Cherry Hill East graduate Max McGee will start his first day as a sports anchor(主持人) on ESPN’s Sports Center on Jan.31. After three years of covering Baltimore and Maryland sports for WIZ-TV, McGee’s new position will involve carrying out live interviews with athletes, reviewing previous games and looking ahead to others.
A graduate of Cherry Hill East, McGee got his first broadcast experience on a sports show. It was an idea encouraged by the late East sofiball coach Charlie Musumeci. “I remember him coming up to me after school," McGee remembered. He said, "You’d probably be really good on camera. I know you talk about sports. Why don’t you give it a shot '" "He really started something," McGee added, "He saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself."
In 2008, McGee had a hard time. He was recovering from a setback(挫折) he xperienced when he attended Camden County College and played baseball. He dreamed of playing baseball as a career, but was cut by his team.
"My dream wasn’t over," McGee added. "It was just a different chapter because I realized I would be able to talk about sports for a living, instead of playing them. And that was great."
He graduated in 2012. Then he went on to study journalism at Temple University in Philadelphia, where he joined All Sports Update, a student-run program on Temple TV, and got broadcast experience through WHIP radio. Paro is one of the most popular companion robots. Paro is a robotic baby harp seal(鞍背海豹) with cute black eyes and a pacifier(安抚奶嘴) that functions as its charger. Created by Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Paro is more than a stuffed animal. The little seal is packed with five kinds of sensors: touch, light, audio, temperature and posture. Plus, Paro is super intelligent; it can learn to behave in a way that the user prefers. According to the Paro website, "If you stroke(抚摩) it every time you touch it, Paro will remember your previous action and try to repeat that action to be stroked."
While animal-assisted therapy(疗法) and the benefits of pets have been analysed in numerous scientific studies, real animals may not always be the appropriate choice for an older adult. Animals can be a lot of work; they can spread some diseases to humans and they may not always be on their best behaviour. That’s where robotic pets come into play. In a study on Paro’s effect on nursing home residents, researchers found that those who interacted with Paro were less lonely over the period of the trial.
Robot pets are becoming widely used in assisted living communities and, as years go by, these robopets will become more advanced at copying real animal behaviours. While some believe that robot pets can’t compete with real animals, the companionship they provide to older adults cannot be denied.

With governments across the world supporting native languages, it may seem like people in power are finally beginning to accept linguistic diversity (语言多样性). But there’s still a long way to go.
In Mexico, for example, speakers of native languages still face challenges that Spanish speakers may not. According to Mexico News Daily, speakers of native languages in the state of Chiapas are still influenced by Castilianization practices, which serve to change these communities to mainly Spanish-speaking ones. Although Mexico is home to many native languages, like Nahuatl and Mixtec, most of these languages have become endangered because of Spanish’s predominance(主导地位).
A recent survey done by researchers at Western Kentucky University tries to explore the public’s attitudes toward native language education in the country. Although the Mexican government’s efforts to protect native languages have been far from satisfactory, it appears that the Mexican public is generally quite supportive of efforts to revitalize(使恢复生机) native languages.
87% of respondents(调查对象) to the survey said they agreed with the statement that “the presence of native people is important to Mexican culture.” The researchers also asked respondents about their thoughts on teaching native languages and English in school. Most of the respondents agreed that it was important to teach these as subjects in school, though native languages received a bit less support than English (88.4% of respondents supported teaching English in school compared to 70.8% for native languages).
The researchers noted that the Mexican government has made some efforts in recent years to support native languages, such as the National Institute of Native Languages, which provides a variety of online courses to help people learn native languages. Now, Nahuatl is one of the few languages native to Mexico that is not endangered — most of the country's native languages have less than 100,000 native speakers.

One day a boy found a bird lying on the ground, squawking(叫喊) for help. Feeling sad for the bird, the boy petted it gently and wanted to help it, but he didn’t know how since he was just 7 years old.
