Everyone needs deep sleep, because our body fixes itself when we are in deep sleep. However, deep sleep doesn't happen right after we get into bed and close our eyes. It takes time and happens only a few times during sleep. From the picture, we can know the time when deep sleep usually happens.
(

)
In the picture, REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement(快速动眼睡眠期), and NREM stands for Non-Rapid Eye Movement(非快速动眼睡眠期). During REM sleep, our eyes move quickly from side to side, and that doesn't happen during NREM sleep.
NREM sleep comes after REM sleep, and it has three stages. In the first stage, others can easily wake us up because we are in light sleep. In the second stage, our heart rate(比率) is slow, and our

body is cool to get ready for deep sleep. The third stage is deep sleep. It's more difficult for others to wake us up in this stage because our body is busy fixing itself. But it doesn't last long.
We go back to the stage of REM sleep about 90 minutes after we start to sleep. This stage is part of light sleep, too. And dreams usually happen here. Then NREM sleep comes back. Although we can go back to NREM sleep again, we don't always get into the third stage. This is why a long sleep doesn't always make us feel good. The key lies in how much deep sleep we get. And how can we have as much deep sleep as we want Doctors haven't got the answer yet.

Many people have always believed that animals hunting for food always catch the ones that are young, old or sick. Till now there is no proof(证据) of this fact. But latest research by French scientists in Paris, France, has proved that it is true. A report on their research came out in The Economist magazine recently. How did they do it
The scientists studied the hunting habits of cats. And they studied the health of birds that were killed by cats and those killed in accidents. They made a careful study of one part of the birds ’ bodies which was a sign of its good health. That part was the spleen(脾).
The scientists chose the spleen because of a particular(特定的)reason. Healthy birds have larger sized spleens than those which keep getting ill. So from the size of the spleen the French scientists could find out if the birds killed by cats were healthy or sick.
They examined more than 500 birds from 18 different species(种类)and made very interesting discoveries. The spleens of birds killed by cats were much smaller than those killed in accidents. It means that they were not very healthy. This was true of 16 out of the 18 species they studied. In a word, the spleens of birds killed in accidents were three times larger than the spleens of birds killed

by cats.
Also most of the birds killed by the cats were young. Of those that died in accidents, half were young and half were adult. So while it is true that the young and the sick birds are at a greater danger of becoming a cat’s lunch or dinner, old birds are able to take care of themselves.
61. What has the latest research by French scientists proved
A. Many animals catch others for food.
B. We should stop hunting to protect animals.
C. When animals hunt, they catch the weak ones.
D. People are only allowed to hunt the young, old or sick animals.
62. Why did the scientist choose the spleen to do the research
A. Because it’s very useful for cats to catch birds.
B. Because it’s important to see if the birds are healthy or sick.
C. Because from its size, we can find out if the birds can fly.
D. Because it’s the most important part of a bird’s body.
63. Which of the following is TRUE about the research
A. All the 18 species they studied had the same result.
B. They caught the healthy birds to examine their spleens.
C. The spleens of birds killed in accidents were much smaller.
D. Scientists studied over 500 birds from 18 different species.
64. What kind of birds will be more likely to be caught by the cats
A. The adult B. The old C. The healthy D. The young
65. What does the writer mainly want to tell us
A.The result of a new research about hunting. B. A way to protect the birds.
C.The important part of birds ’ body. D. Aparticular idea about hunting.

Among all traditional Chinese operas, facial mask(脸谱) in Peking Opera is
popular around the world. Many foreigners are 81 (interest) in it. In Peking Operas, different colors are used to show different 82 /f :mz/ of roles, but at first, only three colors were used.
Red is generally chosen to show that 83 role is honest and loyal (忠诚 的). In fact, the color red is just to show 84 a person looks like. Many roles
use red and black to show they are very brave and honest, so red begins to produce another 85 / mi:n /. An example of "red full face" is Guan Yu, who is very loyal to Liu Bei.
The role 86 the white face is bad in human nature, so people always avoid using white to describe good people. This kind of roles includes Cao Cao in the time of the Three Kingdoms, and Qin Hui. Those people always have bad 87 (end).
The black mask shows either a rude and brave 88 /'h r / or a fair and selfless(无私的) person. Li Kui of Water Margin, and Bao Zheng are of this kind of people.
Red, white and black are the first three colors. Later, other colors are added to 89 (they). People can 90 (clear) tell the differences through these colors.

World Marine Equipment Conference was held from Oct. 12th to Oct. 15th, 2023 in Fuzhou. It was a great honor for me to take part in the event as a volunteer. Now let me share my experience with you.
I served the foreign guests tea and water. Besides, I showed them around the exhibitions and introduced the maritime history of Fuzhou. At the same time, I spread Fuzhou culture such as Jasmine tea culture, Min opera and oil-paper umbrellas. The foreign guests were quite interested in them.
Through the event, I have not only improved my English but also learned a lot about China’s maritime. To be a volunteer makes me happy and proud. What a wonderful experience!
