William Lindesay, a famous Great Wall expert and conservationist, and his wife Wu Qi have traveled the globe, providing their sons with a unique growing environment. Sun hats, backpacks and sneakers (运动鞋) —these are the day-to-day must-haves for the family.
Most of their trips seem far from relaxing-cultural study in the hot and dry desert, a 53-kilometer hiking tour of New Zealand, a one-day climb to three English mountaintops and a six-day train ride from Beijing to Moscow.
Many assume the family must be wealthy and can afford their global travel, but they are not. Lindesay says they just choose to spend money on travel and eschew pricey hotels and restaurants when possible. Lindesay mentions the trip to Moscow as an example. Instead of taking a taxi from the railway station to the hotel, they took the subway. “We crossed the city for saving money, communicated with local people, and saw they were people just like us. We arrived at our destination feeling comfortable.”
However, their journeys, which can last weeks or months, have sometimes been inconsistent with their children’s schooling. Wu remembers once Lindesay let their elder son ask for leave so that they could go to New York for a 45-day lecture tour. Therefore the son missed his final exam. Things like that bother the family all the time.
Lindesay attaches great importance to learning out of the classroom, saying that children might score well on school tests, but traveling outside, in distant lands with different languages, cultures and political structures, is the real test. “You can only get streetwise on the street. You can only get worldly-wise when seeing the world,” he says.
24. How can we describe the Lindesays’ trips
A. Pleasant. B. Dangerous. C. Conventional. D. Challenging.
25. What does the underlined word ”eschew” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Compare. B. Visit. C. Avoid. D. Evaluate.
26. What problem does the family meet according to paragraph 4
A. They suffer from a tight budget. B. They hold different educational ideas.
C. They are faced with language barriers. D. They have scheduling conflicts.
27. Which statement may Lindesay agree with according to the text
A. Toughness is the best assistant of will. B. Man who travels far knows more.
C. Actions speak louder than words. D. There is no royal road to learning.

China is recognized as a world leader in the development of artificial intelligence and facial recognition systems. A Chinese company says it has created a new facial recognition system that can identify people even if they are wearing masks. Engineers at the Beijing-based company say their system is the first to be created to effectively identify people wearing face masks.
The company told a news agency that a team of 20 people built the system in about a month. The system is based on existing technologies developed over the past 10 years. The process involved adding a collection of about 6 million unmasked faces and a much smaller collection of masked faces, the company said.
The company is now selling two main kinds of products that use the new technology. One performs “single channel” recognition, which is designed to be used at the entrances to buildings.
The other product is a “multi-channel!” recognition system that uses groups of surveillance (监视) cameras. It can identify individuals in a crowd of up to 30 people within a second.
“When people are wearing a mask that covers the mouth and the nose, the recognition rate can reach about 95%, which can ensure that most people can be identified,” said Huang, vice president of the company. He added that the system’s success rate for people not wearing a mask is about 99.5%.
However, the new system struggles to identify people wearing both a mask and sunglasses. “In this situation, all of the key facial information is lost. In such cases recognition is tough.” Huang said.
People were reacting differently to the new technology. While some citizens have been against using such tools, the majority have accepted the technology as an elective way to decrease crime and catch criminals.
28. What did the company do to build the system
A. They employed hundreds of people. B. They gathered many face images.
C. They used the latest technology. D. They spent about a decade building it.
29. According to the passage, which of the following can be true
A. It’s hard to recognize people with masks and sunglasses.
B. The recognition rate of masked faces is about 99.5%.
C. The new system has already been used by the police.
D. The single channel product is as powerful as the multi-channel.
30. According to the passage, which kinds of people may use the new system
A. Physicians. B. Policemen C. Clowns. D. Lawyers.
31. What is the main purpose of the text
A. To advertise two products of facial recognition.
B. To show conflicting attitudes toward the system.
C. To introduce a new facial recognition system.
D. To show the advantages of facial recognition.

