb. With such
a tidy definition, it was easy to spot the difference. Not so in adulthood, where we are expected to
“foot” bills, “chair” committees, and “dialogue” with political opponents. Chances are you didn’t
feel uncomfortable about the sight of those verbed nouns.
“The verbing of nouns is as old as the English language,” says Patricia O’Conner, a former
editor at The New York Times Book Review. Experts estimate that 20 percent of all English verbs
were originally nouns. And the phenomenon seems to be snowballing. Since 1900, about 40 percent
of all new verbs have come from nouns.
Even though conversion (转化) is quite universal, plenty of grammarians object to the practice.
William Strunk Jr. and E.B. White, in The Elements of Style — the Bible for the use of American
English — have this to say: “Many nouns lately have been pressed into service as verbs. Not all are
bad, but all are suspect.” The Chicago Manual of Style takes a similar standpoint, advising writers
to use verbs with great care.
“Sometimes people object to a new verb because they resist what is unfamiliar to them,” says
O’Conner. That’s why we’re comfortable “hosting” a party, but we might feel upset by the thought
of “medaling” in sports. So are there any rules for verbing Benjamin Dreyer, copy chief at Random
House, doesn’t offer a rule, but suggests that people think twice about “verbifying” a noun if it’s
easily replaceable by an already existing popular verb. “Make sure it’s descriptive but not silly-
sounding”, he says.
In the end, however, style is subjective. Easy conversion of nouns to verbs has been part of
第7页,共11页
English grammar for centuries; it is one of the processes that make English “English.” Not every
coinage (新创的词语) passes into general use, but as for trying to end verbing altogether, forget it.
52. What can we learn about the verbing of nouns
A. It hasn’t recently been opposed by many grammarians.
B. It is more commonly accepted by children than adults.
C. It hasn’t been a rare phenomenon in the past century.
D. It is easily replaced by existing verbs in practice
53. What is most leading experts’ attitude towards the practice of the verbing of nouns
A. Careful.
B. Satisfied.
C. Disappointed.
D. Unconcerned.
54. What does the author think of ending the verbing of nouns
A. Predictable.
B. Practicable.
D. Impossible.
C. Approaching.
55. What is the best title for the text
A. Are 40 Percent of all new verbs from nouns?
B. Are Summering and Medaling Annoying
C. Are You Comfortable about a New Verb
D. Are There Any Rules for Verbing