A new study led by researchers at the University of California, Riverside, has found exposure to third-hand smoke (THS) causes skin diseases.
The study — the first to look at humans exposed to THS — involved 10 healthy non-smokers wearing clothing with either filtered (过滤的) air or THS chemicals. The investigation lasted three hours, during which participants would either walk or run for 15minutes per hour — this would make them sweat and increase the levels of THS potentially taken in through the skin. Blood samples were collected, which were measured to see whether THS may have caused cell or tissue damage.
“We found THS exposure caused damage to DNA, lipids (脂质), and proteins, and the damage remained even after the exposure stopped,” said Shane Sakamaki-Ching, a doctor of biology and the first author of the study. “Cigarette smokers show the same result.” The study showed exposure to THS increases signals related with skin diseases, which makes sense: the organ most likely to come into contact with THS is your skin, and so it receives the biggest exposure to the harmful chemicals. “However, what’s even more worrying is the tendency to lead to cancer,” added Sakamaki-Ching.
“If you buy a used car previously owned by a smoker, you are putting yourself at some health risk,” said Prue Talbot, a professor of cell biology at UC Riverside and the corresponding author of the study. “If you go to a restaurant that allows smoking, you are exposing your skin to THS. The same applies to staying in a hotel room that was previously occupied by a smoker.”
All that came from just three hours’ investigation. And if you think e-cigarette smokers are being forgotten, fear not: the team’s next project is to take a look at which remains are left by these less-deadly death sticks.
Sakamaki-Ching said, “Our findings can help physicians in checking patients exposed to THS and help develop policies improving indoor environments polluted by THS.”
32. Why were the participants in the study asked to take exercise
A. To keep themselves energetic. B. To have their skin absorb more THS.
C. To do away with THS by sweating. D. To speed up blood production.
33. Which of the following statements is true
A. The tendency to lead to cancer worries smokers.
B. Cigarette smokers suffer more from THS.
C. THS is likely to cause skin cancer.
D. The damage caused by THS remains until the exposure stops.
34. What message does Prue Talbot want to convey in paragraph 4
A. Public places should ban smoking entirely.
B. Sharing is a bad habit and should be abandoned.
C. Non-smokers must keep off smokers for health.
D. THS can be widely found in our daily life.
35. Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A. THS Can Cause Skin Diseases B. A Campaign to Be Proposed to, Ban THS
C. Ways to Prevent Skin Diseases Worsening D. New Study Reveals the Potential Harm of Smoking

My grandmother died when my mother, Laura, was only five years old, The year was 1945 and life was extremely hard. As the youngest child, Laura was surrounded by the love of her father, brothers and sisters. However, it could never take the place of that of a mother’s. Worse still, as money was tight at that time, her family could not even afford her a doll (玩偶) on Christmas.
Later, Laura got married and set up her own family. In my mother’s life, her father, her husband and then her three children and then her grandchildren were the main focus of her life. She felt that she could make up for her sad childhood through her devotion to her family, but deep in her mind there was a dream waiting to be realized.
One afternoon in December 1995, I was working in the bank as usual when I caught sight of the beautiful handmade dolls in one of my customers’ hand. She was taking orders for the coming Christmas. The dolls looked cute and adorable. Without hesitation, I decided to get one for my five-year-old daughter, Kelly. Suddenly, an idea occurred to me. I asked my customer if she could make a special doll for my mother--one with grey hair and glasses: a grandmother doll. Having learned the past life experience of my mother, the doll maker accepted my request gladly, though it seemed to be a challenging job to her. So besides the Christmas tree, I also placed my order for two dolls: one blonde (金发的) and one grey-haired.
Several days passed. I was expecting the arrival of the festival as well as the gifts when a friend visited and told me that his dad, who played Santa Claus (圣诞老人), would make a visit to our town on Christmas morning. Knowing that my parents would also come to my house, I called his dad and asked him to deliver the gift to my mother. To my joy, his dad kindly agreed.
Everything was in place and eagerly I expect what was designed to be a most memorable moment in my mother’s life.

School Labor Day
Aiming to exercise our bodies and further improve our awareness about labor, recently our school held the 10th “School Labor Day”. The process of the activity is as follows.
To start with, we were divided into groups to pick up the rubbish at the corners of the school, which was often ignored. After getting rid of the weeds in the school garden, we planted some flowers and trees. Besides, we cleaned the classrooms inside and out. Finally, we ended up singing a song of labor.
Tired though we were, we came to realize that the activity not only beautified our school, but also tempered our mind and cultivated our spirit of bearing hardships.

Paragraph 1
Christmas Day arrived and so did Santa Claus at the appointed time. His visit lit up the festival. Hardly had he entered our house when Kelly rushed out, looking excited. Wearing a smile, my mother watched Kelly welcoming this special guest and playing with her doll. As Santa turned to leave, he looked again into his bag and took out one more gift. When he asked who Laura was. my mother, feeling surprised, moved forward. With a guilty look, Santa handed her the prepared gift with a card.
Paragraph 2
Never will I forget my mother’s reaction when she got the present. While she was reading the words: “For Laura: I happened to find this package that should have been sent on Dee. 25, 1945. The gift inside had aged, but I felt that you might still wish to have it. Sorry for the delay,” tears of joy welled up in her eyes and ran down her cheeks. Surprised and deeply moved, she couldn’t speak but only held tightly in her arms the doll she had expected for fifty years. Undoubtedly it was that special doll that made Laura the happiest “child” that day.
